oh yea i own tons of blu rays (almsot 300 last time i counted) and ~250 hd dvd’s and i notice the difference and appreciate it
the thing is, the people they like to call “joe six pack” might not care enough to invest the extra money into blu ray which is why i don’t see blu ray getting popular until it can hit $99
eh, lol my friend was one of those people. He’s like fuck HD as long as I see the screen its ok. So he asks his mom (whose never heard his opinion on this subject before) and she says “Shit as long as I can see the screen” lolol but since then he’s kinda changed his stance on HD though, after I got him to buy the 360 VGA cable for DMC4.
So what is the deal with 7.1 surround sound, do Bluray movies take advantage of this? Are current movies even made with this type of surround sound in mind?
To be honest, I’m not sure that those statistics are particularly REALLY good news for Blu-Ray and physical media in general. 2008 is Blu-Ray’s year. They’ve won the war against HD DVD, the PS3 is stronger than ever, and from 2008 and on, every film released in theatre will eventually be seen on Blu-Ray. With a breakthrough this big, I would think that it would have a much more enormous impact on the industry than a measly 1.6% increase in sales & rentals of physical media, and 1.1% increase in player sales over 2007’s figures, when consumers were still confused as fuck over BD vs HD. This is especially when Blu-Ray has climbed to a steady 7:93 ratio vs DVD.
Either way, I didn’t expect Blu-Ray to take the industry by storm but as long as every Hollywood release from now on will eventually be available on Blu-Ray, and more masterpieces of the past also work their way in, I’m more than happy. Price drops are always good too.
:u: You have to take into consideration, however, that that increase holds for all physical media sales in general. When you factor that DVD sales have been declining for the last few years and that the sales increase of a new format that only carries 7% of the market brought up the sales numbers of the entire media catalog by 1.1%, that’s fantastic news for Blu-ray.
I’ve taken that into account as well as the fact that a lot of people who have recently gotten into Blu-Ray have stopped spending money on DVD’s to further extend their BD budget (I would fall under this category). However, even in my case and others like me, I’ve purchased about 40 BDs over the past four months, which is more than how many DVD’s I’ve purchased in any given year… and 40 BD’s isn’t a lot either.
I haven’t taken a close look at the statistics and trends or anything, but I still think that 1.6% increase in sales is a little low, amidst the turning point in the revolution of physical media.
cool so warner is cutting prices on movies that have been out on the format for over a year
how is that big news
maybe if they lowered the MSRP on new titles or catalog titles it would be a big deal, but they’re just discounting a bunch of titles they probably have a surplus of sitting in a warehouse
