I wish I had the patience for SC2. Are team games still popular? I just get auto-raped in 1v1. Does the ladder/rank system really promote development as a player, or is it just a bunch of scrubs on the bottom while anything past the lowest tier is super grandmaster players?
Wildy popular. 80% of the 1.2million sc2 population are bronze through platinum, and most of them dont enjoy 1v1ing. So yea you can find plenty of 2v2/3v3/4v4. 3v3s and 4v4 would be for you as theres very little overall strategy outside of macroing up.(building your army etc) as fast as possible and not dieing to wierd chz 2on1/3on1. (ie youll have the most fun.)
2v2 however still has alot of strategy at the highest levels. Currently i am top 2 Masters League in 2v2 Random teams(means i beat ass even with sorry ass people i dont know, some mates are good most are not) I think im like top 200-300 in teams cant remember last time i checked. and thats over litterally a half a million+ active/semi-active teams.
Ladder system is meant to keep you at 50/50 you kick ass it gives you opponents above your level. you get your ass kicked you stay where you belong. you kick thier ass (after several games of doing so verse higher MMR opponents) and you get moved up higher in your league until you play vrs someone in a higher league and get moved up.
Currently leagues are as follows.
Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Masters, GrandMasters(1v1 only) top 200 on the entire server.
P.S. i dont 3s or 4s anymore because i know the game inside and out and im trying to be more serious with it, but i remember during beta and the first month or so of sc2 being release i had a ball doing 3s and 4s+ skype. shit was good times. youll enjoy it.

Not worried about the masters player. the grandmasters player however… FUCCKK. practicing with my bud all night tonight. Hes the one playing Painuser tomorrow. Hes been smashing coL(the GM dude is in coL),ROOT, and vT players on ladder. if anyone can get my prepped its him! fuck im hyped!
