I found an easy way to grind by logging into my PS4 via Remote Play and playing the towers with my AI controlled character. I just had to press X after every match, which I could do as I worked from home or watched shows or whatever.
The game has/had potential but there a couple of things I couldn’t get past gameplay wise:
(1) the variation system sucks. It was cool in MKX because you could tell they designed each variation from the ground up. Here, because they have the custom system for casuals, they just kinda slapped moves together that they thought would balance out.
They really should have allowed custom variations for tournament mode. You could have easily picked your moves at the character select screen via a drop-down menu and showed your opponent’s abilities at the loading screen.
That was the biggest thing that held me back. I couldn’t find one instance with a character I liked where their tournament variation would be what I would’ve chosen, if given the chance. Now, yes, you couldn’t do that in X, but again, the variations were more solid in X. In X it was easy to find characters and variations I liked. I could never settle on one in 11. Not even close. Every character/variation I somewhat liked, felt incomplete to me, as there was usually one move that felt like wasted space (Shao Kahn’s slow ass buffs, etc).
(2) the combos are a step-down from MKX. MKX was jank, the roster was a bit underwhelming for me, it was too dark, yadda yadda yadda, but the combo system was ridiculously open and fun. Labbing combos was just as fun as in MVCI or some open tag game. Yeah, there were optimal routes, but in every combo, you could substitute a small amount of damage for a more consistent combo at various locations. Really making easy to make combos for you.
I really didn’t find it the same in 11. I’m not saying the combos are all strict - there definitely is some variations you can do, but it’s nowhere near the same, and that was the best part of X to me.
All in all, I actually do think X is a better game, for me anyway, but it still has issues that were hard for me to get over though. NRS can’t seem to do it right, lol. I wish I was playing videogames when MK9 was out. I suspect I would’ve liked it a lot.
