With those drastic stat changes and the range on his attacks, Shulk has become another possible main or sub. I just hope that he has an actual use for all of his Monado buffs. In other words, I hope he was designed to use all of them regularly in a fight.
So who has the longer USmash? Shulk, or Palutena?

I imagine that’s what the jump and speed buffs are for.
Speaking of which, I wonder how you cycle through them. Having 5 different buffs but having to press down+B repeatedly to cycle to the one you want seems like a big annoyance, depending on how fast/slow you can do it.
Unless they changed priority rules, Shulk can just cut through most projectiles with the sword.
In the leaks he was using it while moving left and right, so I think it’s either NSpec or SSpec. Plus, Counters are traditionally used as DSpec.
The cycling alone would cause grief for Shulk. He’s got buffs for every occasion, but I don’t think he can bust them out on a whim, let alone amidst a barrage of Arrows and Bombs.
I have a pretty similar example. Anyone who has played League of Legends likely knows of Twisted Fate, a champ who attacks with cards. One of his abilities has him cycling through his cards with specific effects applying, most notably his Gold Card which causes a stun. TF got utility, but when people need that Gold Card, there’s at least a half second delay between activation and implementation. Sure the utility is there and that’s good and all, but utility comes at the cost of lag. I see Shulk being similar: The utility will be useful, but he’ll rarely have a good opportunity to implement it when he really needs it mid combat. Sure he can change after KO and when he spawns, but I don’t think he’ll have time to do so mid match.
I doubt it. His blade doesn’t cover good angles and his attack animations look slow.
They’re not Meta-Knight or Pit speed, but he’s not sluggish. And his tilts and aerials have some pretty good coverage range. It seems he can angle his FSmash, too, so it’s not just a straight line.
Plus, he’s got the Speed and Jump Buffs to dodge projectiles and the Shield Buff to tank them.
So apparently Sakurai posted additional information on Shulk and his Monado Buffs.
“Shulk’s sword, the Monado, slashes enemies with a beam when activated, so it can strike from long range. What really makes this weapon unique is that when the Monado Arts are activated, it can change Shulk’s features and abilities! Emerge victorious in battle by changing your abilities strategically!!”
翔 (Jump): higher jumps, lower defense.
疾 (Speed): faster movement, weaker attacks.
盾(Shield): higher defense, slower movement.
斬(Buster): stronger attacks, weaker launch ability.
撃(Smash): Stronger launch ability, weaker attacks, lower defense against launching.
