That’s interesting that Sirlin is into Kurzweil. That really lowered my opinion of him, but it’s not like I had much respect for him outside of being a good gamer. He certainly is not an accomplished writer.
The whole point of science is not to blindly believe in anything, even science. So many people take whatever the scientific community says at any given moment and run with it. People who actually practice the scientific method will take part in only the science that makes sense to them, not just accept anything within the realm of science. I still think Pluto is a planet, so does that mean that all my other opinions about science are invalid? With a dogmatic approach like most technofuturistic nerds take, all my other opinions would be out the door.

To be fair, I would add “good game designer” to that list, as HD Remix is looking great IMO. It’s just the way people around here seem to regard him as this great thinker and give him a free pass that’s kinda sad, more than anything. I understand the “doing a lot for the scene” thing, but that doesn’t have to exclude honesty.
The thing is, being a Dawkins fanboy then doing the exact same shit you call out Christians for seems to be a common theme. Penn & Teller continue to deny global warming, Bill Maher pushes for “alternative medicine”, Sam Harris is into eastern mysticism, and Christopher Hitchens continues to believe that shooting lots of Muslims is the best way to stop extremists. And that’s not even getting into the laugh-out-loud ridiculous ones like the Rational Response Squad.
This becomes a problem when you advocate an evidence-based worldview, as atheists usually do. It’s why I’ve come to believe that the whole concept of “atheist activism” misses the point - people end up turning all sorts of secular issues into religions anyway, without recognizing it.
I think some of these criticisms are sort of unfair, Josh (as opposed to everyone else who’s just being silly). Ray Kurzweil is an interesting guy with some surprisingly accurate predictions statistics and some very interesting future predictions… While I’m sure some people eat it all up, and grow complacent, eating their 5 thousand pills a day, Kurzweil is no philosopher nor fitness guru, so who cares what he thinks about it? Sirlin might, sure, but we don’t know that. He’s a Mathematician who saw Kurzweil at a game design conference and who read a few books after. Of course he’s going to find it the numbers interesting. Unless you buy into all his crazy stuff, theres nothing faith based about it. Numbers backed up by trends and previous evidence says we could very well be able to power the world with solar energy by 2020? INTERESTING. He has numbers and evidence to back it up. They could be wrong evidence and bad formulas, but it’s still FAR different than an faith based word view. That’s it. Unless you’re reading somewhere I haven’t, I haven’t read him talk about any of that stuff. Same goes with Dawkins. He clearly digs it, but he’s not some random blogger writing about how religion is the devil and how nano machines are jesus. I think you were being awfully assumptious.
Is he a great thinker? In his field I think he is (or at least a very good one). As anything else? No, but, unless I’ve missed something (excluding some glancing single sentence comments), when does he try and be anything else?
I agree people shouldn’t just blindly suck his dick, but they already don’t. He practically got lynched by CCC2 and every change for HDR has been judged under extreme scrutiny. It’s no like he gets a free pass or anything.
(edit: For the record, while I knew Kurzweil was crazy, I didn’t know he was quite that crazy so it was still an informative post. But it still doesn’t change his logically generated numbers, which make for interesting predictions. They are what they are (right or wrong) and the fact that he’s nuts in other areas outside his field doesn’t make THAT much of a difference)

For the record, I think it’s pretty immature to like or respect someone significantly less as a person just because of one of their opinions, unless they condone some extreme form of bigotry. It’s certainly reasonable to hold even all of their opinions as a whole in lower esteem, but a high level of of intolerance for opinions that differ from your own makes you by definition a bigot yourself.
Some of you in here make it sound like you can’t be friends with someone unless you share identical perspectives and all of your views line up perfectly with one another. I know (hope) none of you guys are actually that thick-skulled and narrow-minded so I humbly advise that you watch how you express your personal, subjective displeasure with, say… something as trivial as whether or not someone believes in the theories of a particular futurist.
But that’s just my opinion. :wonder:
