I knew I forgot something when I left home from work this morning…I forgot my copy of SSF4. Well if anyone’s there early (2’ish) I’ll be there too catching up on whatever games they have.
gg’s to everyone there. Got me monies at the last minute and took the part. Didn’t know that Berkeley’s was Downtown Berkeley bart, good job me =[
Ah, damn, should’ve made that clearer (and I will in the opening post); sorry about that.
IN ANY EVENT, good stuff man; Zangief is a beast (I forgot the win streak, but I think it got up to around 47; lawlz).
Need to learn that AND the Honda matchup (thanks for the heads up on the ROLLING THUNDER punish for the head butt, Kontra), so I hope to see you and Kontradiction down here in Berkeley some time!
======
Some stuff… uh… for now, I’m still a little concerned about my MVC2 stick; I should’ve let more people check it, but the thing got relegated to BLAZBLUE duty and I forgot about the issue…
I REALLY hope it’s just me (this wasn’t an issue when I was play-testing it prior), but the thing felt like it was getting stuck in a direction and wasn’t going back to neutral as quickly as it should be (I wasn’t having the same problem with the ROUND 1 fight stick); like, if you walk to the RIGHT, I let go of the stick and it felt like I wasn’t stopping as soon as I let go of the stick.
Worst case scenario is that I have to replace the stick; FML.
Also, I finally stopped dropping a lot of my combos towards the end of the night; jab-jab roundhouse got easier to land and, by the end, I was even landing the tricky jab-short roundhouse combo (which I was hoping to bring out a lot more today, but nothing was going right)… cannot miss those Dudley combos as you don’t get a lot of openings to do them in…
ALSO, I WILL NOT GIVE UP ON MAKOTO… I just need to learn actual links, as I’ve already forgotten them.
But, yes, Ryu fireball is painful.
====================
THAT SAID, the biggest thing going on next week is that I’m going to have my copy of BLAZBLUE: CONTINUUM SHIFT and we will start doing that.
This week was our biggest meet (I think we had like 15+ people or something) and I’d like to thank everyone for making the trip down to Eudemonia and KEEPING IT CLASSY with us.
Okay, I’m gonna go play Miles Edgeworth now, but I am in anticipation of Funkie Space Monkey’s epic videos of me running around the shop.
ALSO ALSO… uh…
REMEMBER, people are encouraged to bring HARD DRIVES, GAMES AND STICKS; bring whatever ya’ll can.
ANYWAY PEACE.
Wow what a night, some epic games everyone!
Props to Drabog’s win-streak (41w)! Hope his performance inspires everyone to play more and study up on their 'Gief matchups. Also shoutouts to snakexeyez going to the Lodi tourney, and getting all his practice in with us tonight.
Back to the lab for me.
Damn, I watched that Street Fighter X Namco trailer and it looked pretty neat…
ALSO, I get to play 3rd Strike; yay.
We’ve been talking about this.
UPDATE:
Despite saying that I would engage in some epic MILES EDGEWORTH ACTION a while ago, I ended up hitting training mode in SUPER and double-checked my MVC2 stick: everything is A-OKAY.
I don’t know what was up with it earlier at EU, but the thing doesn’t seem to be sticking here at home, which is a relief; maybe it was sticking a while ago because I screwed up and touched the joy-stick while plugging it in (kinda like holding down the analog on your X-Box controller while turning it on), but I’m relieved that the thing ain’t busted; YES WE CAN COMMENCE EPIC GAMING.
ALSO, I’m hitting those Dudley links in training, at least…
Ffffffffff–
ALSO ALSO, I think we need to append SPEAKERS as one of the items that needs to be brought; Funkie Space Monkey has the ones that use BATTERIES, which is preferred since we’re not actually allowed to use EU’s electrical outlets; I think his use “C” batteries, and I’ll maybe try hooking you up with those on my next trip to COSTCO or something.
(as is, only 2 X-Box stations actually have speakers… other 2 is like SUPER SILENT FIGHTER 4; I think I’m somewhat reliant on sounds for confirming links, so playing without it is definitely weird)
ALSO, this:

ALSO ALSO ALSO, I need to inform Dean that we are now starting these meets at 3PM…
That said, I felt kinda assholish that we monopolized all the X-Boxes today, but oh well; hur hur hur.
Yes, come back and PWN us Drabog (and also Kontradiction; HONDA MATCH IS SO HARD) and good luck to Snake!
(PS. remember to pimp our weekly casual event guyz :awesome.gif:)
EDIT: I demand that awesome.gif be a viable smiley, as it is the one smiley that is truly worth having:
What else stuffs blanka’s electricity for cammy? its always been one of those mystery moves i never had a proper answer to
I hope Drabog comes back next week I love playing the Geif matchup, and good luck to Snake let us know how you did.
thanks to the folks that me lend their sticks (every stick does have their own feel to it). i would bring mines to the table but its for the PS. any suggestions on where to getit modded?
HE’S A BEAST.
I’m pretty sure Tao has an answer for this.
THAT SAID, Tao, can you explain Option Selects and safe jumps again?
SPECIFICALLY, I’m wondering if I can do this on Zangief’s anti-air lariat (I didn’t even know there was a way to beat out wakeup Messiah Kick with Ex DP):

Yes, we are working on this right now (and apparently, there is a way to set up to see whether or not OS works: have the computer do it and you play the character who does reaction block or move or whatever).
Options for stuffing wakeup lighting:
-c.mp- nice because you get counter hit setups
-c.lp - you can chain this into links. i.e. c.lp, c.lp, lp, hk sa
-tkcs - instant dive kick has to hit deep. hard to time because of blanka’s stoopid hitbox, but allows you to punish with a heavy combo
Note that once you stuff it consistently, blanka has other reversal options like ex up ball and ex rainbow ball. Be ready for those…
I’ve been interested in this as well, since I prefer my HRAP over my TE. I looked on craigslist awhile back and saw that a guy in Salinas dual mods sticks. Don’t know of the quality of his work, but it might be worth getting in touch with him and see if you can mail your stick in ($80).
The SRK trading outlet has plenty of modders lurking around. Maybe post there and see if there’s a reliable guy in the bay area.
Nice vid, I’ve been experimenting with finding the best way to test Option Selects.
Option Selects is a fairly broad term about handling two or more situations with simple input tricks. What’re you’re hopefully doing is letting the game decide the ‘best’ action to take.

Regarding safe jumps, here’s an awesome video that explains it real well. It’s for ST, but concept is directly related to ssf4 play

Safe jumps and option selects go hand in hand. It’s kinda hard to explain since it’s very dependent on the character you play, the matchup, and your opponents habits. But hope it helps
Thank you tao, and thank you everyone for having me there. All I can say for to get better, is stick with you main and Practice, Practice, Practice. That’s how my gief turned out in vanilla sf4 at mgl. Got my ass whooped, but was determine to learn and keep playing.
We should thank you for coming down, really; your Zangief was really educational (that said, I just realized something: are you doing the SPD throw thingies in a way where you don’t jump (you’re concealing the jump part of the SPD in a buffer on jab or something)? I noticed how we were both crouched a bunch of times and you managed to grab me during my attempts at poking; shit was amazing).
EDIT: Oh, no, wait, you can do SPD without jumping; I think what I was hearing about was ULTRA without jumping…
Yeah, this is precisely why I have a lot of sticks: so people have stuff to use.
I’m hoping to get more sticks in the future, maybe.
That said, yes, naturally, I’d imagine that people would be a lot more comfortable with their own sticks; hopefully, the shop will sort out issues with people bringing their own setups (XBoxes, PS3s) after the DUSTLOOP tournament thing goes through… I have my fingers crossed; there’s like one monitor in the X-Box area that doesn’t actually have an X-Box attached to it, so it’s like: why don’t they just rent the MONITOR to us?
That… is incredibly useful; the thing with the jump in on Guile was ridiculous…
Anyway, yes, I will be trying some of this stuff out, but OPTIONS SELECT is still a little weird…
I think it’s mainly because no one is totally clear on how you’re suppose to EXECUTE them…
But, yes, the videos posted should help me get started; thanks Tao!
Yes you can do a spd without jumping because of easy inputs in this game. you don’t have to input the up motion, you can just do :hcb::ub::p: and it will come out, The walking 720, you can buffer the :u: input and walk forward a bit. then do a 360 the other way and 3ppp.
Hmmm wasnt aware that tkcs was an option since wakeup lightning tends to stop jump in attempts. As far as his ball options go, i know u1 and SA can punish blanka ball on block but does that apply for blocked up and rainbow ball as well?
Good games yesterday everyone. Drabog’s Zangief was pretty amazing, too bad i didn’t get to play that much, it pretty much overewhelmed me the only match I got to play against him.
I was surprised to see two Cammy players at the meet, I thought those were pretty rare. Hope to learn a lot from you guys.
Looking forward to next week.
Woah… I never knew any of that; it’s nice to see it demystified.
Thanks for the explanation; I’m not a Gief user, but it’ll probably help to know how it’s done.
Cool, it was nice having you around (you were the guy with the brother? Sorry if I don’t remember names… that’ll take me a while).
I look forward to having you around next week.
That said, I’m still impressed at the character variety we are getting… this is good stuff.
==============
THAT SAID, GUYS, option select is EPIC; I was trying it out earlier and when I finally got the safe jump-in recorded correctly, it was like one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen.
I was apparently correct in my guess that Zangief’s crouching lariat can be stuffed on wakeup (or, to the very least, I couldn’t get it to come out on my dummy Dudley no matter how hard I tried), and what’s nice about doing the option select is that, depending on various situations, my Dudley would do stuff (the scenarios described are when I do jump-in HK and then “option select” Ex Jet-upper):
-If Zangief back-dashes, Ex Jet-upper comes out
I don’t know if I’m doing it wrong, but I’m under the impression that if it’s spaced correctly, I should be connecting Jet-upper as Zangief back-dashes… I need to investigate this more, but what’s nice about what’s going on in this situation is that this will SURELY connect if Zangief attempts to back-dash in the corner
-If Zangief blocks high, my jump-in HK connects
If my jump-in is blocked, I can land safely and do a combo (even if it’s blocked, at least I’m safe)
-If Zangief does wake up green hand, Ex Jet-upper comes out
What’s nice about this is that I’m invincible long enough to get through green hand without being hit, but I’m not sure if I can be punished on my way down
-If Zangief does wake up lariat, he gets hit
===========
What’s most confusing initially about option select is EXECUTION… it was explained in several places, but it was still hard to understand…
So, apparently, what I did was execute a “safe jump-in”
(which is accomplished by weird timing… essentially, you can jump in on some characters and do an attack, but you’re close enough to the ground when you execute your attack to block the opponent’s wake-up attack… that’s apparently what a safe-jump is: if the opponent doesn’t do anything, your attack hits… if they do a wake-up attack, you block the attack)
And during the part where my “safe jump-in” is executed, I quickly enter another move (shoryuken)… that move (shoryuken) is “option selected” and the Zangief scenario I laid out above is what happens…
The only problem I have with option select so far is that I currently cannot devise a way to PRACTICE it (it has some pretty tricky timing and execution)… it’s usually just me programming a CPU dummy to do it, then I use my opponent’s character (in this case: Zangief) to see whether or not I programmed it successfully (and I’m currently under the impression that I might be doing it wrong since my ex Jet-upper is whiffing)…
ANYAWY, yes, that is all for now…
I really need to get some studying done…
EDIT:
ONE LAST THING: I can do a safe jump-in and “option select” an ULTRA COMBO (or at least I think I can)…
So, what’s happening is that it’s just like the above thing I described, but with an ULTRA COMBO being buffered instead of a shoryuken…
I haven’t tried it yet, but it seems like something what would be really useful (I’m pretty sure Ex green hand will be defeated by CORKSCREW CROSS).
Okay, here’s a progress report (AKA me not studying):
-Jump-in HK and Option Select CORKSCREW CROSS works
It’s really hilarious.
As Zangief, this is what happens on wakeup:
-Ex-Green Hand
Ultra 2 connects
-Dash back
Ultra 2 connects
-Block
Heavy Kick connects
=========
That being said, much to my disappointment, there isn’t actually a way for Dudley to jump in safely on Zangief on wakeup: despite not being able to get a reversal with KKK lariat, the startup on PPP lariat is apparently a lot faster and it’s ridiculously easy to get a reversal with it consistently (along with a free ex-green hand if it trades)…
The only thing Dudley can do is EMPTY JUMP IN AND BLOCK, but then then if Gief doesn’t opt for wakeup lariat and does wakeup ex greenhand, it’s a free command throw (it may be possible to jump after green hand is blocked, but I’m not sure since I can’t set things up correctly to check).
Well, so much for that plan…
I guess we can’t jump in on Zangief after all :profoundsadness:
I better start memorizing the appropriate punishes outlined in the DUDLEY forum…
But, yes, OPTION SELECT is amazing and I actually do suggest that people learn the jump-in on wakeup stuff since, while not useful for Gief, it might work with other chraracters… maybe…
You can punish up ball with those options if you block it standing. Crouching, it’ll pass over your head, and you’ll end up having to chase him down.
EX Rainbow ball… well I’m kinda stumped on how to deal with that one. It’s possible to stuff it before he takes off though (after his backstep)
I lost like a billion PP online , so I went to the lab to practice execution and also to mess around with safe jumps.
After picking two cammy’s and messing around. I’m finding that it’s not very possible to safe jump reversals that can come out in 5 frames or less. To put that in perspective:
Boxer’s headbutt - 8-12 frames, very easy to jump in
Rufus’ ex jebus kick - 11 frames, also easy
Viper’s up knuckle - 7 frames, tricky but doable
Cammy’s cannon spike - 5 frames, really hard, maybe impossible (yay)
PPP Lariat, Jet Upper - 4 frames, not happening
SHORYUKEN!!! - 3 frames, forget about it :nono:
I think I now know why Daigo uses Ryu:
I was messing around with safe Jumping Heavy kick OPTION SELECT EX shoryuken and using it on GUILE and here are the results:
-Block
Heavy kick connects to Guile and Ryu can start a block string
-Back-dash
Guile gets hit with ex shoryuken
-Flash Kick
Guile gets hit with ex shoryuken from behind
-EX Flash Kick
Guile gets hit with ex shoryuken from behind
EDIT:
I must’ve been doing something wrong a while ago, but I now cannot reproduce the scenarios with FLASH KICK… yeah, you cannot safe jump FLASH KICK, which is really strange since I was doing it a while ago…
-Ex/non-ex Sonic Boom
Guile gets hit with heavy kick
-Sonic Hurricane
Gets hit with 2-hit close range heavy kick (WHAT THE FUCK??!?!??!?!??!?!?!?!)
Yes… Guile is free for jump-ins if you use Ryu (unless Guile has super; that’s the only thing I could get to hit… but Ryu is only tapped once; FML)…
God damn it… I can’t get the same results with Dudley.
Am currently testing option select on ZANGIEF, but I think lariat will still hit Ryu out of the air since it comes out to fast (in fact, most EX dp moves will screw up safe jump-ins).
EDIT:
Yes, Ryu cannot safe jump-in on Zangief on wakeup since PPP Lariat is GODLIKE.
I… actually understood all that; WE’RE TAKING IT TO THE LAB!!!
