There is something to be said for curling up in the dark, and playing a good rpg. Fighters, however, should be played in the most social atmosphere possible.

With all this talk of arcades it makes me want to go and check some out, I haven’t been to one for many years unfortunately. Australia doesn’t seem to have anywhere near as many arcades as there used to be years ago, but there is a place that’s not too far from where I work that seems to keep up to date with the newest machines.
I should go and check it out, I only hesitate because I think I would be in way over my head in terms of skill (that and I heard that the SFIV machine was $2 a credit, ouch), but if they have a VF5 machine there I’ll be especially interested in stopping by sometime.

I won’t touch online at all. It’s not even enjoyable to me in the least.
Everyone who is a frequent arcade player starts at that level, but you’ll improve at a faster rate than anyone playing online. It’s worth every penny.

I agree that online feels hollow compared to arcades, but I’m not particularly fond of arcades either. Perhaps I’m not nostalgic because I didn’t grow up in an area that had them. I prefer playing at peoples houses or at console events. The actual format is irrelevant here, it’s just the atmosphere.

Things I like about online over arcade:
- Don’t gotta use the machine after some greasy/sweaty guy puts his hands on the stick.
- Can hear yourself think, whereas in the arcade the DDR/Guitar Freaks machines can make your ears ring after an hour.
- Console characters!
Things I miss about arcade:
- Watching other people go crazy with some new character.
- The frozen yogurt place right next door.
I do like the moral support at the arcade. When you hit a good combo and everyone goes nuts. That’s my favorite.
I love the sense of a community of arcade players growing together. When we first got MvC2 at our local college arcade a group of 20 of us started the game together. We’d use all kinds of odd teams with no rhyme or reason. Everyone would come in and out of the arcade for an hour or two between classes.
At times all 20 of us were in the arcade at once with a row of quarters all along the top of the controllers. Someone would get on a streak of 4-5 games and everyone would be itching to be the one to beat them.
Nothing beats the sense of friendship between all the players. Some of us had nothing but the game in common, but if we saw each other on campus we would give each other a knowing nod that we would meet at the arcade later.
Of course the game eventually “evolved” to top tier play and we lost 3/4 of the group, but I still remember some of those players more than alot of my “friends” in college.
I have never gotten a sense of this online. Even though I have “online friends” I’ve gotten this sense of community. You never hear the ooohhhhhhhsssss and ahhhhhhhsssssss at new combos or an amazing turn in a match.
One main thing I like about online over arcades is not having to wait in lines.

The anxiety of showing off your best for your friends/random crowds is pretty awesome. Though the opposite can happen too but there is something to be said about that as well.
I mostly only play online with SRK members and other members of various boards that are too far for meetup. When I can I try and get out to local arcades as much as I can (though I’ve been unsuccessful lately because of work/school).
Obviously online can’t take away being actually social and getting out there talking/meeting people. Thing is I’ve met many of my closest friends (and fighting game friends) through local tourneys and playing at the arcades.
