IIRC, Sex between men was seen as the purest form of bond since men were considered superior than women, so naturally the sexual bond between men was an ideal form of love.
The thing is that for how much is memed, it wasnt really the norm outside some specific greek towns, and certain specific roman time periods (mostly during their decay)

But To which extent, is not really known.
