Not to be “that guy” but if someone were to turn in a computer to a business and it fell out of the holding period to be considered the property of that business, then whatever info is on it is at the disposal of that business. Most businesses will just delete the info though, because it’s a REALLY bad look to say “Hey, I’ll leak your info if you let me own it.”

That is indeed true if the computer in question was still his (Hunter’s) property at the time of said snooping. That’s going to be VERY important, and I really think they already know the answer.
