Epic offers a minimum sales guarantee, paid in advance, in exchange for a timed exclusive. Basically, it is a cash advance combined with insurance. If the game’s sales exceed this minimum guarantee, then Epic effectively gets the exclusive for free. Epic really only “pays” for the exclusive if the game fails to achieve the promised sales.
Publishers and some devs like the deal because it gives them money now instead of having to wait 6+ months for the first revenue, and because they are guaranteed a minimum amount of money even if the game tanks.
As for the per copy basis, there are a couple of things to account for. If you use Unreal Engine, then you pay 5% per copy to Epic for the engine license fee. For each copy sold through the Epic store, Epic takes a flat 12% cut and waves the UE license fee. For each copy sold through Steam, Valve takes a 30% cut (reduced to 25% after the first $10mil, then 20% after the first $50mil) and you still need to pay any engine license fees.
So SNK would get 88% of each copy of Samurai Shodown sold through Epic, but only gets 65% of each copy sold through Steam (Valve gets 30% and Epic gets 5% for the UE license).

Truth be told, nothing is easy about Melee.
But Shiek and Marth are known as some of the most simple, straight forward characters of the playable cast and they’re top tier.
I think that the game is just too SF for Leffen’s tastes. I’ve always said that Smash players adapt better to games like Tekken (because of the movement) and Mahvel/Anime (freedom and fast pace).

The only “scummy” thing is that they are paying game devs to make them exclusives rather than developing themselves or by 2nd party studios.
But even then, is nothing more beyond a little annoyance of having to install another fucking launcher and make an account on a different storefront to get the game.

The majority of people dont want the hassle of having to go and build a pc, keep up with hardware changes to keep them updated, etc, etc.
Consoles offer them the chance to just having to buy the hardware once for a couple of years and know that they will be able to play the game right of the bat in the comfor of their living room/ bedroom
