Just watched Forgetting Sarah Marshall and The Mist. And Evil Dead 2 (again). FSM was hilarious, can’t believe I missed out on that in theaters. The Mist was pretty good, but it felt more suspenseful than horror. It was thought-provoking though, I kept thinking about it after it ended and it was a really interesting movie. Evil Dead 2 is still a classic, though the Blu-Ray transfer isn’t anything to write home about.
I rented The Signal, which I hear is a way better version of “The Happening” (which I will watch anyways for entertainment purposes). Anyone see this yet?
I also have Dark City: Director’s Cut… is the DC much different than the original? I want to show this movie to some friends who haven’t seen it and don’t know if we should watch the original cut or the DC.
Yup! And it gets worse. A lot of the same crowd sided with HD DVD in the first place because they will embrace anything that is against Sony. Some of them reluctantly took the Blu plunge but refused to buy Sony BD players and try to avoid Sony Pictures titles.
Yeah I recently got that unrated box set. Watched 40 year old version and FSM so far, Knocked Up soon. The quality is definitely good enough, not perfect, but still real pretty. These movies have a shit ton of extras, out takes, commentary, etc… I was real impressed with all the extra stuff to watch on them. Definitely recommend if you are a fan of the Apatow crew.
Kuni Gone Wild is the best extra ever. There’s one that got popular on Youtube from the DVD version of Knocked Up’s extras which was around 2 1/2 minutes long, but the one on the Blu-ray is like 6 minutes.
WHA!?!?!?!?!?
Damn you for taunting me…how about a shave?
Looks like I’ll be getting Incredble Hulk Bluray eventually…I’ve read hat the Audio is one of the best out there.
And maybe Godfather Collection.
Nice. I wanted American Gangster but they didn’t have it at the place I buy.
Coppola Restoration is alright. It’s not as good as new films or even old films that were recently remastered, but it’s as good as Godfather is ever going to be. Must buy for any big fan.
The Godfather restoration is about as good as it’s going to get. From what I read, the original masters were severely damaged so the fact that it looks the way it does is pretty amazing.
Has anybody seen Casino on blu? I was watching it last night on DVD and it looked so dull. How clean is the transfer on blu ray? Would it be worth picking up? I don’t want to drop 20 on something that looks marginally better. Love the movie though.
Also, I’ve probably mentioned it before, but Surf’s up is hysterical, and looks AMAZING. The water looks fuckin’ real. Check it out.
You should look into Baraka. There is NO narrative whatsoever, so it’s not really a documentary per se, but I think it would appeal to the same audience that would like documentaries. It’s just a film portrayal life and civilization, with some really unique cinematography. It’s hard to say if you’d like it, but you should at least check it out.
IMO, Casino is one of the best Blu-ray transfers for pre-2000 movies. but still sort of in the same boat as most movies older than a decade. The transfer is pretty good, but obviously not quite like 2007/08 movies and doesn’t quite get the Blade Runner treatment. With that been said, it is a really good transfer and we can only hope every other 90’s classic looks as good.
Anyway…
-Kill Bill 1 & 2 finally came out in Canada. Picking that up tomorrow, as well as Sin City, which didn’t come out in the states. Oh how the tables have turned.
Can some of you guys fill me in on what receivers you use for your bluray audio? I am talking of Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD. I have been shopping around, and am curious as to what you guys prefer.
