because its the potential to get it. a title of world champ means shit…but if you got cash…that actually means something. you can actually do something with cash. and lol kinda money is some life changing shit.

So for those of you in the know, is the money in the fgc even at pro sports level? like you actually live off it (35-45k a year)?
It’s not even close to that pro-level shit. Why do you think so many of them have roommates? If you win (and I mean a big if) you can get a couple grand but it’s nothing really great. I make about the same money at a regular job that the top TOP players. Actually, I probably make more. But you have to be consistent as fuck in the FGC. I think the only one who makes (made) pretty solid cash was Chris G but he did a lot of traveling and had to come in first place a shit ton, too. I’m not sure if he still plays anymore but when I was paying attention he probably pulled in something decent. I doubt he even paid taxes on those winnings lol so he came out better than I did.
But all top players collude to split tournament money. Most would rather have the guaranteed cash than take a gamble and end up with less money. Collusion exists pretty hard in the top spots, it’s been brought up by a few top players. It’s just how it works. Not to say they don’t play their hardest, but it’s there.
If I were to quit working and try to get into video game money, it would NEVER be fighting games. There’s very little money in it. It’d be in Blizzard games or that LoL game. Millions of dollars for pushing keys on a keyboard? YES. That’s worth wasting your life on!

I wouldn’t say that. I know Watts a little through stories JaHa tells me and he sounds passionate for keeping the scene alive. He wants what he grew up with: top players trying their best to stay top players while enjoying the company of other competitors. That’s fine, IMO. I don’t think the fighting scene will grow to the level of LoL because if it were going to it would have happened already. SFIV was its best chance and while it did blow the scene up it’s nowhere even close to the numbers necessary for LoL money or sponsorship.
I respect Watts for what he wants to accomplish, however I do think he’s holding on to a lost time. We’re all older and realizing we just can’t play games every day.
Oh i understand his grief of keeping a subculture alive and whatnot, but I figured from his blog and the talk of “incorporation” there was a substantial amount of money involved. Some friends and I have toyed around with starting an arcade/gaming store a few times but there just isnt enough money to justify it, at least in our area and keeping it to fighters. Now dat CoD money, thats another story…
Yeah would a big weekly tourney like this bring more business to the arcade itself? Can’t be good unless their replacement tournament has good amount of views and stuff. Pretty petty though IMO.

Apparently, Super Arcade is gonna have a similar weekly event on their own stream.
I always thought it was sad the way that American arcades have been dying off. They’re still pretty strong in Japan from what I hear, but I want that sort of thing in the US.
Watson also said he has sponsors involved for their events…
LoL/Dota 2 money will never be in the FGC.
The games are not accessible enough, and I’m not talking about learning curve.

But I digest. I feel like keeping the pennies in the community is a good idea. It’s not like Valle and co. use the money to buy themselves cheap hookers and cocaine only, but rather a lot of it goes into strengthening the scene more by organizing tournaments and events and shit, which ultimately does more for the community than saying fuck and retard on stream, in my opinion.
