you’ve never read anything with darkseid involved? shit! if you like thanos at all, you will fucking love darkseid.
Yeah, Thanos and Darkseid comparisons. Thanos I liked in Annihilation so I’ll pick this up along with more Ra’s stuff and the new Countdown, oddly.
Batgirl and Spoiler are back! Someone must have shot Didio.
So I was going through my shelf and I started rereading Broken City. I don’t remember if anyone mentioned it in this thread yet, but that’s seriously one of the best Batman stories ever. If I had T-Mobile, Broken City would definitely be in my Fave Five.
That story just has everything. A great conceit, a well-thought out plot that has Batman use a good mix of detective skills and martial arts, hardboiled dialogue, and amazing art. Azzarello and Risso basically created a spiritual successor to Year One. Broken City is one of the most hardcore Batman comics around.
There’s this scene in the first chapter where Batman’s literally beating the teeth out of Killer Croc, who is tied up and hanging upside down. It’s savage and borderline torture - but when you read it, you just go, “THANK you for GETTING Batman!”
Broken City sounds cool, what’s the main plot and villain involved?
Broken City revolves around Batman trying to solve a double murder that leaves a young boy orphaned. Some of the Batman villains that appear in the story are Killer Croc, the Penguin, Scarface and the Ventriloquist, and the Joker. There’s a nice psychological twist ending, but it’s something that should be read, not spoiled. Look for the TRADE, BABY.
Since we talking about bats i thought his would be appropriate:
http://comics.ign.com/articles/624/624619p1.html
Favorite bats artist is jim lee and the guy who drew red rain<3
Batsbooks are among my favorite comics ever it’s really hard for me to choose.
YO: perfectly told origin of bats and i loved the comparison between bruce n gordon though the art wasn’t great.
LH: just a phenominal thriller in every sense of the word it’s perfect.
DV: sequel to LH wasn’t nearly as good as LH but still a very good n worthwhile read.
DKR: “this isn’t a mudhole…it’s an operating table. And i’m the surgeon”
arkham asylum: not the best but a solid story and great tim schaeffer-esque artstyle.
hush: DS will neg me for this but IMO it was toptier gold a very well thought out n well told story that included everyone from the rogue gallery without making it look like they were put in there for the hell of it. It also has the best art of any bats book and bats kicks supes’s ass…sorta:wonder:
a death in the family: Jason todd dies with a great splash page and a worthwhile bats vs supes bout nuf said:rofl:
gothic: SEVERELY underrated i liked it cuz it was so weird and un-batman like, seeing bats go up against a supernatual foe and havng the devil make an appearance was hella cool:cool:
Overall i think hush is my favorite batsbook simply cuz it made sooo many story arc changes and there were so many awesome WTF moments. Although it doesn’t have the lasting appeal as other stories like YO or DKR i will always remember the first time i read hush as the greatest comic book reading experience i ever had. LH is a very close second cuz it had such a a toptier mystery “whodunnit” story, DKR and YO are tied for third.
Nice, I want to read the War Games as well, I need some Ventriloquist and Black Mask in my life, plus Spoiler dieing (Until recently I suppose) is a good laugh.
I think War Games is mediocre, even by crossover/big event standards. War Crimes was completely just filthy bullshit and it’s seriously so bad that I think even Willingham apologized for writing it. (It was an editorially mandated story.)
If you want to read about why Black Mask is a true badass, skip War Games. Read Brubaker’s Catwoman instead. He’s the writer who boosted Black Mask’s street cred as a Batvillain. Black Mask performs some twisted torture - there’s this one scene where he yanks out a guy’s eyeball and makes him swallow it… while the guy’s WIFE is tied up and forced to watch.
I was looking up information on Black Mask and came across the Bru Catwoman stuff, shit looks good.
Dude, that’s pretty cool lol. I’ll look for some TPB’s or some comics on it. Is this the arc where he “dies”? I use that because no one technically dies, and Black Mask coming back would be interesting to say the least.
Don’t wanna spoil anything for you because it’s the Bru. You just gotta read it, homey! The first Bru Catwoman TPB is called The Dark End of the Street. There are four Bru Catwoman TPBs in all.
But I will say that the Will Pffeifer run is weak… It’s got nice art but the stories ain’t up to par.
I get paid tomorrow so I’ll check around the local shops for them. Catwoman personally never interested me before, but her new look is appealing.
Finished reading Gotham Knights last night, ending was pretty cool, I loved how Bats finally played Hush like that, which makes see Hush as a complete hypocrite by the end of the last issue. I loved also how Joker shot the robin amongst the pigeons and then says: “I-hate-Robins.” XD
BTW do i TAke it that one of Joker’s abilities now is to communicate with birds or something?
Joker can usually do anything he wants. If Joker thinks he has heat vision, you better bet he has some way of replecating heat vision.
So any bat news as of late? Between the holiday rush and the depression that comes with it I haven’t been able to visit the bat universe for a while.
All of the Bat books have been tied up with Ra’s Ressurection, it was pretty good as far as multi-crossovers go. :lovin: Anyway, Ra’s is back, my favorite Bat villain! Talia and Damian are still on the run. That’s about the gist of it without ruining too much stuff.
Since I was apparently name-dropped in this thread, I will have to go out with a bang: Hush sucked. It was Jim Lee drawing pics for charity. Some kid at the Make a Wish Foundation finally had his dream come true and that was the end result. Jeph Loeb just had to draw some words(you really think he wrote that shit?). I mean, he’s not the greatest writer in the world, but shit, Long Halloween and Dark Victory. That’s all that has to be said about him.
But yes, I hate that story with a passion. The fact that Jason Todd’s return gave way to that Superboy Prime retcon punch bullshit, just makes me angry. Oh, and if you didn’t know Jason Todd was back, too bad. Shit done got spoiled.
And I’ll agree with Zephy: Broken City was that damn good. Batman went around breaking dudes bones for information. The way it should be done.
Damn straight it was, and I liked it for that. Honestly speaking.
That said, is there any other Batman work that is as accessible (I’m not sure if I’m describing it right here) as the Killing Joke? Art was good, and I thought the story was really well done. I’ve got Year One in my sights, anything else?
Hush was ok, I love the development of the characters though
Jeph Lobe really got me interested in Nightwing, Oracle. And besides Year One I like Lobe’s writing the most for Batman
"Deep down inside Clark is a nice person’
“And I am not”
Something like that…too cool
Thanks Sano, I might have to look more into Ra’s stuff. I heard of it and read a few reviews but haven’t read it. Anything life shattering for the bat? I was hoping a death or old enemy/pal return, other than Ra’s himself.
Same here. I own the entire run because Jim Lee just drew the shit out of that book. Every page was filled with stuff. And it’s Jim Lee drawing Batman. BATMAN! You know how long we were waiting for that?
Jeph Loeb wrote THAT same character development a billion times in Superman/Batman. It was nothing fresh. I would have preferred Batman vs. some terrorists or something. It was basically a Scooby Doo movie and all of the Rogues Gallery were the guest stars.
