So if I am a sniper…I only pick up Sniper-related drops?
I honestly don’t know. I got that scout drop when i was playing as a Spy. But that guy who got those two sniper drops in my game was playing as a Sniper.
One thing i noticed was that i was picking weapons from dead enemies. Though i’m not too sure if that has any influence over it. Another guy got a drop after he respawned.
I take back what I said about the random drops…I think it’s a good thing.
Especially for their free weekend/$9.99 weekend deal they got going on.
Yeah, it looks like it’s random. I’m reports that some people are getting the ambassador from just sitting in spawn.
i’ve yet to see any of the new weapons
so i have no idea how i’m gonna get any of these new things 
do dead enemies drop them or do just appear on the ground or something?
Magnetro got the Ambassador just by spectating…
Basically if you just play long enough you should get everything

They’re gonna go over it a bit more tomorrow on the TF2 blog, but they confirm that it’s completely random.
EDIT: It does seem a little bugged though. Getting items in spectator mode is ridiculous.

I mean I think unlocking shit randomly while playing is a good idea. or at least on the right track
but the backpack system seems like it’s going to turn out stupid
I just played for a couple hours on 2fort. As a career spy, my first random “MMORPG” drop that I snagged was The Ambassador. I got it in respawn room after I died. I totally lucked out. When I read that the thing was capable of headshots I kind of worried that it might be OP. It’s definitely really good, I got the 50 kill “Diplomacy” achievement with it fairly fast. The damage it does on headshots isn’t obscene like I was expecting it to be though. Any drawback it does have I wasn’t having a problem with, like at all, ever.
(Edit: The gun isn’t actually all that great. I think it was the psychological effect of wielding a hand cannon and going Rambo for a change. I was reading some of the stats for ‘Mini-Crits’ vs Standard Revolver body shots and I’m disappointed. It also cannot damage buildings at all.)
I did also find the Kritzkrieg (duplicate for me, as I have all the other pre-update unlocks) in an ammo pile. After I died it went to the equip screen and bugged out, prompting Valve’s bug report app.
I really want the Cloak and Dagger, but after snagging the hand cannon so fast, I’m fine with waiting for now.

So I was just reading how Spies can now use their taunt kill while cloaked or disguised to take out Engineer SGs or Dispensers.
