The Guy Q&A Thread: Post your questions here!

lol thanks i didnt even think of that

Alright so I just got down forcing myself to do some ranked matches on xboxlive. I ran into a few fellow guy players and I felt somewhat helpless to the point where nothing was working mixups wasnt working normals was getting stuffed left and right. Then to top it off I go from doing well for a duration of the match until out of nowhere I get hit with something random then my lead slips out of my hands faster than a 3frame move. Does it ever happen to you guys where you work so hard but for some odd reason you end up losing. Since AE has came out I find myself losing alot more and I wouldnt blame it on the twins, oni or evil ryu.

That stuff happened to me both in Super and AE. Sometimes it’s a matter of just stop playing for a while. Once, in ranked I lost some 1000 PP in a couple of hours, and after barely stabilizing, I stopped creating lobbies and started joining. The people I played against weren’t worse, but I started winning again. It’s weird and I can’t really explain it. I think it happens with every fighter, but SF4 series the most for me. It just happens.

Anyway. The real reason I’m posting in this thread is to ask a question about the AE changes (not sure if I should post here on the AE changes thread): I remember back in Super, L Bunshin Senpukyaku had lower body invincibility. Now I’ve been trying to use it, but it’s always getting stuffed in ways I feel it wouldn’t in the past. Has the invincibility changed on that move? How does it work now?

@ SupahRreem

Yeah that happen’s to all of us, you lose some, you win some. Keep in mind, Guy is a low tier charicter with Flashy moves. Most of Guy’s speicals are unsafe and because of that, all you have to do is meet the right person who know this match up and Guy’s weakness will truly show. There are people on my friend’s list who know how to play this match and will mostly focus on using normals, zoning and blocking. If I approach them with anything unsafe, they will get a free punish. If I do nothing they can and will likely lame out the match and wait for one of my many unsafe moves to punish.

I said all of that to say use more Pokes and Footsie’s in the match to keep your self from doing anything unsafe. Limit your self on jump-ins, Zone using Guy’s Pokes to set up Anti-airs and Wiff Punishes, land more Knockdowns to create 50/50 situations. Push your opponent in the corner and try your best to keep them their to earn extra damage! Your Mind Set has to be Focused on these things before going into any battle, so you can prepare your self for anything. This is generally what I remind myself to do and Focus on the Charicter I’m playing against and NOT the player. And if I lose, I take it as a stepping stone, not a stumbling block. That’s just the way I trained myself to think…

Thanks man I felt like today was my 2nd darkest day ever. Like I was losing to people I shouldn’t lose against. I got turtle’d out poked the whole 9 yards. I mean I basically feel like I just picked up the game. Your absolutely right I should use pokes more sometimes I get the knockdown by a grab or slide and try to create some kind of 50/50 mixup by baiting and other alternative solutions to apply some damage. but bam a dp or 3frame move deters me from my resolve of winning. Once I have the momentum I feel fine but when I get knockdown It goes downhill from there.

I can only block for so long until something opens me up and I get hit with counter hits for trying to work my way back into the match. Maybe I need to read match up guides and practice against staple moves that the characters have.
The thing that’s also killing me is my skill to adapt to different match situations and player skills. I feel like I can hold my own to a certain to degree against really good players but when I play against people who are less skilled I get hit with the dumbest setups/moves ever. It’s as if I’m not sure when to start my offense because I feel like someones mashed attack will beat mine even if I do bait. I know this long story of my problems isn’t really a question but I’m just looking for a bit of guidance here to up my game because I feel stuck and none of the other characters in ssf4 appeal to me. Also I would like to ask if anyone has the time to add me on xboxlive to chat/play a few matches with me to help me figure out whats going on my gamertag is hr paperstaxx(space after the hr) thanks for listening and I apologize for the long rant.

I’m having lots of trouble against sweep happy characters like chun and rog and I can’t find anything which I can use to punish their sweeps on block. Is there anything that works? Guy has the saddest list of startup frames I’ve ever seen.

Also why do the majority of guys opt to use c.lk s.mp run instead of c.lk s.mp > s.hp tc run?

I do the s. MP run because the hp would wiff from some distances. In AE I will try to use TC more!

Nope, you can’t punish their sweeps on block unless they attempt to sweep right next to you. If you really want to punish them, you’ll have to use your focus attack (and even then, Balrog can FADC backwards if he has the meter). I’m pretty sure most characters suffer this same problem of being unable to punish Chun and Rog’s sweeps on block.

If you played Guy in Super, you’ll know that the st.MP > st.HP target combo had the huge issue of whiffing on crouching opponents. So, in order to make sure we wouldn’t ever have to face this problem during a match, most Guy players compromised and trained themselves not to use target combo. In AE, the hitbox for the st.HP portion of the target combo is larger, but the target combo will still whiff outside of a certain range.

Yeah I’ve got to say, Target combo will hit more often than not now in both blockstrings and combos so start getting that in your head.It was the other way round in Super.

I also feel the TC into LP hozanto lands from further away! There were times last night were I was what looked to be out of range for TC LP Hozanto to hit but it would connect even with a nice gap. Was LP hozanto hit box buffed?

TC into lp hozanto can work better on some character with bigger hitboxes, like Abel - depends who you did it on really.

The TC is definitely better on crouching characters, but can still whiff on standing opponnents after jab jab confirmation. This happens mostly with Ryu for me, but I would imagine it happening with other characters who have even smaller hittable boxes.

True it seemed far away but it was on Thawk. Thanks

do you only have a 1 frame window to make guys cr.lp to st.mp blockstring safe from 3 frame reversals ? .

And what are the frames for block/hit on bushin flip elbow drop …

I’m not entirely sure about the frame data, but if you do only 1 cr.lp to st.mp then it’s very hard for them to block and do the dp motion instantly. You can try it in training, it’s way too fast.

If you do cr.lp x 2 however, then they can just mash dp and it’s much easier to get hit. But at high level, unless out of desperation, it’s unlikely they would DP without meter. As always, how you play and the strings you use should depend on your opponnent.

Sometimes online, you really gotta dumb the match down and just wait for them to mash out a dp after they block a few jabs, and of course punish.

ah thanks for that man appreciate it , it’s because i picked up guy recently and dudes have just been mashing through strings that i used to think were safe so it’s good to know that it’s better to do just one cr.lp .

any idea on the frames block/hit on bushin flip elbow drop ?

edit : so i checked guys frame data for AE and cr.jab is + 3 on block and st.mp has 5 frame startup , so that means theres a two frame window to input a safe st.mp or still just 1 frame? .

2 frames. Only if u fail your combo or delay your combo from cr.lp to st.mp by 1 frame, u will get hit by a 3 fr reversal.

i meant on block , not if the cr.jab hits .

Sorry for misunderstanding your question, let me rephrase it.
1 frame hahahaha.

haha no worries man , thanks for anwsering …kiryu literally always go for st.mp after cr.jab , either his blockstrings are tight or he is just ballsy lol .

@ Polybius

An advanced way to punish Rog and Chun’s Sweep on block is to combo stMp into Run Slide or Ex Hozanto. If you don’t want to take the risk into a combo, then just mash stMp as a Poke Attack quickly after you blocked the sweep. If your close enough, against Chun Li you can quickly mash Guy’s Ex Tatsu after you blocked her sweep to counter. Also remember you can always whiff punish with Ex Hozanto if you train yourself to react to a whiffed sweep. Note: Guy can punish at least 95% Sweeps on block in AE with those same punish’s stated above against the whole cast.

(Medium Hozanto)

Is it me or is Medium Hozanto safer in AE? I’ve been only able to punish it against Chun Li’s Super (2 frame reversal). If it is safer then it could be a good tool to earn a little more Chip Damage. Does 32 Chip Damage on Block. Maybe it’s the push block? Even Ryu’s Ex Dragon Punch can’t punish it.
