Well, it was originally baked in to the Constitution to increase the political clout of the slavery states. There is something called the 3/5ths clause in the Constitution that says slaves are worth 3/5ths of a free man when tallying a state’s population for Electoral voters and members of the House of Representatives.

Now, you can argue that the Electoral College still serves a useful purpose even without slavery states being a thing anymore. But it has certainly outlasted its original purpose in that one specific sense anyway.

That’s a pretty loose connection at best. Especially since the article itself says

When you read through the Federalist Papers and other supporting documents you can find multiple arguments against direct votes which seemed to indicate that even if slavery wasn’t an issue they would have still probably gone with a system where the president was selected via indirect means.

It’s far from sufficient evidence to say it was slavery that directly lead to the formation of the EC.

I have been freely stating that there are additional reasons which favor the EC, but if slavery wasn’t a major factor in the implementation of the EC, what need was there to simultaneously codify the 3/5ths compromise in the Constitution?

Fun Fact: for a short minute I joined a protest group. There were some good peeps in it and a professor I wanted to help. Basically gonna be a big ol march denouncing the mexican government over the violence in Juarez. We had a 20 minute long discussion about the color t-shirt we should have. Gave them one last shot. They broke down into committees. One of them was a committee for symbols.
