True, but the ground game also makes use of special moves. The shoto’s footsies game isn’t as threatening without a fireball or DP. Bison normally has a great ground game, but without scissor kicks or psychocs, he has to resort to spamming st.forward and st.roundhouse, since he can’t jump, Dhalsim can literally just mash buttons and win. Neither of which shows a high level of skill, or is very entertaining for spectators to watch.
This type of tourney favors the character that has a great throw, dominating pokes, doesn’t need to jump, and doesn’t need normals or specials. Dhalsim wins at all of these things.
I think it would be a fun tourney if we tweaked the rules a bit, or locked out specific characters.
I can think of a lot of things:
[]Mavrick special time out after a life lead;
[]Dee Jay walk up st.Short;
[]Chun walk up st.Strong;
[]Nogie trap;

Dhalsim’s back + Short.
Man I would love to try Guile in that kind of tourney. I don’t know that Sim can just mash away because his attacks don’t have great priority. What really makes Sim fucked up for me is the threat of fireball chip to life lead timeout. Otherwise I would gladly trade normals the whole match at half screen range.
Wow, normals and throws only? That actually sounds fun. People will actually be mashing out of holds.
What will the penalty be if someone accidentally jumps or something though? Do they forfeit the round? Does the opponent take a free throw?
Characters with command overheads might be really good.
I think Claw, Chun, and Cammy will shine in a format like this. Possibly Blanka too. I wonder if Chun’s neckbreaker is going to cause problems: technically, it’s not a jump attack or a special, but a command normal.
And yeah, Sim’s ambiguous roundhouse slide on the shotos might be murder. The deadliest normal-only combo I can think of is Dic’s st. short x3 into st. roundhouse. His st. short is amazing for ticks, too.
Sounds like Akuma could be legal for this one but afaik his normal set is identical to Ryu’s (at least Ken has a different roundhouse) and takes more damage :lol:.
We’ve decided that the player will lose the round automatically if a jump occurs twice. Since the turnout wasn’t as expected today, if there’s still interest, we are going to move this tournament to the next WNF (June 6th).
Hey, I have a suggestion about the weekly gatherings. Friday streams doesn’t work with a lot of peoples schedules. All the single guys won’t show up on fridays because thats the day they go out on the prowl for poon tang. I talked to some guys from San Deigo and I think they would show up if it was moved to sunday. Ceasar and his crew from up north might be more inclined to show up every now and then if we could do sunday gatherings as well.
Just a thought, what do you guys think?
EDIT: maybe just until EVO. then we can change it back after. I think some guys from SD want to come up to get some offline practice for EVO.
I think a few of us from SD may be able to come up on the weekend if there was something going on for some pre-EVO practice. Friday nights would be impossible for me and I think for the others as well.
We changed things in the hope of keeping Armando from having a fully booked weekend and to attract some of the people that show up for Friday night casuals, but it is definitely worth consideration if you guys are more inclined to Sundays. Armando will have to make the decision on this one though. He and BlockbusterJon will be handling all things ST-related at Super Arcade after this Wednesday.
I believe there were talks of a major ST tournament at Super Arcade BEFORE EVO!
It’s looking like I’m heading to So Cal for Wednesday and staying in the area through the weekend. Please welcome me @ Super or wherever by whopping my rusty ass repeatedly in ST. I’m trying to attend both WNF and Runback. Hope to see you guys soon.
as a muffin man going away party, ill provide food and dessert for all the loyal ST crew out there. lets try to figure out an exact time and date for all this, and lets beat him up a little so he will remember all of us while hes in korea
