Bit of an update - really hit it off with Zangief (waits for collective groan), and yeah, I can freakin FADC from his lariat into his banishing flat. I know that’s so beginner but that’s a long way from where I came from!
The road to a stick may be a long one that involves saving money for a while - hard to justify that kind of expenditure unless I know it will be worth it. May start with a cheaper Hori Stick, which I can grab on ebay for about $90 AUS or so and see how that works for me. Americans have it a lot easier I think in terms of stick availability. The best deal we really have here at the moment is preordering SSFIV with JB Hi-Fi and getting a TE stick with it. That’ll be $250 odd bucks though. Yikes.
Stock it’s pretty terrible but, it’s good enough to let you know if you’ll want to stick with the game or not. If you decide to stick with it then buy the parts and mod it. The SE has a minimal “investment” with excellent expansion capabilities (when modded it feels just like the TE).
Personally I’d recommend just getting the TE now, It’s not an “investment” once you realize how crucial it is to your gameplay. But, I understand that getting TEs in australia is ass rapingly expensive(hence the suggestion to mod a SE instead).
Lots of time goes into learning a stick… most people recommend the stick and while it does allow you to access higher level techniques than you can with a pad, you will not automatically be good with it… when I bought mine, I was shocked at much shit I was unable to do on it…
So for you maybe dropping 100+ on a stick might now be justifiable to you… just depends on how much you enjoy playing…
Don’t worry about trial mode combos if your just starting out bro, first focus on the fundamentals. If your fundamentals like footsies, zoning, and simple bnb’s are weak, then all the combos in the world won’t save you. I would first focus on being able to play a solid basic game. Once you feel comfortable with this, then begin integrating more advanced combos and links into your play.
Edit: Also remember, when you transition to the stick you will need to relearn a lot of your execution. So if you plan to transition to a stick, then the sooner is better then later.
I’ll throw in my 2 cents for you as well. Since you say you have a short attention span and you feel it can’t be helped then try this: forget trials for now and just practice motions and moves. Make it a point to practice them for as long as you can every day. After you feel comfortable with these basic skills then move on to some simple combos of your character of choice. Youtube and SRK are great places to find all of those. Learn his/her bread-n-butter combos and make sure you feel comfortable with them. Do this process at your own pace. Nobody is holding a gun to your head. Of course don’t expect immediate results eh? Who knows, maybe you might feel your attention span is widening slowly. Always always always keep in mind that first and foremost fighting games are GAMES and they should be fun for you. Of course all of this is just imho. Good luck and enjoy!
