Good stuff Mullah. I’m at work right now and I am posting this from my phone so I can’t update now, but I will when I get home. The only thing is that the current tier list has the Ryu match 5-5. Not 6-4 in favor of Ryu. But I will take care of that when I get home. Plus I have a few things to say about the Ryu match. I love the Ryu match. I think it’s 5-5, but Ryu has to play by Blanka rules in that match. Its just that Ryu is so good, he can play by those rules and still win.
i dont put much stock into the tier list, be it jap wiki or something homegrown. But i do in your advice as i think you have a very solid blanka. So i look forward to your writeup, if you think it’s 5-5 then you must think blanka has some strengths to match up against the advantages over blanka i listed. Would be nice if viscant would go in depth into matchups he feels he knows well, this thread would be a very good read then. I started using blanka for the first time in 5 months this week, his AA U2 is quite slow to startup :-/
I just want to what the official tier list number on all matches ups. Then in the write up, we can talk about how we agree or disagree with what the tier list says. I do think that match is 5-5 though.
Use U2 AA after a focus crumple. It is all sorts of awesome!
a nice thing other threads do is to contain matchup advice in spoilers. If you do it that way you can put any characters i do in my own spoiler beneath your own so people can click on both and read them in full. Ur thread of course but just something to consider.
Ryu Matchup by The Realyst
Spoiler
i tried to do FA > ultra 2 last night for the first time and did the AA one by mistake, doh!
Ryu Matchup by Mullah
Spoiler
i find the 1632147kkk method makes blanka almost a full screen spd’er whenever the opp does a fireball
I don’t think my phone is processing the spoiler thing correctly, but I understand what you are saying. We’ll see how it goes.
BTW, I did mean for you to do the anti air version. Hit a FA, then dash forward and do the AA version and see what happens.
is it? i must have done it too late, i’ll mess around with it otnight

Awesome :wow:
Now this is a matchup thread
I’ve updated the Ryu match, but it’s definitely finished. I haven’t decided how I’m going to do it yet. But really, none of these match ups are ever finished. I want to always update.
EDIT : Updated Abel also. Horizontal Ball works ok vs. Breathless, but EX Rainbow Roll completely avoids it.
Wouldn’t Hori ball work every time because it breaks armor? Nice thread by the way.
If Abel release right away, it could grab Blanka out of the start up frames of the Hori Ball. Not a problem with EX Rainbow Roll.
Great thread. Can’t wait for the Honda match-up to be posted. I struggle with him quite a bit.
This is excellent. Thanks for taking the time to set this up.
i’ll do a piece on balrog as thats one matchup i used to know very well. i knew the honda and sagat match pretty well too. didn’t know many other matchups very well, just bits here and there.
I also know the Honda match. It’s pretty simple really, but I hate it. Would be good to see what you have to say about it. I was going to do the top tier characters first, but whatever. As long as they all get done, the order doesn’t really matter. If I get done at work early today, I’ll work on another character.
hey dude, thx for incorporating the spoiler, can you put my entire writeup into the ryu spoiler pls as its missing some important info.
Thought i’d do balrog, one of the few matchups i usedt o feel pretty good at. After a bad tournament loss to europes best boxer, i studied this matchup hard and the next time i faced the same player i was able to eek out a 6-4 win (but that was xbl so lag ftw).
Current Tier List Match Rating:
6-4 Boxer
Can Punish Horizontal Ball on Block (and upball on hit) with:
Dash Straight, super & U1
Recommended Ultra to use:
U1
Notes- Can throw boxer out of his dash punches
- Can hop through dash punches
- Boxer can be swpet out of reversal non ex headbutts
- Electricity cannot be hit by any headbutt
- St.lp can be used to punish blocked swing blows and overhead dash punches.
- Blanka?s cr.mp beats all jump ins
- Boxers cr.hp beats all jump ins
Long Range Strats
This is a great range for Blanka at full screen you can mix up the below:
- Build meter with elec reps and in doing so beat any dash punches except a max range sweeping dash punch.
- You can jump forward in anticipation of a dash punch and land a juicy combo.
- React to any non ex dash punch with an immediate slide.
- For the above, boxer risks a fair chunk of life for each of his offensive options abovewhilst possibly dealing not a lot of damage to Blanka.
Mid Screen Strats
Mid screen is a mixed bag, and where most of the fight will take place.
- Outside Boxer?s headbutt range: it?s a great place to hang out. You can throw out a st.mp out of range and catch any errant dash punches or pokes, all while buffering fierce elec to come out right after to tag any attempts to counter poke with a dash straight or headbutt. You can FA to catch the same attempts to counter or do a neutral jump right to catch any attempts to dash straight with a combo. At max mid range distance you?re safe from his sweep and his headbutt so you can cycle elec/mp/neutraljump and FA
- Within Boxer?s headbutt range: you cannot neutral jump. And you can?t do random elec unless you know the cool down will finish more quickly than the time it takes for him to walk forward and sweep.
-Within Boxer?s st.hp range: Blanka?s st.mp > all of boxers pokes except st.hk. Blankas st.hp will beat boxers st.hk to the punch but loses to his st.hp. So to win the poking war you will have to mix up st.mp and st.hp. If your opponent doesn?t know how to counter st.mp just use that. Boxer doesn?t lose to blankas pokes, it can go either way.
Close Quarters Strats
Due to his great cr.lp and counterhit traps you want to avoid the upclose battle under most circumstances.
- If boxer is pressuring you with jabs just block and delayed cr.tech after the first jab, if he does 2 or more jabs you can easily st.hk him if he tries to walk in to tick throw (its easy to see coming). Blocking rush is good, it builds ultra your Ace in the hole.
Countering Boxers corner pressure.
- by the time you get into the corner you should have built up your ultra meter, stay crouched, the whole time, this will undoubtedly tempt boxer to throw the overhead punch. If blocked you land your U1. Tick throws are easy to late cr.tech or st.hk the only thing to worry about is a counter hit trap (cr.lp x2 walk back cr.puch x straight x super etc) you just have to choose when not to cr.tech.
- if you block a swing blow or overhead and don?t have U1 then st.lp x ex rainbow. If you have no meter then st.lp x hop and hope they miss the cr.lp punish. You can poke with st.hp as they should be trying to get close, if theyre standing just out of range just stay crouching and wait for an overhead or swing.
Boxers wakeup
-Get in close on boxers wakeup and if you hop crossup hit him with a meaty cr.mk x fierce elec. Or if you don?t, to avoid the ex punch, just fierce elec.
- I would recommend fake crossup electricity almost everytime until they catch on or they get super/ultra meter. Fake crossup electricity works* vs everyone, I?m talking daigo standard players its actually the only mixup I use with blanka. (*nb ? doesn?t work vs scrubs)
- Safe jump boxer after knockdowns and throw once you land, if they mash jab you will grab them, if they are throw tech masters then catch the delayed cr.tech with crossup > cr.lk> pause (for 1f lol) > cr.lk > st.hk. This is one of the most important skills to acquire (see conditioning boxer below)
Conditioning Boxer:
- If you start the match with lots of focus attacks you can make the boxer abandon straights and start doing TAPs and swingblows. You might choose to do this for 3 reasons. 1) FA becomes a huge liability once he gets super/U1 (boxer can release tap and supercancel it for massive damage etc) so you want to get utility from it whilst you can. 2) FA causes the opponent to actually go on the offesive because they can break your focus easily with TAP and swing. This opens them up to being countered with elec and neutral jumps. And 3) Tap and swing are easier to counter than dash straight as they have longer recovery.Remember either swing or overhead or badly spaced TAP blocked is a free st.lp x fierce ball everytime. Always watch for overhead or swingblows as theyre gifts!
- If you start repping electricity you will make the boxer advance and attempt to sweep. You can FA their attempts if you know your elec cool down time and space it well.
- If you remain crouched you make the overhead punch an attractive option for boxer which is great for u1 punish.
- On crossups you are free to attempt a throw before he can get out his jab. Once conditioned into late cr.teching you can beging using cr.tech traps (cr.lk x2 x st.hk etc)
Closing words
This match can be quite enjoyable and plays unlike any other Blanka match. In this match Blanka enjoys the rare chance to have higher damage punishes than boxer. This match can go one of 2 ways and a mixture of both, either you will be looking for a way around well placed dash punches or you will be faced with a counter poking turtle. Match changes drastically when boxer achieves super (and to a lesser degree U1)
Good shit Mullah! I think I’m going to just copy and paste that one to the Boxer post. I’ll just add things here and there like the fact that you can block punish Balrog’s over head with U1. But I think I will leave what you put as is for the most part. Oh, and the tier list has Blanka vs. Rog 6.5-3.5 in Rog’s favor. According to that list, Rog is Blanka’s worse match.
I just want to let people know that I am not the best player in the world and I will probably make mistakes. So if people catch something that I need to fix, don’t hesitate to post up.
I am also pretty close to being finished with the Honda match also. So we will probably have 2 characters updated today!
cool dude, pls pls copy the missing ryu bits in my writeup into my spoiler pls
i’d like to see your ken writeup, i actually dont like fighting ken but i notice youre pretty good at it. i’ve never lost to a ken in a tournament but i dont find it a comfy match, i think i try to fight at close range and thats probably not the best way.
Ok, I will try to work on Ken at work if it’s not busy tomorrow and I will fix Ryu also as well as add Honda.
The Ken match is in Blanka favor for sure. You turtle him out, he really can’t do anything.
