The Castlevania Thread

The Gamespot review says the 360 version chugs a bit. I’m going to change my preorder to PS3.

Dr. B runs smoothly on all systems, including NES and original Game Boy.

360 version also requires a disc swap unless you install the first disc to HD first.

between that and the PS3 being the better pad made the choice obvious for me. the frame rate issues even moreso.

Two things:

One, I actually like the Simon redesign. Yes it’s markedly bishounen, but Simon never fit with the look of any of the other heroes, even before Kojima stepped in. The redesigned Simon looks like the rest of the cast. He fits the Victorian thing a lot better, it’s not Conan after all.

Two, Gabriel looks nothing like a barbarian IMO. Dude’s got a full coat and a cross for a weapon. Looks more like a “holy knight/paladin” type, like Leon in Lament. Only difference is with his in game model, he’s a bit more “manly”. He’s got the broader shoulders, the refined jawline and his physique is a bit more built than that typical CV guys (even old Simon). I love his design though, both in the Kojima art on the cover and the in game.

ok, i need some help here from some castlevania fans.

in regards to lament of innocence and curse of darkness for ps2…

do those two games have challenging platforming?

because when i think castlevania, i think of challenging and interesting platforming gameplay from the old nintendo 8 bit nes days.

thats what i want to know from people who have played LoI and CoD.
does it have challenging platforming?

3 of my favorite games are Bujingai, Shinobi, and Nightshade for the ps2.
those three games are challenging and super fun platformers.
and i was wondering if the castlevania games on the ps2 have platforming gameplay, or are they just hack n slash?
since i dont know.

Lament of Innocence had some difficult platforming bits, but it was only due to the imprecise nature of the camera.

Oh yeah, and fuck the platforming in the cloud city level of Bujingai. That shit sucked.

ya thats what i hate
challenges in games, given by shitty camera programming

Yes. The difficulty in the platforming in Bujingai was all due to the camera. The hardest bit in that cloud city level was when you had to make over half a dozen wall running jumps in a row while having the camera face your character. If you jumped a bit early or late, you would either miss the wall or be too low on the wall to make the next jump. Falling meant that you lost a good bit of your HP, which was pretty brutal. I ended up having to replay the level at least five times just to get the jumps for that one section.

At least the boss was just as difficult.

dammit!

David Cox (CastlevaniaLOS) on Twitter

so Jason Isaacs is Dracula, Robert Carlyle is Belmont, and the game is narrated by Patrick Stewart. Sounds awesome.

I’m surprised the 360 version is inferior to the PS3 version (in terms of graphical related issues, loading times, etc.); usually it’s the other way around.

I have to say, I’m going to miss the old canon. I kind of wish they would have covered how the Moras family ended up with Vampire Killer and what happens to the Belmont clan around that time, but I suppose they could always come back to that canon in a future game or 3DS game.

that’s not a bad thing, I made a EURO psn account in case of things like this…

It might be a stunt of sorts or they may be playing it so that it can fit in the canon if you want it to. I don’t have the timelines in front of me but from what I checked into this game takes place years, a few decades before Lamont of Innocence, the first game in the canon (and yes, a very lame game at that IMHO). Gabriel doesn’t have Vampire Killer so that which is attained during Lamont so that part is fine. The biggest contradiction I see (granted, without playing the game) is Dracula being in this game when he shouldn’t be since he shouldn’t be Drac until after Lamont. Other than that, without playing the actual game it could POSSIBLY fit into canon…

Or just retcon Lamont of Innocence out of existence / pretend it never happened and there there you go…

I didn’t make another account at all.

I really want to try this too. Been a semi-Castlevania fan for a long time.

Lords of Shadow is a canon reboot to the series. It is not related to the old canon at all. For the old canon, Lament of Innocence is still the birth of the Belmont vs Dracula story and the birth of Vampire Killer. If they wanted to, they could create Vampire Killer in Lords of Shadow and it wouldn’t even matter to the rest of Castlevania’s old canon (doubt they would do that anyways since it would be a slap in the face to old fans).

Yeah I know what they are officially saying but eh for long running game franchises and stuff for me it’s just what you walk away with, especially when you are talking over 30 games… You can always have your own personal canon if you want to. I mean we are all supposed to pick which version of Castlevania 1 happened anyway so… IE FUCK LAMONT OF INNOCENCE. NEVER HAPPENED. WORK WITH ME HERE!

Re: Canon.

Lords of Shadow is supposed to be its own thing, separate from Castlevania canon. That said, the trailer and some reviews hinted that there may be some ties.

If there are, I suspect it’s going to be something like this: when Drac was killed in 1999, he didn’t really die: while part of him was reincarnated in Soma Cruz, another part went back in time to a parallel timeline, and his influence on this timeline has caused the darkness in the world, possibly some sort of alternate history. Think the first Fullmetal Alchemist anime, or the latest Star Trek film.

In this alternate continuity, Dr. B will be hands off, for, like in our reality, he believes in the virtue of man.

you should be able to just make one. I made one randomly when I made my Japanese account just to have all the bases covered. I only use them for Demos though.

Demo is downloading as I type, I’m excited as fuck to try it out.

Lament. :stuck_out_tongue:

Man, Lament of Innocence was good. Not great, but good. Why so mad over it?

LoI was a competent beat 'em up/platformer. It didn’t piss me off like Bujingai, which is an accomplishment to itself.

Seriously, what was up with Bujingai’s ending?

I stant by what I said. Lamont never happened.

My main beef with the game was…

For Lament of Innocence but you really should never play this game…

[details=Spoiler]Death as the final boss? Are you kidding me? Since FOREVER, before the Soma games Death was always the boss right before Dracula. How are you going to make him the final boss after fighting a bootleg / not ready for prime time TV Dracula? That’s just bad game design right there to have someone expecting something, you know Dracula after Death like oh I dunno ALMOST THE ENTIRE FRANCHICSE and then not getting it. When I beat Death (who was mind numbingly easy BTW) I felt stupified that I beat the entire game. I went online, figuring I missed something, had a low percentage but… Like WOW… That’s it?

STORYLINE SHMORYLINE MAN I DON’T PLAY CASTLEVANIA TO FIGHT THE STUPID GRIM REAPER AS THE FINAL BOSS IT’S ME VERSUS DRACULA!!! HELL I’M PISSED ALREADY THAT FRANKENSTEIN WAS DEMOTED FROM A BOSS TO A RANDOM CHARACTER WALKING AROUND IN A LOT OF GAMES GAWD… :annoy:

Oh and bad level design, too short, bad camera, yadda yadda yadda. I liked the origin of Vampire Killer though. All Castlevania games have great music. That’s it.[/details]

If it helps I think I’m the only person on the planet who liked Castlevania Judgement and didn’t mind Ohbata’s designs. This does have a lot to do with me being sick and tired of Ayami Kojima’s stuff though. Biker boy goth Simon > Fur coat wearing Simon. Who’s with me? cricket noise crickey noise cricket noise
