'96, '97, '98 had a “Feel” to them art, gameplay and presentation wise take that “Game Engine” and combine it with XI’s moveslists but leave out all the random combos.
Follow Me?, I wanted a Slower CvS2/Old School KoF paced Fighter but I wanted all the moves and characters from XI.
The lame thing for me (being a Ryo fan) is that he’s gonna look retarded for years now, since we know SNK is going to keep using these sprites for a long ass time.
Um, why? Game mechanics may be the most vital component, but by no means the only one of importance. If they were the be all, end all of fighting games, we would probably play Virtua Fighter and one single 2-D game exclusively (or some real-time strategy game, or even chess).
Since we have access to several solid KOF titles that, in essence, play in a fairly similar manner, the aesthetics and character selection do matter, even more so than in the case of, say, SFIV.
Still, as for someone’s implied question: No, Ralf’s stature, et. al. is not what chiefly has me worried about this game. I am far more bothered by these factors:
approximately 95% of my preferred characters have been dropped
the movelists have reverted to 1995 standards
the SDMs are gone…
…along with the Leader/Tag/Quick Shift system (which IMO was near perfected in XI - adjusted stun damage was arguably called for, though)
the choppy-looking clash feature (nullifying projectiles, offsetting anti-airs and even stopping DMs with normal attacks? having the characters leap back unless someone attacks afterwards?)
Of course, it does not exactly help that I detest most of the special effects (which look like cut-and-paste affairs and remind me of CvS), that I find the backgrounds somewhat off (though 2002 UM’s are the best since 2000, at the very least!) and that, yes, I hate most of the sprites and their mutual proportions.
I regret coming off as a pessimist (if you don’t have anything good to say, and all that), but this “fanboy” felt the need to set things straight. To me, every aspect of a game is important, and if you cannot/do not appreciate this part or another, it is your loss.
the problem I see with ralf is that they have made it slower over the years after kof 98 and with this new sprite it looks like it will be even more slower
There is absolutely nothing wrong with the character proportions. This is the first time that SNK has actually exaggerated their character proportions in a way that’s appealing and different from the norm. The way they’ve handle proportion before was boring.
Visually, the main issues are the portrait art/character select screen and the HUD. They’re entirely run of the mill in comparison to everything else, which is mostly exaggerated. The other issue is the poor use of what is otherwise good animation. Characters hit the ground awkwardly when knocked down, the tracks they move along during certain special attacks look strange, and even their stopping animation after running isn’t used effectively. It feels like they’re taking frames drawn by the best and brightest in the industry and giving them to total newb game designers to work with.
Regardless, the game is still really early, hopefully they will work some of these issues out. People should probably be more worried about the system problems, which SNK has always had a problem tackling even after extensive beta testing.
…Except that he has the same frame count on his moves and so far isn’t any slower than he normally is. He certainly doesn’t move any slower than Raiden or anything.
It’s a moot point wether or not you see a resemblance in the zooming feature that’s being used as well as the sprite similarities, in the end of the day AoF 1 and AoF 3 weren’t good games for a lot of other reasons that had nothing to do with zooming or sprite style. It’s purely aesthetic so I fail to see any substantial reasoning in this so called gripe.
Sweeps knock down FAST. Maybe even faster than in SF4…which is really fast.
I wonder if you can tech roll that…
I’m surprised no one has justified Ralf’s size by reminding us how he can survive nukes. I’ll check the previous pages…someone has to have said it by now…
Man, I’m feeling a lot of you guys on a lot of different issues. I, personally, really enjoy the new style of the game. I can appreciate the concern of those who are troubled by the straying from proportional accuracy, but I think it’s one of those things where once the game is in your hands and you get to witness it first-hand your concerns will diminish. This truly is the first time that SNK has not only completely redrawn their sprites entirely, but also been the fighting game developer to set a standard in quality. I agree: some of the sprites were a startling “jump” from one size to another. However, I think that SNK is really trying to grab our attention and demonstrate the attention to detail and quality that people didn’t believe they had. With this game they are becoming the forerunners of 2D sprite-based fighting! I think that had they used proportions that were a bit more on par with the normal conventions of KoF people would’ve complained about that, too. I think we would’ve heard things like, “Why didn’t they make the muscles bigger and more detailed with all this graphical power?” or “Why do the girls look like body builders?”
To be honest, guys, I’m climbing the walls with glee over this game. My reason for a next (current)-gen system has returned. I was originally planning on buying a PS3 for SFIV, but there has, literally, not been a single, solitary thing that has impressed me since day one. However, then someone showed me stills of the most beautifully made 2D fighter I’ve ever seen, and I’ve gotta say: it felt awesome! SNK is one of those companies that has never bathed in success the way that, say, Capcom has. They seem to be more concerned with their fans wants and needs, regardless of how much money they could lose (such is the case with XII, as was stated by the head of development). I say it’s time that they were given the spotlight that they’ve been denied for over a decade now. This is the hi-res, 2D, GIANT return of our childhood! lol I’m all for it. :woot:
