I’ve seen this game before somewhere on here. Mind is foggy though. Just woke up. I like how it looks. Some dude in a YouTube comment was saying it’s F2P in Korea but will be P2P here. I don’t blame the makers though. Shit looks nice. Hell, I don’t even know if I could run this game. The website alone has my damn graphics card fan whirrin’! Haha. Impressive site though.
As for grinding, I used to hate that concept but then I thought about it and grinding is okay by me. It allows you to team up with other players and just shoot the shit while shooting shit [if you’re a mage]. Plus how many of us really read the quest stories? I know most of the time I don’t. I just look for the NPC on the map and click, click, click then hope my EXP bar goes a shitload up after I’m done with it all. Grinding in games…not so bad after all.
I dunno I think the grind element is inescapable, I mean they want you to work towards something after all…bet it exp/levels or rare items. I think they’re really gonna push the real time combat and large battle in this one and hope we can forgive the grinding…like most of the community always does.
This game looks like the kind of game that I want to play: something more action-based, and doesn’t do “combat relay” (Gonna start using that term from now on ) like many other MMO’s. When a game (Guild Wars) has a move called “Belly Flop,” I expect to see a belly flop, not an attack with a hammer. TERA looks like it would let you do a belly flop, and look cool doing it.
I discovered DFO recently and that game is great, but I would play TERA for sure.
Basically the community. You can team up with other people and chat while playing. Fight against one another and see who has the better character.
It’s like a networking site, but you can play a game while you’re networking. And if you don’t want to network, you can play solo like any other game.
Edit: Maybe networking was too strong a word. I dunno the exact definition but I think of Myspace and Facebook. Let’s say it’s like a chatroom. One big ol’ chatroom.
I would say it’s the escapism for the most part but the old formula got really stale, combat is a thing of a the past as system limitations have disappeared. Now games using PSO and Monster Hunter’s formulas are going to be coming out, mixing with the old MMO formulas.
But yeah it’d kinda help if you liked those games to begin with I guess. TERA’s shaping up to be bottled hotness and the translation campaign is going pretty well too.
The Koreans are the only ones doing these next gen titles at the moment (unless you count Japan who technically laid the pipework for it with PSO and MH) and I expect it to at least be a fresh experience. It likely will be a grind fest, but the focus is instead on interactive battle rather than waiting the whacking to end.
Here’s what they said about in the recent newsletter FAQ:
So basically, it’s a grind fest that you have to click/mash through instead of just AFKing and playing another game. Yay.
The game looks good though. It’s how I envision the MMO I wanna make to look like. Maybe I should move to Korea, hire a team of devs and crank out one. Game looks like it stoe the Humans from WoW, the Elves from Lineage, the architecture from Final Fantasy, and the environment from Middle-Earth. strangely, as a result, the world looks 1000% more enticing that the WoW universe.
