You are a disgusting person Lol Man whatās worse was that he had to wipe it down.
The difference is on arcades no one trash talks because they are in range for a swift roundhouse to the neck. The benefit of console is that if you lose you can blame it on the la lalala la la la lag. man thatās terrible.
I admit it I have problems.

If you think your GF sitting around in her underwear is something to get excited about, youāve never had a GF.

Damnā¦you people make arcades sound like the shit. Everyone agrees.
Lag + home = online ass
Arcades + no lag = repect one another or get smacked
lol, yeah I read that thinking āok, she is sitting around like that while he is playing games? Ok, that usually means something, haha.ā ;o

There is something to be said for curling up in the dark, and playing a good rpg. Fighters, however, should be played in the most social atmosphere possible.
Who is Darksydephil?
With all this talk of arcades it makes me want to go and check some out, I havenāt been to one for many years unfortunately. Australia doesnāt seem to have anywhere near as many arcades as there used to be years ago, but there is a place thatās not too far from where I work that seems to keep up to date with the newest machines.
I should go and check it out, I only hesitate because I think I would be in way over my head in terms of skill (that and I heard that the SFIV machine was $2 a credit, ouch), but if they have a VF5 machine there Iāll be especially interested in stopping by sometime.

have you played in an arcade?
I wonāt touch online at all. Itās not even enjoyable to me in the least.
Everyone who is a frequent arcade player starts at that level, but youāll improve at a faster rate than anyone playing online. Itās worth every penny.

This.
I agree that online feels hollow compared to arcades, but Iām not particularly fond of arcades either. Perhaps Iām not nostalgic because I didnāt grow up in an area that had them. I prefer playing at peoples houses or at console events. The actual format is irrelevant here, itās just the atmosphere.

Things I like about online over arcade:
- Donāt gotta use the machine after some greasy/sweaty guy puts his hands on the stick.
- Can hear yourself think, whereas in the arcade the DDR/Guitar Freaks machines can make your ears ring after an hour.
- Console characters!
Things I miss about arcade:
- Watching other people go crazy with some new character.
- The frozen yogurt place right next door.
I do like the moral support at the arcade. When you hit a good combo and everyone goes nuts. Thatās my favorite.
I love the sense of a community of arcade players growing together. When we first got MvC2 at our local college arcade a group of 20 of us started the game together. Weād use all kinds of odd teams with no rhyme or reason. Everyone would come in and out of the arcade for an hour or two between classes.
At times all 20 of us were in the arcade at once with a row of quarters all along the top of the controllers. Someone would get on a streak of 4-5 games and everyone would be itching to be the one to beat them.
Nothing beats the sense of friendship between all the players. Some of us had nothing but the game in common, but if we saw each other on campus we would give each other a knowing nod that we would meet at the arcade later.
Of course the game eventually āevolvedā to top tier play and we lost 3/4 of the group, but I still remember some of those players more than alot of my āfriendsā in college.
I have never gotten a sense of this online. Even though I have āonline friendsā Iāve gotten this sense of community. You never hear the ooohhhhhhhsssss and ahhhhhhhsssssss at new combos or an amazing turn in a match.
One main thing I like about online over arcades is not having to wait in lines.
Agreed 100%
The anxiety of showing off your best for your friends/random crowds is pretty awesome. Though the opposite can happen too but there is something to be said about that as well.
I mostly only play online with SRK members and other members of various boards that are too far for meetup. When I can I try and get out to local arcades as much as I can (though Iāve been unsuccessful lately because of work/school).
Obviously online canāt take away being actually social and getting out there talking/meeting people. Thing is Iāve met many of my closest friends (and fighting game friends) through local tourneys and playing at the arcades.
Thereās no doubt that arcade play is superior to console online play. Thereās a reason why the arcade is synonymous with the word dojo. Playing at an arcade satisifes manās most primal urges with playing in console just doesnāt cut it.
Reasons to play at an arcade
a) take a kid to an arcade, I guarantee you heāll be good at whatever game he intends to play in about 4 months straight. Doesnāt apply to console. Iāve seen console gamers play the same damn game for years and still stuck. The motivation to get good just isnāt there.
Itās like going to the dojo/gym vs exercising at home. If youāve ever been on a sports team like wrestling youād know that exercising at home is NOT the same as going to practice, going to the gym giving all you got. Whereas at home, people buy these expensive ass gym sets tell themselves theyāll work out and end up doing nothing.
b) The arcade experience is memorable. The People are memorable. This is not true for online or console. Nobody says to themself how the online experience is something theyāll remember for the rest of their lives.
c)People who prefer online over console are no doubt scrubs and have no desire to get better. Itās that simple.
Iāll end with this quote.
āAll the bullshit you see in the scene right now is just symptomatic of a natural transition from a hungry, disciplined arcade culture to a spoiled, fat, cocky ps2 internet culture. There is no stopping it or denying it. All the arcades closing down across the country testify to it. The same players from back in the day will continue to take major tournaments because the new kids are soft.ā
