I cannot feel sorry for them because I do not feel the parents went above and beyond to find employment (they’d need to scan his black hat card to prove that to me, or something – as I know mines are actively hiring at all times and a simple EMT card can allow you to take in 100k+ or so a year. I say this as its basically the fallback job for anyone who is comfortable with the thought of mining.). Also I didn’t read seasonal field worker anywhere in the article.

White people should try working the jobs they don’t want to do.

Also who’s feeling great about their strong family support system right about now?

And to finish being a dick – I disagree that I could ever be homeless and I’m ‘between jobs’ and never ‘unemployed’ (not literally).

Also not relevant to these fat old people, but kind of on topic:

I actually lived like that family during my teens, after a few major financial setbacks and too many people acting like dicks. Me, my mom and my brother were all working, while we lived in different friends/relatives/church members’ places, each time burning bridges after overstaying our welcome. When things really got bad, I skipped a year of school. I returned to HS in 11th grade without actually ever attending 10th grade.

And we lived great before that. I lived in Rancho Bernardo CA (fairly wealthy suburb) during elementary school.

So hopefully people don’t read that article thinking it’s an interesting anomaly that the news picked up on. It’ll probably be the norm for many American families and kids from now on.

weed is stronger these days lol

seriously though I can imagine baby boomers really stroking their self satisfaction boner while reading this and complaining about “kids these days”

lol at Ann Curry (annual salary: 10 million USD) doing an interview about poor people trying to relate to them with fake ass tears.

The tale of the story is shit happen and how will you deal with it. God forbid if that happen to me and I was on the street I would have no shame in staying in a shelter. At the same time I would scratch and claw my way back to where I was even if it mean working three jobs. I’m just glad that I have no kids right now.

Man, how the fuck do these people stay fat if they’re homeless? Or is there some sort of non-miserable, non-bum homeless out there?

Yeah, not to be rude but that whole family is fat. If they just stopped going to Taco Bell they’d save hundreds of dollars a month.

Easy, they eat lots and lots of garbage.

Wow. Shameful to be reading about something like this happening in the supposedly “most well developed country in the world.” Definitely a good example of why we need socialized health care and for labor laws to be enforced better.

Funny that that article namechecked Springsteen and Born to Run. I’m listening to that as I type this.

I understand people not needing to get a driver’s license to explore much anymore what with the internet. Used to be you needed to drive to find out what was happening in the next state, now all you have to do is firre up the net. No excuse not to have your license though.

Moving is a risk. I’ve moved twice since leaving my parents’ place at 23 and I’ve incurred somewhat bad circumstances, financial and otherwise, in the process of getting on my feet both times I did. The safety net of family support is starting to become very important again which is why I think people are more hesitant to move a thousand miles away.

As for the rest of your post…All I’ll say is that should this happen to you, I hope folks are more sympathetic to your circumstances than you are to theirs.

Terrible nutrition + lack of physical activity - robust health education.

IDK it seems they were all about being Robust when it came to their health.

Isn’t being overweight/obese pretty common among the poor? You can get a whole days calories for like 3 bucks at mc doogles, and you’ll probably feel hungry again in 4 hours. Sadly unhealthy food is cheaper than healthy food.

Actually, the rate of obesity goes way up as the income level goes down. One reason is because the poorer you are, the more likely you’ll go for carb rich, cheap, fast food, you know, like cup ramen, Mcwhatever. Poor folks eat stuff that has been processed, often with high fructose corn syrup. Also, if your body is starving, your body will digest its muscle and store more fat.

Look at these teenagers/20 year olds with their metabolism meter at max who still think good health and nutrition is free. If you’re poor as the family in the article, you’re either rail-thin, or shapeless. Either way, you eat whatever you can afford, and the cheapest food in the US tends to be pre-made crap that doesn’t need to be cooked in a kitchen or stored in a refrigerator (since you usually need a home to use a kitchen or refrigerator)

Dumb post.

You usually do not post dumb things.

Like, ever.

You DO know what*** property*** really means, right, Rock? :shake:

Laws like that are at the very essence of what the U.S. was meant to be.

  1. Shit food is the most affordable, as everyone else has mentioned. What they could do is learn to calorie count, at the very least. Sure, you have to live off shit, but if two burgers is your whole day’s calories, then so be it. Cut the thing into quarters and drink water.
  2. The dude is diabetic. Type 1 or Type 2 is not mentioned, so we’re not sure if its caused by him being fat or if it was inherited.
  3. A lack of physical activity during the day does more to make you fat than your food does.

That 9 year old girl’s birdhouse is quite impressive. Unfortunately, her talents are probably the result having no distraction a modern home would provide.

I hope they can get themselves out of this rut…

TL;DR - Corporations are raking in the dough at an unprecedented rate, while wages are in the toilet. Also, the top wage-earners are holding the most wealth ever in American history. How about them apples?

Either there’s some kind of master plan at work here, or the internet has made us too passive to care.
