I was just wondering if anyone has any KKY versus Gian sim matches. I can’t decide who has a stronger sim. Same with Muteki versus Kurahashi (does K only play ryu now)?
Dee Jay 4 hit MGU technique
I’ve found the best way to get the MGU to combo all 4 hits is by using a drumming technique. I position my hand over all 3 punches like I’m going to do a turn-around punch with Balrog (I actually hit the buttons with the underside of my knuckles for super-fast button hits). Then I drum, one at a time fierce, strong, jab and do this series of button hits four times. So in total I do 12 button presses for 4 hits of the MGU.
The 4 hit MGU hits every character and most characters will get hit by all 4 hits even after two low jabs (example combo: cross up forward, low jab, low jab xx 4 hit MGU). The best dizzy combo with the MGU is: cross up forward, low fierce xx 4 hit MGU.
I hope this helps-

EDIT: Found out, nevermind.
Gian is a much more solid 'Sim player from what I’ve seen. He knows certain match-ups better, and KKY is much more reckless. 'Sim mirror is a sloppy match anyway.
Agreed on both points: Gian is much better, and Sim vs. Sim is an ugly match…
what about muteki’s guile versus kurahashi’s guile? They both know character matchips very well. I saw them play once and in four rounds muteki won, but barely.
I dunno who wins more overall, but I think that Kurahashi is much more cautious and safe. Muteki will take big risks sometimes, like trying to do a Psychic Flash Kick, etc.
Both are amazingly good though. Probably the 2 best Guiles on earth.
Some questions to Graham:
What do you think about the Super Turbo guide you wote in 1995 (94?)? How it holds up to today? Are the tiers still accurate or have you changed your mind?
Are you (and your bro) still planning to go to Japan? Weren’t you guys traveling there for X-Mania 7 (8?).
Whats your POV on counterpicking? (NKI, you can also answer this) I play Balrog and feel VERY FRUSTATED playing against Honda/'Sim. Should i try to learn more the matches or should i counterpick in a tournament?
Oh, another thing: Check the Balrog (BOXER) thread. WE need your advice. THX in advance.
NKI: Can you do an elaborate list for all the best players for each characters in Japan? Something like:
Guile: Kurahashi, Muteki
Chun: Otochun
Ken:Mattsun, Aniken.
And if there’s more than one, can you describe your pick for best (like in the Kurahashi - Muteki) and explain why the pick?
THX to BOTH in advance. GREAT thread NKI. This game is hothothot here in Santo Domingo :D.
NKI: What is Dictator “Touch of Death” combo?
hey guys i was wondering about match ups between characters can some one post up why matches fall in favor over the other i.e. ryu has over e.honda because of fire ball game thanx
I’ve already written up how I feel about counter characters:
http://shoryuken.com/wiki/index.php?title=Super_Street_Fighter_2_Turbo#Strategy
Others may disagree, but that’s what I think.
Hrm…this won’t be a complete list, but off the top of my head:
Ryu: Daigo (honorable mentions: Shooting D, Ani-Ken)
Ryu is the perfect character for Daigo’s style of play, which is basically reading your mind and countering everything you do. He uppercuts limbs; he nails you with overheads when you duck; he hits you with Short-Short-Super when you stand up; he throws you when you sit there. Shooting D and Ani-Ken both have good Ryus, but they just don’t win as much as Daigo.
Ken: Ani-Ken (honorable mention: Mattsun)
Ani-Ken is like Daigo in that he reads your mind, but unlike Daigo, Ani-Ken does slightly more risky stuff, like an occasional jump in, or a BLATANT walk-up throw from like half screen away. Mattsun is good, and he is the KING of shenanigans, but that dude takes big risks too often, and he loses rounds because of it.
Honda: ??? (honorable mention: Shougatsu)
Can’t remember any Honda players other than Shougatsu, who plays O.Honda. Dude is surprisingly good, but I think there’s probably a better Honda player who I’m forgetting…
Chun: Oto-Chun
There’s a good number of other Chun players, but none of them wins as much as Oto-Chun. Generally he’s a pretty safe player, but sometimes he takes risks, like jumping in. (But with a lot of Chun’s matches, you have to jump sometimes…)
Blanka: Komoda Blanka
In Japan there are actually several Blanka players. However, most of them rely too heavily on shenanigans, like after a knock down, doing ambiguous cross-up Blanka Ball, meaty st.Strong, two-hit Headbutt for the dizzy. Of course Komoda Blanka also uses shenanigans (you have to with Blanka), but you can tell that he’s also a really smart player, and he knows the match-ups pretty well.
Gief: Pony Gief (honorable mention: Kuni)
Pony Gief really is amazing. He makes beating Dhalsim look easy. He cr.RH’s limbs from almost full screen away. He knows exactly when to jump. Once he gets in, he finishes you off. Kuni is also really good and wins tough matches (like against O.Sagats), but overall I think Pony Gief is slightly better.
Guile: Kurahashi Guile (honorable mention: Muteki Guile)
Kurahashi is a robot. His execution is off the hook. Watch his match with John Choi from the first USA vs. Japan. He does about 5 billion reversal Sonic Booms, and he actually keeps up with the Tiger Shots. Muteki Guile is also mad good, but he takes unnecessary risks sometimes, and I’ve also seen him mess up Short-Short-Super a number of times…
Dhalsim: Gian
There are a lot of Dhalsims in Japan, but none of them are on Gian’s level. He just knows the matches inside and out, and he shows now mercy. He doesn’t rely on gimmicks like Short slide, noogie. He wins by totally out-zoning you and keeping you locked down.
Hawk: Toutanki, Mayakon
I haven’t seen enough of Mayakon to make a decision who’s better, but they are both crazy good. Toutanki has that fearlessness…he just doesn’t care…he’s going to get in, and you’re going to get spun around. Even though he choked HARD, his match against Kurahashi Guile at SBO1 was awesome…
Cammy: Sawada
He wins just by default. I’ve never seen another Cammy player. (BTW, this is not the same Sawada who plays CvS2.)
Fei: Noguchi
Haven’t really seen any other great Fei players, but Noguchi is amazing. His execution is mad good, and his rush down is pretty overwhelming. He’s also quite good at making you guess wrong. (He throws you when you think the Flame Kick is coming, and he Flame Kicks you when you think the throw is coming.)
DeeJay: Yuu Vega
I don’t know why I’m having such a hard time thinking of DeeJay players, but all I can remember aside from Yuu Vega is that Tamashima played him for a while.
Boxer: Tsuujii (honorable mentions: Tamashima, Daigo)
Tsuujii is kinda like Daigo in that he’s super safe and usually takes no risks. He uses crazy mad rush down, but it’s still safe rush down. He uses safe-jumps and option select all over the place, which is why he wins so much. Tamashima uses slightly more shenanigans and takes more risks, but still wins hella. I’m assuming everyone’s seen Daigo play Boxer.
Claw: Noguchi, ARG
Noguchi and ARG have radically different play styles. ARG is super offensive on the ground. He pokes the hell out of you, and then when you hesitate for that split second, he does a walk-up throw. It’s really scary watching that guy’s Claw. Noguchi just wins with Claw Dives. Not saying that he is a scrubby Claw or anything…he’s hella good, but I’m just spittin’ it straight. All he does is Claw Dives, and he’s the best in the world at it.
Sagat: yaya
Only seen a few N.Sagat players, but yaya is definitely the best I’ve seen. His Psychic Tiger Uppercut is really good, and he knows the matches quite well. Dunno why he likes N.Sagat, though…
Dic: Yuu Vega
He’s hella dirty. Cross-up RH slides, cross-up Psycho Crushers, never missing a Touch of Death, EVER…too good.
He has many variations, but in general:
j.RH, st.Short, cr.Forward xx Scissor Kicks, dizzy, repeat
If you land a cross-up j.Forward or j.RH, against most characters (maybe all?) you can do three st.Shorts into Psycho Crusher. Not a guaranteed dizzy, but it will dizzy a lot.
Which characters in specific are you interested in?
hey NKI… what boxer option selects are you referring to?
And is the meaty jump light attack, c jab x 2, whatever string i see boxer players use a safe jump if timed right?
i play ryu, chun, guile and boxer mainly so i was wondering for them thanx
I swear the timing is a coincidence vis a vis NKI’s post above but I’ve been working on a rundown of Japanese ST players. BTW - the goofy copy in the player descriptions I mostly lifted from 2ch posts. Check it out:
http://curryallergy.blogspot.com/
Well, it’s been pretty well established at this point that the Japanese don’t like to use O. Sagat.
That was an awesome breakdown u did there, great stuff… and good to see u posting here again! Thanks for keeping us up to date with the newest jap st footage. :lovin:
Who’s this Hakase guy?
Whoa! … nice. :lovin:
Keep up the nice work too
nohoho - Awesome work, yo. Keep it up!
KUSUMONDO!!
And that’s pretty ironic that right after I write up those player descriptions, nohoho links to vids of Kurahashi and ARG playing the exact OPPOSITE of how I described.
He does a lot of [whiff high rush, Jab Buffalo Headbutt] from just the right distance, such that if you try to attack, you get hit, but if you block the Headbutt, you can’t punish him. He also does a lot of safe-jumping.
Yes indeed.
Can you narrow it down a little more? I don’t really have the time (or the knowledge) to give you a break-down of 64 different match-ups.
He’s a really good Dhalsim player who used to go to More all the time. We were actually on a team together for Try arcade’s 5-on-5 in 2005, but unfortunately I had to bail out early (while we were still in the tourney) in order to meet up with insanelee, who was staying with me for SBO…
Hakase is quite good, but I definitely think Gian is better…
THX for all the reply’s, and another VERY IMPORTANT Q’:
Why this game is so awesome, NKI???
