The Basics Thread - Primer on YouTube!

  1. Can someone explain how the damage scaling in this game works. I see that it begins on the 2nd hit in a combo, but how does the damage decrease beyond that?
Does it decrease damage with each hit like in many other games, or does it decrease by some amount after a set amount of hits/moves (like in SFIV)?

  2. Can someone explain to me how hitstun scaling works? Does it begin with the 2nd hit in a combo like normal damage scaling?

Quick question,I saw someone swap to their partner in a video and when they did there was a orange glow around them for a second. What is this?

It’s a variable counter, I think you press 6P when in blockstun to do it.

Thanks,I went through Keits primer again and saw it again. So basically it’s a safe way to swap characters in/out?

It’s one of the safe ways. You can also do a crossover air raid, or you can do a delayed hyper combo.

Hey all,

I’m pretty new here and to the fighting game genre. Here is my quick question : after a 3+C launcher, if I want to follow by an air combo, should I just jump or jump forward ? Same question for the second jump.

On one hand, sometimes it seems that just jump makes me miss my opponent but I cant determine wether it is because of him being too far away or of me timing my attacks badly. On the other hand, jump forward sometimes makes me go to the other side of my opponent. Still cant determine the cause of this : bad attacks timing or bad jump choice.

May anyone help me figure this out ?

EDIT : sorry double post.

uhm, it’s really depedant on the character that you’re using and the character on the receiving end of the combo…

just try to jump up/forward and hit your attacks as soon as you can on the way up

Huum, so you say there is no prefered technique between just straight or forward. Fine.

Maybe the “as soon as you can” is the part that I miss. I always wait a little time to actually see my character on screen before I attack. Does not sound like a good idea now.

Once again, even that depends on your character. but for most characters you can get away with doing j.5AA j.5BB as soon as you lift off.

I believe choosing weather to jump up or forward is a mix between the distance from your opponent when you hit with your launcher (too close and you’ll go to the other side if you go forwards, too far and some characters aren’t able to follow up unless they jump forwards) and if you want to carry the oppont horizontaly a bit to take them to the corner or something. (In which case jumping forward helps)

Thanks for the help. I can do it pretty consistently with Polimar (and even combo into 360 grab in the air !) and Chun-li who is able to actually triple jump : 3+C j.BB j.BB j.CC is quite nice damage !

I couldn’t find this answered before and I don’t think it deserves too much of a new topic. But after going round after round of dealing with major blockstrings and finding that Advance Guard would only get me so far. I realized I could just throw right out of block.

Is there a way to follow up from throws or do I just have to play a wakeup game?

EDIT: By which I mean can I OTG or megacrash into a combo or something?

it really depends on the character that you’re using and what throw you used (because that determines the distance between you and the opp)

anyway, off the top of my head, you can do Soki’s 22C move after a back throw (OTGs) although I think it whiffs on some of the shorter characters (need to test this). And Karas gets his lvl 3 super (OTG) off of most of his throws.
I don’t think the game allows you to mega crush while you are throwing someone.

OP has been updated with Player Icon information.

Hope it helps.

I know this is a noob question, but I can’t find it anywhere. How do you change colors in the game? As in costumes on the char select screen. I notice that sometimes I do, but it’s not something I know I’m doing. I’m just asking the button input.

Depending on what button you use to select your character, you will choose a different color. Assuming you have purchased all of your character’s colors from the shop section, (GC controller) A, B, Y, and X will all chose a specific one of your character’s colors, Y selecting your default, A selecting secondary, and I don’t recall the rest. I suppose that would be 2, B, 1, and A (1 selects primary, 2 selects secondary) on a classic controller if you follow the pattern I put for the GC controller.

ah! cool, i’ll check that out. Thanks Killtz.

Okay, I’m having problems with the Advance Guard, I hit ABC while blocking but all my character does is dash. What am I doing wrong?
