The first tournament. Are you/do you know one of the people too b**** to enter?

This should be a more widespread idea!

I loved the casual play tables at SVB… to level up.

Why not leagues?

Lets say you got 30 people and 6 machines.

You split into 6 groups of 5, play round robin, top 2 in each group advance.

12 person tourney after that. Or maybe do it as a series of round-robins with points and stuff, and have a winner at the end.

Another thing, many of the SF gen is growing up now, so it’s tougher to commit a full day to tournies and things along that line. Also, you don’t need to head to an arcade to get your fill of comp- online play fills that need for 99% off players, even if it isn’t perfect- and some of those people play in tournies, and play WELL in tournies, so it’s not all “casual scrubs”

Tbh I don’t see any reason to be scarred lol : Its all for fun, you loose ok fine you loose. So what? Next time get back better, train, get back.

I live in holland, where there are NO tournaments lmao (Probably just a few sf4 players) I WISH I lived close to an arcade, or a spot where there are tournaments. I would enter monthly for sure, to get my name a bit known.

Why would people be scarred of a tournament =P

Although I guess to be really good, you need some time on your hands indeed. But not every small tournament is packed with A-game players =D

I do slightly agree with lone wolf, that you prob can’t show your fullest that fast in a 2/3 match. Since that could easily end in like, a few min. You have to adapt pretty fast I guess. Cause at least for me, I start hanging on to patterns and other stuff after playing for at least 10-20 minutes.

BUt thats with every tournament relating thing

I remember my first tournament. It was Sinsation, god that was fun.

I remember first walking in and watching people play 3s. By then I wanted to just walk out of the fucking place. I stayed though, which is one of the better things I could have done. I had a great time, made very good friends and saw amazing matches. The most important thing is that I learned though, and boy did I. Seeing people like Justin Wong, Combofiend, Gootecks and just all the amazing player really helped my game go sky high.

Tell him if he goes to a tournament he will learn so much and just have such a great time. Winning or losing.

what is a round robin exactly I’ve never been to a tourney, but i’d love to go to the one in October in my area. i’m not afraid of losing or anything its to be expected at your first tourney. has anyone finished top 8 at their first tournament?

I scurred.

I’ve never been to one but I just got back into fighting games in general after playing 3S causally along time ago. It’s definitely not the fact that I’m scared, I expect to lose, often, my first couple of trips out but it’s more of the fact that my schedule with work/school prevents me from joining up. I’m also lazy and haven’t checked out the local scene for tourneys or get-togethers but I plan on doing so in the future when I’m more confident my abilities :nunchuck:

I need a fucking car.

I used to go to tournaments knowing I wasn’t going to win money but I’d gladly give 10 bucks up if it means I get to play some high lvl people to help kick my ass to learning the game. Now I play to win and try my hardest to win. People who are “scurred” will never get to a higher lvl in this game nor will they have the attitude to achieve anything in the real world.

I think I’m worse than scared. I won’t even play online because I’m worried about losing and making myself look like a prat. This is probably because I’m just really new to fighters…

I mean, I know that it’s G3, so as long as my execution is okay and I have a good game plan with my main (Ryu) I probably shouldn’t have a problem, but every time I go to play online I just pause and back out the menu again. It’s really weird.

Round Robin is when each player plays against every other player. In the end, whoever has the best win-loss record is declared the winner.

Yea I finished top 8 in my 1st tourny - of course there were only like 12 ppl in it haha.

I’ve been trying to get some people to enter the tourny scene, but a lot of them have this response “I’m not gonna pay $5-$10 to lose.” I think maybe if some one was kind enough to host free entry tournaments, we’d see more random heads show up. But yeah, a lot of ppl are scared.

Oh and in response to the guy with time committment issues - you don’t have to go in hardcore like that - I’ve been in and around the scene since forever, but hardly anyone knows me, cuz I keep my personal life separate from street fighter for the most part lol. I’ve been to EVO twice, but coupled that with a trip to Vegas with friends/gf, and when I go to local tournys, I usually bounce soon after I win or lose - not because I don’t like hanging out with the scene, but I got things to do lol.

I’m scurred of joysticks

my wife would castrate me if I spent 200 bucks on a joystick so I’m scurred of her

hence I’m scurred of arcade tourneys

not that they have any arcade machines in my area

I just confused myself

I don’t go because the closest arcade is Chinatown Fair where Justin, Sanford, and a ton of other pro’s play. Now I don’t mind loosing but I can’t even provide a challenge to guys like that. I’m not good enough to even put up a fight and learn from getting beat. I think once I’m “good” I will be able to somewhat play them, get killed but be close enough in skill where I can actually learn. Also I’m a bit old, 28, and feel creepy hangin’ out with 18 year old dudes.

I can understand that it does feel kinda strange to be like the oldest dude in the room. I would play at tourney but I have to spend time with the misus and she will trip. Who knows I might try and show up and do a tourney but my skills are baaaaaaaaaaaaad. I need to do more casuals with good players before I make that jump.

I’m scurred. Is there a 12 step program I can follow?

Lol @ people talking about how money is at stake, and everything. Unless you are some hobo doing this as a job, that shouldn’t affect you.

This is pretty off-topic, but I think that’s what’s wrong with tournaments also. It’s too much about the money at times, and not really about the game. Also, I’ve never entered a tourney in my life, but I wouldn’t say it’s dumb just because you play for a few minutes. In fact that should be your motivation to get better. So that you don’t just show up, and lose in 10 minutes and return home after having to wait hours just to play.

That’s why I prefer ranbats with the point system or whatever. Cuz it’s more about recognition, and shit.

Haha, that happens to me on GGPO only if someone really fucking good challenges me. Like even If I do well versus them, I notice we have even health or something, and then I choke sometimes at crucial moments. This once caused me to have a lead where I almost perfected someone to just dying that round X_X

What helps is that you just don’t give a shit. Once you don’t care I think everything falls into place.

I still think double elimination is a weird choice.

When I played chess as a kid, tournaments were usually round robin.

When I played TCGs and Minis games, it was always Swiss.

Now in fighting games double elimination.

All that’s left is single elim, and that sucks balls.

To me that seems like even more reason to go, I wish I was close to CTF. Also, when did 28 become “old” ? lol How old are the pros, like Justin Wong, Arturo? Serious question because they seem like they’re in the mid to late 20’s too.

These small tourneys…maybe.
But the majors? I doubt it.

Evo for example…
Alot of people I met at Evo showed up to meet far away colleagues, test their might against the greats, and learn. The prize money wasn’t really talked about.

Hell…just to brag they were present at Evo.

I guess I have might have been mislead by that thread about paying top 8 instead of top 3. Many seemed to be concerned about this. I guess you’re right about EVO specifically. Since just being there feels like a privilige I guess.
