u guys have to watch round 3
so I uploaded a bunch of replays, sorry for the horrible quality but I don’t have capture equipment(can anyone recommend some that’s cheap?). But please watch them and tell me what I need to work on. I have several ideas already but would really appreciate the criticism.

You need to work on standing your ground a bit. It’s one thing to take a few steps backwards to get spacing to zone, but you’re doing it to the point that you’re almost getting cornered in the first 10 seconds of a lot of these rounds. Walk your few steps back and throw your fireball…if they keep coming, stand your ground and keep them out with c.mk and c.mp. Ryu is one of the most defensive characters in the game. Don’t get scared when they get close, you have all the tools you need to push them out again. When I play, I only zone in the beginning of the match or when positions are reset. The idea is just to not let them get in on you for free…you’re not going to keep them out forever.
Also, take advantage of your knockdowns. I saw a few times where you’d land a sweep, and then walk backwards. That’s the last thing you want to do after you knock someone down. Getting them on their back is your cue to move forward and pressure them. Everytime you score a knockdown, you need to put some kind of pressure on them. If you just let them get up, instead of thinking about what you’ll do to them, they’re thinking of how to mount an offense on you. I think you might be worried about reversals, but you can just bait them if you think that is what they will do. Get close and shimmy back and forth and then block or whiff a c.mp early, and then block. Even if they don’t do anything, you’ve prolonged the pressure and you’re in a good position to do damage. As much of a zoning character Ryu is, he still has to be up in someones grill to do damage.
This is an old video, and not a great match or anything. Just me getting my ass beat by a friend in vanilla sf4. Pay attention only to what happens when one of us gets knocked down. Everytime there’s a knockdown, there’s a jumpin or some kind of ground pressure or baiting.
That seems to me to be one of your biggest issues. Most of the other things I saw, were due to lack of matchup knowledge. Like not knowing the best punish(throwing guile to punish flash kick…you can actually hit him with solar plexus strike). Oh, one other thing. You were trying some safe jumps, which is good. That pressure I was talking about, but they weren’t anywhere near close to safe. If you make contact with the top of their head, it’s not a safe jump. It should hit very deep…around the waist area. You’re just jumping to late. After a sweep, hold up forward and it’s a perfect safe jump. After a throw is kind of difficult, but just do your best to get it to hit them in the waist and you’ll be pretty safe.
started to use ryu already a week and all i can say is that im ashamed for not using him from the beginning. so many options, so much damage IM in there.
lol what’s wrong with sim? and why Ryu? why not Yun/Yang etc?
I’ll still body you

Nice vidz there Luken and your Ryu is still frosty.
I left some comments on Youtube, saw that standing strong cancelled into a fireball against Tekniqs.
Cool reset at the end of that match with Akuma. He seemed a little scrubby -if I can call somebody else a scrub - so I thought you were gonna test out the cl.Hk link into special at one point.
Thanks, I’ve been working on my Ryu a lot lately. I was trying out cl.HK on the computer, on Abel I did cl.HK in to c.st and c.fp they are very nice links. I wasn’t really applying the new Ryu stuff to his game yet, but when it comes out on console, expect a huge change in my Ryu.
eh… I was gonna comment on spacing but then realised its AE and youre probs not used to it yet so I shant comment.
Go ahead and comment on my spacing. Arcade Edition Ryu feals the same as SSF4’s Ryu.
this is a stupid question but youre player 1 right…? just that I presume you are but if so youre being less consistant with SRKs than I would expect of you (cause youre normally very good at AAing).
The Ryu forums doesn’t seem to have many tourney players on it, but if theres any tournament people here that could give me some pointers like Luken I would appreciate it. I have some matches here from a session with Dr. Chaos that could use some critiques.

Yes, I am player one. Tekniqs is a great player and he adapts well. I played him earlier so he remembered my fireball pattern and was able to jump over them. There were also a couple of time where I just messed up the motion.
I watched both of them and added you on Xbox Live. I think you have a solid Ryu. Something you could improve on is your spacing because not until the last fight vs Akuma did you space yourself outside of his sweep range and punish it with your own. He was sweeping the entire set. Also, more consistency with the Anti Air’s will help your game. One last thing to improve on is your fireball zoning, you could’ve thrown a lot more, but I understand there are certain situations where you can’t. I like the fact that you were focusing the sweeps and you have a great amount of patience.
excellent. the connection probably wont be too great but still I feel I could learn alot from playing you. I’ll try and catch you online either tomorrow or friday.
