eh, i remember in that first year of the steve kerr era, grizz got out to a lead on the warriors, and was really hoping the grizz would lose. So i’m watching this game and its my first time seeing the 76ers that season… the 76ers are up 95-77 with 7 minutes left. and the grizz simply full court press. and it exposed the ROTY for what he was: an NBA player who couldn’t dribble, pass, shoot, make layups, or play meaningful defense. during that 7 minute period where he entered the game, he struggled to get him team do get past half court, much less meaningful offensive possessions, and mike conley just blew him up defensively every time down the floor.
so the grizz end up winning in OT, and whatever… its one game and big picture meant very little… but then over the next 2 months, i’d watch more sixers games, and wonder how he was even in the NBA. it seemed like a con job. like someone who fooled his way into the NBA, even got a season award, and it felt like no one had even watched him play a game his entire rookie season before touting him as a star.
Then he gets traded, and the world loses their minds. like “omg, its the ROTY… you can’t just trade him for a draft pick!” and i felt like i was being gaslit: this guy has no business in the NBA, but i’m being told by people everywhere, even philly fans on srk, that they should’ve held onto MCW and that it was a bad trade. everyone was reacting to him being a ROTY, and not realizing he was not good at basketball. the fact that it was jason kidd, one of the best point guards ever, saying that he was interested in someone without any NBA talent and giving up a valuable asset to get him was mindboggling.
from there, it was a lot of me proving to myself that my eyes weren’t lying to me. it took a few years for everyone to see what it was that i was seeing years earlier, it just took him being passed around too any team, and every time he moved, that team got considerably worse. how he continued to play in NBA games was wild: there were professional nba talent evaluators who continued to keep him on the court.
MCW is just one of those things that just made me feel like i was eating crazy pills. everyone was convinced this dude was good enough to argue with me about him, and it was impossible for me to understand what they were seeing. yeah, at this point its petty, but the fact that he’s still playing NBA ball and people like gerald green can’t maintain anything solid is so wild to me.
and he seems to consistently beat the warriors which might as well be the trolliest thing this fuckface could be doing to me.
Heads up: Nike is slowly rolling out some of the City merchandise for all teams on the NBA Store. Just ordered the 76ers shorts.
So the Lakers are now 0-7 without Lonzo and they look so trash without him. Its crazy how much they lean on him to win games. They look like the worst team in the league without him.
