The Blu-ray Thread v1.0

i really liked 310 to yuma. i think it’s a great movie. you should check out unforgiven on blu-ray after if you liked yuma.

i also got my discounts from amazon through email. i’m in love with amazon!!!

ok i just woke up to more refunds from amazon lol. i sent 2 emails cause i forgot to include requested refunds for items a little over 30 days.

the second refund refunded on top of the refunds i got already. so i paid like 1 dollar a movie. WTF

:frowning: I’m still angry I didn’t know about DVDSAVE5

^shit i thought u would know about that. i would have mentioned it sooner if i knew too.

Well, I convinced them to add it to one of my orders… but that would’ve been sweet to have it on all 5 orders.

I just started getting interested in Blu-Ray since I recently got a tv capable of playing them. But just a couple of questions.

Is the PS3 a good blu-ray player? I read in the first or second post that it was the best, but don’t have a PS3 so I’m wondering if I should invest in one.

Also, is the quality between Blu-ray and HD DVD’s considerably noticeable?

Thanks.

Much better than what the PS2 did with DVDs.

I finished watching Hell Boy, Tekkonkinkreet, and Goodfellas today. Goodfellas conversion was kinda shaky. There was still a lot of film grain still hanging around in the film. Not too bad, but Lethal Weapon’s(comparing old films here) conversion was much better compared to Goodfellas.

Tomorrow I’ll probably watch Reservoir Dogs or Casino Royale.

Ok cool. What about Blu-Ray vs. HD DVD?

The PS3 is a good Blu-ray player. I wouldn’t say the best, cause it can’t play DTS-HDMA tracks… but the likeliness of you having a system that can play DTS-HDMA is unlikely. For 400 dollars, you’ll be getting a lot more than a Blu-ray player though… and I would indeed say it’s an investment you won’t regret. Every 360 owner friend of mine has switched over to the PS3 now except for one, one big reason being that we can share our PSN downloads. Anyway, this is about the Blu-ray capabilities and not the gaming… To answer your question, I definitely think you should invest in a PS3, but it’s not a top of the line Blu-ray player… but the thing that keeps it from being top class is insignificant, really, unless you own or plan to own a DTS-HDMA 7.1 sound system.

Between BD & HD-DVD, the quality difference is most noticeable in sound. Because of Blu-ray’s higher capacity disk space, we can fit in Uncompressed PCM audio. As for video, I know that Blu-ray has a high streaming rate, not too sure how HD-DVD compares in streaming rate of the video… The biggest difference, of course, is studio support. With Universal/NBC not bound by contract to HD-DVD, we may be seeing them switch over as well this year… leaving Paramount as the only major studio supporting HD-DVD.

Ahhh ok I see. Thanks epp1e. Which PS3 version should I get? I’m also asking this in the PS3 thread but need as many opinions as I can get lol.

What do you mean when you said “we can share our PSN downloads”? Like you can download old school PS2 games, then I can cop yours or something?

If you have some PS2 games you want to play on your PS3, you should get the 80 or 60GB. If not, go for the 40GB. You can check for the games you want to play work on either the 80 or 60 at this URL: http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/CompatibleStatus

PSN sells original PS1 games & also some new games through the PSN like XBLA does. With every game currently on the PSN (except for Warhawk), you can share your games with up to 4 of your friends. This won’t be patched out because Sony intended it for it to be this way. This means if one of your friends who owns a PS3 has Tekken 5, Super Puzzle Fighter, or any of the other games from the PSN… he can share them with you so you don’t have to buy it as well.

Anywho, I’m going to watch a movie right now. Keep asking questions and I’ll be back to answer them later… or someone else probably will before me.

Damn thats an awesome feature. So by “share” you mean I can basically just download it from you or something and now I have it on my hard drive forever?

Tru, I’ll see if I can find a 60GB PS3. Damn this is an expensive hobby lol.

Comparable in features or not (I say BD is better, but not everyone agrees), now is definitely NOT the time to buy into HD DVD. It’s going to be a dead format really soon.

HDD reviewed 3:10 to Yuma today. Got good ratings.

Usually cheapest to get Blu-ray from Amazon.com

Truth. HD-DVD is gettting Betamax’d, for real. Sony handled their shit this go.

K, so now I’m choosing my movie for the Sony B2G1 mail-in offer.

Here are the ones I don’t have from the list:
Perfect Stranger
Resident Evil: Extinction
Ghost Rider
Dragon Wars

Which do you think I should get? Or should I get one of the other ones on the list and just sell it?
Superbad
Casino Royale
Surf’s Up
Reign Over Me
The Lives of Others

I’m leaning toward RE:Extinction or Ghost Rider. Just wondering, since it is the 3rd movie in the trilogy, are you missing out on important shit if you haven’t seen the first two? Or would I be fine just watching #3 on its own? Also, is Ghost Rider as bad as people say it is? I may just get one of the ones I already have then…

I’ll put it like this: Walmart refused to accept my unopened GhostRider return.

Get Casino Royale.

Best buy will actually let you exchange one item without a receipt per year. I would get the one that cost the most which i think is reign over me. Lives of Others wouldn’t be at best buy at all since i never seen one there.

i would go that route and pick a movie you’d actually like.

i just picked up lives of others at bes tbuy today with the $20 off coupon

i read you can just return the other two and keep the one with the $20 off on it, so gonna try it and get yuma for $9.99

if not i’ll just keep it
