I think it’s pretty indicative of how sad and out-of-ideas Hollywood is when it starts making even more sequels to films that were released thirty years ago – with the original actors, even!
And as for adding children of the original children to a new film – that rarely works out well, guys.
Anybody really enjoy the last Indiana Jones film with the addition of Indy, Junior?
Yeah, Shia Labeouf REALLY made that picture, good! It was near the start of a bad cycle of rehashing classic film/TV series with BAD sequels or remakes and the beginning of the end of Labeouf as a bankable actor – the guy can’t shut up to this day when he really SHOULD close his Twitter account, period! (He badmouthed the Indy film he did, too, and I’m sure Spielberg and Lucas LOVED him for that even though most Indy fans felt the film was putrid…)
At least when the Star Trek films started in 1979 it had only been 10 years since the last episode of the original live-action series. At least the average of those guys was ONLY 50 at that point! The movie series with the original actors, much as I liked them, ended mercifully before they got too old and before any of the major players had died!
It’s a very good thing to let some things go and remain fond memories instead of continuing them to death… it’s sad when we have bad reimaginings of classic TV shows and movies with recast characters (the last two Trek movies by JJ Abrams, the Honeymooners movie starring Cedric the Entertainer) but when you continue with original actors who are well past their prime that’s even sadder!
The Star Wars prequels were bad enough for me growing up as I did on the original, unedited Star Wars movies and having seen THOSE original far superior (NO Jar-Jar just annoying teddy bears in Return of the Jedi) films in first-run theatrical release. I can’t imagine how cringe-worthy, CGI-enhanced or not, it’s going to be to see Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison-older-than-my-Dad(!) Ford try to play Luke, Leia, and Han again. Ford’s eligible for social security already… Hamill and Fisher are just a few years away from that! Oy!
