As the dust settles and everyone is going back home, I decided that I would give some highlights for those who did not attend evo this year.
Day 1. We arrive in ontario at about 1130pm and the place smells like CRYPT SHIT. Psx2000 meets ernest and me there and we go to Denny’s cause thats the only place open. ON the way home ernestw ALMOST gets side-swiped with a car that was going about ninety to a hundred miles.
Day 2. Ernestw and I meet up with psx2000 and erikbuild at camelot about a half hour away. The arcade itself was AMAZING. They had an assortment of old games and every new game including svc. Needless to say, I think it was sort of a wake up call as to how much we (cept for psx) needed to adapt to cali rush not just in mvc2, but cvs2 as well. After we decided to go to family fun and I got to see why many people consider it to be the next SHGL. Every cabinet there was for a fighting game. The sticks/buttons were always fixed and there was ALWAYS competition there. One interesting thing were a couple of the cabinets only had one player sides, so if you wanted to challenge you would have to go to the cabinet on the opposite side of the arcade. This was a really good way to practice because you no longer would be able to react to a person’s flinch or anything of the sort when playing adjacent to someone else. Oh and the best part about family fun was that it closed at THREE in the morning.
Day 3. There was a family fun tourney so ernest was kind enough to take me to the tourney just for me to see how I would rate in a tourney. I got ninth place, but the most important lesson i learned was that although I placed ninth, there was a good chance that I could have gotten higher if I tweaked a few aspects of my game. OH and let me say that justinw, X, and the rest of their crew are too fucking funny.
Day 4. Evo. signups. Well you could really feel the tension in the air. This was the day we finally saw the ballroom. It was considerably smaller than the UCLA room was last year, but it was so much more cleaner. OH yeah this was also the day that we went to ontario mills, a local mall. Walking into the mall itself all I could think was DAMN! ALL THE CHICKS WERE FUCKIN HOT. No joke. Even the youngins were hot. It was really an eyeopener. Right after we headed down to evo. to sign up. Everyone left a little earlier to get ready for evo.
Day 5. Evo. begins. I was in the first pool for mvc2 so I was hella nervous, but I went unscathed in my pool. Other highlights that day were erikbuild and psx2000 both making their pools. It was a pretty good first day for team Hawaii. We all were waiting to see how ernestw would do the next day for the final day of pool play. There were so many crazy matches in every game you wouldn’t even believe.
Day 6. Pools and semifinals. I was kind of discouraged to find out that ernestw did not make it out of his pool. That was pretty much when he made the resolution to move from A to C.:bluu: Erikbuild had to play Cole in his semifinals match and he played pretty well, but unfortunately he didn’t get past cole. I dunno what it was, but Cole was on it that day. I’m pretty sure that he was the first person to take out CHoi. Psx2000 must have stepped on a ton of shit because he was winning matches that he REALLY should not have been winning especially the ohayo match. BUT, he did win so more power to him. Fortunately he got taken out one match away from top eight by amir. The highlight of this day for me though was the EC vs WC 5 on 5. From the intro to the end of it, I would honestly say that seeing this pretty much made my trip. Everyone else in the building had been stoked about this matchup. Even if you didn’t play marvel, you still wanted to see this matchup. I don’t wanna give too much away, but it was UNBELIEVABLE to watch.
DAy 7.
Well what can I say, pretty much all the finals were alright except for 3s and CvS2. Actually watching top level of play made me want to play Cvs2 and 3s even more. Overall, I think that the finals were not as good, and the finale of each tournament was pretty bland except for the above mentioned tourneys.
In general, I think that it was an awesome trip. There was so much that i learned about each game that it was well worth the money. I even came away with a new respect for games such as v4 and sc2. Yeah, there was a lot of good shit there. Finals, 3s and Cvs2 hands down the best. We are not that far off in cvs2. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if we do put someone in the top eight next year. Actually I think that the players here have a better chance of getting better at cvs2 than in 3s. 3s, hawaii is nowhere near the level of advanced play. No joke, cali peeps really play 3s as much as they do mvc2. I think the peeps here would not do as well in 3s as they would do in cvs2. Mvc2, hawaii can hang. I think the hardest part about mvc2 that I experienced up there were all the random, yet unique styles of each player.
Umm oh yeah forgot to mention all the cools peeps that i met. Justinw, X, Somespidyplyer, Nibor, Chris, Clockw0rk, Deus, Mixup, Taiji, Duc, MAG, Potter, Soo, Hadouken, Shadyk, Wigfall, Junior B, Sabin, Ricky O., Watson, Mr. power, Korngo, CJ, and a couple more peeps. If I forgot you, sorry.
