The Chess Thread

I’m on a chess hiatus right now, but I’ll probably be back at some point. Name on the site is ebsundmark

Good stuff, I’ll add you and if/when you come back we can play some.

Do you play on chess.com?

https://challonge.com/2019chessworldcup

They made a challonge bracket for this

18-year-old Jeffery Xiong scored another upset at the FIDE World Cupas he knocked out 18th-seed Jan-Krzysztof Duda

He’s only 18 and American!!!

Will the grand finals be Ding Liren VS Jeffery Xiong?!?!

Also, here’s the top 8:

I haven’t competed in 20 years, but I’m in the process of returning back to my prime and more, which is going to be very tough. I don’t have the addictive interest right now, sadly.

Chess helped me learn more about myself and life.

What kind of competing did you do?

They had mass tournaments in my state Louisiana, but I’m from New Orleans. I also, challenged other schools while I was in school.

The bad part about playing chess at the time was by being a minor growing up poor, not having your parents to support you for traveling outside of state, regardless of telling me not to quit.

I say this humbly today looking back when I was a child, being one of the big fish wasn’t as it was cracked up to be, because that’s how I discontinued it at the time, because it was difficult to find challenges.

The very few grandmasters that one the teachers referred me to helped me forward so much of myself to where I needed more of that, but I couldn’t get that in hopes of becoming the best I could be, because I couldn’t travel.

However, with the resources today, things are easier now to re-elevate yourself.

Should the grand masters in fighting games teach?..

wtf someone other than jion wansu is posting on here???

i’ve only been playing vs bulldancer in daily games (3-7 days per move), and he has been destructioning me. his daily rating is hovering around 1650, mines at 1600, but his actual daily rating should be higher, however he is constantly losing on time (3 days per move).

i will play anyone on here, jieyangh. if you have low rating, i only want to play unranked, because otherwise you fuckers will use a chess engine to cheat and win and get ez rating points while causing my rating to tank!!!

openings are completely unimportant until you are a chess grandmaster when you spend weeks analyzing tiniest variations looking for an edge. until then it dont matter, unless youre playing blitz and memorizing a few traps.

the general idea is that e4 games are more taktical and d4 games are more positional, whatever that even means

my strat with white is always to play d4 and then combo into c4.

as black if they do e4 i do karo khan c6. if they do d4 i do nf6. and if they do something other than that then i will do e5 or d5 or resign in disgust.

I reinstalled the app. I’m up for games. Add ebsundmark.

I’m horribly rusty though.

I’ve come to the conclusion (I could be totally wrong) that there are only 2 starting chess openings for both black and white that are “top tier” if you will…

They are 1. e4 e5 and 1. d4 d5

e4 e5 is for tactical, combination players (fireworks chess) - offensive players

d4 d5 is for technical, position players (I like to say quiet and/or sometimes boring chess) - defensive players

yeah the textbooks say e4 e5 is more tactical and d4 d5 is more positional. i dunno what that means but after playing tons of games i came to realize it was true. d4 d5 is way more quiet. e4 e5 and you can end up with fried liver attack.

i dont like d5 as black though cause then they c4 me. so i do nf6 in response to d4 instead

I think I added you. Hit me up for a game sometime

EDIT: Ah you did! Sorry it took me so long to get back with you.

Interesting, thanks!

I generally just play by feel, which works sometimes, but not enough that I think it’s something I can hang my hat on. O guess I just need to play more.

assuming you have never played before and are just starting. the biggest mistake for people who just started (800 rating) is that

  1. they hang their pieces (your pieces can be captured for free in one move)
  2. they dont capture their opponents hanging pieces

if you just focus on that, you can literally add hundreds of points to your ratings ez. my blitz rating sucks its 200 points lower than my correspondence rating. in blitz i still make those two mistakes because im not good with the time pressure, and if i did i could probably jump another 100 points or so

Most e4/e5 openings still lead to rather symmetrical positions. I cannot count the amount of semi-open, positional Ryu Lopezes I’ve played.

d4/d5 rarely leads to anything crazy though, that much is true.
