Anyone up for games tomorrow?

Ill be back tomorrow but I won’t get in until 1 am, bud
In other news, I see why Abel feels so hard for me to play against (throws aside). All of this neutral jumping and backdashing, hitting 10 times as many buttons to keep this mofo out. I feel so scrub.
anybody up for games tonight?
Cant tonight man, Had my consult today and i’m in some pain still. I’m thinking of hosting Friday rather than Tomorrow night. Does that work for everyone?
will this be out in the states in theaters?
omg, it has to be better than the live action film
im leavin tommorow night, but it is what it is
Do you remember the screenplay to Cowboy Bebop? It really wasn’t that good. Cowboy Bebop gets away with a lot because it has fucking style and a soundtrack by Kanno Yoko. There’s not really anything that exciting about the story. Maybe if BONES or Madhouse was doing the animation I’d be more excited…
I might be in the market for a 360 stick… anybody have a spare they’re willing to sell? I and a buddy from Tampa are going to CEO but he only has a PS3 stick.
Cowboy Bebop movie I agree with you, but the series was the shit. I have never heard anyone down the series. Oh yeah, watch it subbed, makes the series 10 times better.
Thats true for nearly all anime.
Yeah, the movie was kind of bleh, but the series had EVERYTHING you could ask for in an anime. Not just seeing it through nostalgia goggles here, it was just great.
@GMike: I posted this on Facebook, but just in case you didn’t see it:
Actually, EVERYBODY check that. It’s good shit.
Series was good, but IMO not as amazing as people say. It had a great soundtrack, and great animation, but the characters were kind of hit or miss and a bit inconsistent. It relies almost entirely on its style to deliver all its great moments. It’s cool, but it doesn’t really have the staying power of a show with more substance.
I mean, I understand why people like it so much, it’s anime made for Americans and it came out when the only anime most Americans had exposure was fucking DBZ and Pokemon, or maybe Sailor Moon for the more dedicated. If they had tightened up the pacing and pulled out some of the basically filler episodes it could have been one of the best, but as it is it’s just quite good.
And subbed goes without saying. Dubbing, as a process, is shit and there’s really no reason for it nowadays. It’s a lot of money that doesn’t need to be spent, both from the voice-acting perspective and the new script they have to write. That being said, Cowboy Bebop does have one of the best dubs in history. Still pointless, though.
Thanks man! It was the random ultra’s I was throwing out…lol.
-I don’t really get where you’re coming from about the characters being inconsistent. And as far as staying power/substance: Name more than three shows from that era that are nearly as talked about today? Bebop is consistently remembered as one of the best anime of all time, not to mention its generation.
-Made for Americans? No! Well-marketed to Americans? Absolutely. Could the show have worked as a single season instead of two? Sure, but the filler episodes were drastically better than most other shows’ fillers.
-As far as the whole sub/dub thing, anime would have a much weaker foothold in places outside of Japan without dubbing. Is that a good thing or a bad thing? No clue. But anime as a media is much, much stronger (worldwide) because of dubbing. Bebop does indeed have one of the best. I think it’s because VA’s gave more of a shit back then? Most of the good ones have been in the business for a long time and have to be sick of playing the some cliched roles over and over again.
Basically what MikeG said. It’s also a testament that a series doesn’t need to last 25 seasons. Good TV shows only last a year or two, it let’s writers be more creative and prevents the filler “imma chargin mah lazer” episodes
well dubbing is needed because most of it is not just for translation but for reinterpetation since most of the stuff thats suitable for tv over there would give some soccer mom a major wedgie. So series like naruto, bleach, op, and even dbz who’s major american audience is teens and younger would not really be allowed to see them if they didnt dub and reinterpet the product. Cause most anime’s have those good ole american no no’s when it comes to tv for kids cursing, realistic violence, and nudity.
And thats for the kid friendly stuff by japanese standards, now with a series like cowboy bebop its just way too much adult type content and if they didnt dub to gauge if they even have an audience for it outside of japan, they wouldnt have the money from import sales or need to sub because of lack of overseas audience.
The characters just never really develop a real voice that remains throughout the series. There’s a lack of characterization in general, which is part of the problem. Furthermore, there isn’t a whole lot of growth that goes on. Nothing really evolves during the show. There is little natural progression from the first episode to the last, so that by watching only a handful of episodes you have basically seen Cowboy Bebop, even if you may have missed some sweet vignettes. And that is the American style of TV storytelling, not the traditional Japanese anime angle. There’s a place for both, but generally I find the continuous stories to be better overall, assuming their quality is up to par.
The series was made with many western sensibilities and in a very America style. It didn’t do well in Japan at all, and that isn’t just because they had more anime to watch at the time. A similar, much worse show was GunxSword, that was specifically made as an anime with things Japanese people thought westerners liked. It did very poorly in Japan and was fairly popular here, despite being a complete piece of trash.
As far as naming more than three shows from the same era, are we talking series or any anime, and what exactly are you defining as “an era?” Cowboy Bebop may very well have been the best series to come out in its season, I’d have to do some digging to find out. Bebop is consistently remembered by Americans as one of the best anime of all time, and mostly by Americans who don’t watch that much anime. Like I said, it’s good, but it’s hallowed place has a lot to do with the Adult Swim crowd.
I’m not denying that dubbing is a useful process for achieving more mass market appeal. That being said, anime still doesn’t have mass market appeal in a lot of the places where it’s dubbed and reinterpreted heavily. I have a problem with dubbing simply in principle. I just don’t think it should ever happen. I understand a lot of people are too lazy and/or dumb to read subtitles, but dubbing, at best, is just an awkward copy, and, at worst, ruins the fucking show. In general, when I am enjoying any media, I like it to be as close to the original as possible with obvious allowances for translation. I prefer translation notes to joke rewrites, and when there is voice involved, I prefer to have the original track with subtitles. This is true in video games, movies, and anime.
Also, 25 episodes IS one season. A season of anime is 24-26 episodes. Two seasons would be 48-52 episodes, etc.
The main reason for the good dub of Cowboy Bebop is that they hired basically the best VAs America had to offer, short of going the Disney route with Ghibli films and hiring real actors. The pool of Japanese VAs is much larger and better developed, so they have a lot more talent to choose from and actually cast. English VA credits on anime are all depressingly similar.
//EDIT\
Project, I have a problem with censorship as well. It’s not that I don’t understand why they dub and censor things, I just don’t like it.
I agree. I still contend that there is only one truly good anime longer than ~50 episodes, which is Monster. I haven’t seen enough American TV to be as definitive, but just look at the difference between Firefly and Buffy/Angel, for example.
The thing is: most anime are just on season deals. Sure, you have the Shounen shovelware that lasts year after year, but that is the exception rather than the rule. Or maybe a different ruleset, or something.
Speaking of Animu, is BBCS2 up for PS3 users yet?
