In arcade casuals, Ive played people that normally pick Psylocke as a crutch pick TRON (who plays COMPLETELY DIFFERENT from Psylocke) because itll supposedly help them beat Wolverine easier DESPITE the fact that theyll be disadvantaged against whoever comes after me. They pick Tron just for me, you see. As if Wolverine or I are that much of a threat.
I guess I am, because I can beat their silly asses anyway. In any case, thats just arcade casuals, where you have to stick with your same team. In console casuals, its nothing but counter teams for me. So yeah, you dont need to tell me people wont be taking it easy.
People will do anything they can to get that win. Its as if theyll do everything but convince themselves that theyre capable of winning either way. Its all about that judgment at the end of the round. Computer says YOU WIN, then shit you win. Dude, if I brought you down to a shred of your life I STILL fucked you up. Computer aint giving me no bottom line.
All that aside, the wild card team has to also accept the possibility that the people we play in tournament may pick low tier (likely) or low tier based teams (even less likely) to prevent us from looking good or proving anything at all. Who knows, maybe someone will play one of their low tier casual streak teams so he can say he didnt care. Personally, Id rather play my best against Storm/Sentinel/AAA and get my ass beaten like a man but he might not give us the pleasure.
Like I said, it doesnt even have to be that: people could very well pick a top tier team with a low tier crutch to cop out of the responsibility. Storm/Sentinel/Akuma, for example (‘I lost cuz I had Akuma!’). 
Now, lets take the case that we fought and won. Before anyone would even argue for low tier, they would first say that you, I or whoever did it was special before going on to think they can use Rogue, Wolverine or whatever low tier character was used to win. Ive seen this since the pre-shoryuken days of IRC.

I even heard that Sakura was considered garbage until John Choi got on the scene and the reason Sakura is considered a success story (from low to top tier) could only be because A) shes got a devastating custom in A-groove (Shes totally underused in MvC2) and B) because back when Choi made her popular, there werent online forums for trolls to discourage potential Sak users by saying stupid shit like, Well thats because hes Choi. Back then, it was all underground knowledge. One guy from NorCal would use and win a tournament with her (Choi), one of the guys who witnessed it would take it back to his borough, and the bunch of lil scrubbies playing there would monkey-see monkey-do. Eventually it would get down to SoCal and Id be getting my ass beat at a local liquor store by a mediocre Sakura player in Alpha 2. That’s just the way it was when I began playing. The way it is now is a travesty.

So there even if you won, it wouldnt do anything for Rogue. The masses would rather believe that youre special before believing they could do it and that doesnt help SF at all. All this AFTER you overcome the initial disputes over the possibility that your opponent wasnt playing seriously. Because, after all, they COULD play a low tier based team to disclaim your skill OR put a low tier assist (in other words, less used but equally as good) on their roster and even if they did play top tier, youd have to win multiple tournaments with your character before anyone would even begin to think you are (much less your character is) good.
The first major tournament you win (which hasnt yet been accomplished) couldve been an easy bracket and fluke at the end or because you got a lot of lucky hits, OR because the second/third place opponent was DRUNK (which doesnt take into account how he got second or third place but HEYIve heard this fucking excuse before, too)!!
All this WHICH I HAVE SEEN FIRST HAND BEFORE and low tier hasnt even won a tournament yet. You havent won a major tournament. I havent.

Because I simply cant be the hero for everyone whether I lose (Man, if only he didnt use low tier!) or win (Only he couldve done it because hes amazing!/That was just a fluke). Bottom line is people have to believe in themselves and Ive already done that.
Im already an SF success story because of this. To me, its simply because SF helped me to believe in myself and as far as Im concerned, ALL of the people who continue play (whether they place low or high) STILL dont.
The only exceptions to that judgment exist in my mind and are my personal favorites people that can lose and take it like a man. People that can play and keep their mouths shut. People who dont need a little fucking game to tell them what theyre worth. I truly hope theyre rewarded for their hard work and effort most of which was exerted WITHOUT a damn game.

I still remember the brief version of this you gave me at the PSM tourney last week.
Nearly everything you’ve mentioned has crossed my mind. But you know what? To me, it just comes down to how well I play. I haven’t won a tournament either, but I don’t mind losing if I was playing my best. Most of my losses can be attributed to some degree of faulty play. So yes, I, too, suck, but since there’s room to do better it keeps the challenge interesting.
People “kiss your ass” because they like watching you play. Good low-tier can be fresh and interesting to see, particularly if the opponent is using high-tier. Hell, I’ve been playing my same exact team for years now, and players in the “audience” still take stronger focus to my matches than the others. And when Tony G picked Silver Samarai at the last RFC tourney, everyone paid attention because they were like, “Oh shit it’s Silver Samurai!! What’ll happen??” :eek:
Everyone likes to root for the underdog, and in our cases we’re always the underdogs. And players of all ranks give support to us, so I don’t think it is a scheme just to get extra contribution into the SooMighty fund. Most players don’t win tournaments, and this is ok. SF would be in even worse shape if every tournament only had 3 players. I’m going to enter Evo, and I can say with certainty that I won’t get 1st. I’ll be lucky to get 200th. I go to have fun.
And I’ll be rooting for team Wildcard, just like nearly everyone else will be. I only regret that I couldn’t be a part of it! Good luck.
