People are saying that this will be the first (and only) week HD-DVD might actually win this year, as it has a BOGO and Bourne releasing as a day-and-date. I don’t know, though. With Harry Potter releasing in dual formats, Pirates going into the second week, Superbad, and The Simpsons Movie, along with High School Musical 2 (this garbage will sell well, I’m sure) and maybe another BOGO on the blu side, it’s going to be a tough match this week.
If you look at the adoption rate of DVD in its first year versus VHS, HDM (as a whole, counting both formats) is actually doing better and getting adopted more quickly. The only big obstacle for it right now is this pointless and stupid format war. But, also, don’t forget the whole DVD vs. DivX thing.
The recommended Blu-rays post has been updated with all movies that received a 5.0/5.0 at HighDefDigest for overall, video or audio… for you guys who just want a good Blu-ray that’s worth your money overall, a movie to show off your 1080p big screen, or a movie to show off your high-def audio system.

I thought this was a very interesting article, since it talks about us and puts us in prime position to take HDM market trends by the reins.
maybe someone here can help me…
For some reason when I play a Bluray movie on my PS3 on my 1080P LCD, it looks really grainy and not sharp at all.
What can be the culprit of this problem?
What movie are you playing? Not every BD has the same transfer, and some are actually meant to look that way.
Mission Impossible 3 is the BluRay movie i tried to watch… but it also happens with regular DVD’s… when I put Superbad (regular DVD) in the PS3 it looked grainy… when I switched it to my Sony DVD player it looked fine.
Are you running your PS3 at 1080p with upscaling turned on? Try that.
Is it just certain sections of the film, or the entire film in general? I had MI3 and Ive never noticed any ‘bad’ grain. Some film producers actually include the grain for effect, other times it can be because of low quality equipment or transfer progress. Also do you use responsible settings for your HDTV? If you have your screen set to dynamic mode or very high settings you’ll be more likely to notice grain. Dynamic if you have that switched on, is meant for showrooms and not home use, it can be harmful for your screen to use that exclusively. Also last, if you are sitting to close to the screen, sitting a little further back can reduce some of the shortcomings of a film’s transfer.
So try tweaking your screen’s settings down a touch and see if that makes a difference. MI3 might have had a touch of grain, most films do, infact the only film I have which has no great whatsoever is Crank. Bad ones from what I remember are House of Flying Daggers, The Descent and Silent Hill where it all just seems a little over the top.
Dark areas are generally the most problematic, and only Disney (and to a lesser extent, Sony Pictures) does them very well.
What’s the best bang for your buck projector to watch Blu-ray movies? Do any of you guys own a projector? I’m curious what type of setup you guys have…
I don’t know about projectors, but my setup consists of my PS3 connected to the Westinghouse LVM-37w3 via a generic HDMI cable I bought from Newegg.
How much would you be looking to spend? Optoma have a nice range, JVC have a great new projector out, forget the model no but it costs an arm and a leg anyway. If I were you Id buy an 8th gen plasma now that screen prices have come down a long way. Pioneer Kuro or Panasonic PZ range, so much better than any LCD out there.
hello i got a PS3 (best console EVER!!!)
i got the 5 free movies for free deal can some one pls help out by telling me how long will it take for them to send?
great thread!!!
can wait for simpsons its going to rock!!
mine took about 2 months…i forgot the exact time frame though. it’s posted in the ps3 forums somewhere.
I have a 720p projector & a 1080p LCD TV.
The bulbs are uber expensive to replace (nearly the price of the projector). I’d say you should spend your money on a nice LCD TV instead, unless you’ve got a room dedicated to the projector with enough room for a projection screen that’s around 8 feet or bigger (mine’s 10.5 feet), you don’t mind paying nearly the price of the projector for replacement bulbs & you can darken the windows during the daytime with more than just blinds (I just bought some cheap ass black poster boards from Office Depot) or even better, a room without windows.
P.S. My buy 2, get 1 free Blu-ray deal has been shipped! Yeye! I hope I got Pursuit of Happyness… cause the other Blu-rays from that list that I didn’t have were pretty shitty.
DAMM thats a long time i guess we could wait right?
Another question how much should i expect to get if i sale some Blueray movies?
like should i put them on ebay or go down to the local video store?
10-15 each on eBay or Craigslist for the movies from the 5 free Blu-ray deal.
Yeah i have a dedicated Home Theater room. I’m using X1 infocus & its still doing fine…Since i have some money to blow off, i was thinking of upgrading it…Maybe i should just wait until the technology improves more & will probably be a lot cheaper by next year. Here’s my setup, its at the end of the post…
