Super Smash Bros. Brawl thread v2. wii want it now

I was just looking through the SSBB stages, and it seems that more stages will be viable to play at tourneys in SSBB then there was in SSBM. Most stages in SSBM were banned because they either had a “circle”, walk ledges/low ceilings, or were to random. The only stagethat has the “circle” is New Pork City. Walk off ledges shouldn’t be a problem in this game since wavedashing is out (so Fox can’t waveshine opponents do death). The only stage with a low ceiling is Pictochat. And none of the stages seem to be overly random (except for Pictochat).

It’s all of about 2 weeks and some change. And unless you’re really concerned about online play, it’s a moot point to most people, any way. In the end, we’ll just have the importers and JP players leading the way in another game once again, only this time the window of time is shorter.

Any way, I’ve said it on SmashBoards, and I’ll say it here too: as far as I’m concerned, I’d be happier if Sakurai and crew worked their asses off, so that in the end, Brawl ends up being the “Super Turbo” of the Smash Bros. lineage. In other words, a predominantly well-made fighter that has more than enough real depth on its own, such that exploits (I wouldn’t consider them ATs) wouldn’t really be needed at all, barring the fact that they’re hopefully not such a big part of the meta-game any way.

I mean, let’s face it, ST didn’t need engine exploits to end up being a game that’s been played for over 10 years (and still going!). Yes, ST is not perfect; it’s got tiers, it’s got aspects of the game that can only boil down to being totally random, but dammit, it’s still one of the best crafted fighting games for a reason. And again, that factoid didn’t come around because people found interesting engine exploits that served to change the meta-game up and supposedly “gave more depth”.

Yeah, I have to totally agree with you there. I want nothing else than Brawl to be a (relatively) balanced, well thought-out competitive fighter, but it certainly doesn’t seem like Sakurai is catering to that crowd, what with the emphasis on 1 Player mode and items and the like. I could bitch and moan about the way the Melee engine’s been tinkered with, but I’m definitely willing to give Brawl a shot. I just hope this new focus on air combos and infinite DI work out the way they’re supposed to.

If nothing else, I can just default to Guilty Gear for my 2D gaming fix.

Even so, I look at it differently.

I’d like to think that, even with the increased emphasis on items and story mode (something that Sakurai has wanted to do with the series from the jump), he still is seemingly giving the Vs. mode plenty of thought, time and effort, as well. And as long as neither end suffers, I don’t think there’s any thing relating to one group being “catered” to over the other. I mean, hey, if something like Guardian Heroes could have a sweet-ass Vs. mode (which could be altered to the player’s liking) as well as have a sweet-ass Story mode, I think there’s at least ONE precedent in this light. :wgrin:

To address your other concern about the engine being “tinkered” with: Gimpyfish from Smash Boards pretty much made it plain in his thread over there. Brawl != “Melee 2.0”. It’s something vastly different, while still having the same basic feel as its predecessors. And in that light, I think that’s good enough for me. I liked Melee fine, but I’m definitely ready for something different, and I would have been disappointed if I was made to wait 6 years for what was just going to be an update with more characters. They could have done that stuff in half the time, and probably back on the GC, still.

I mean, if fighting game series weren’t willing to try and re-invent themselves once in a while, we probably would still be playing the likes of SSF2T, Fatal Fury Special, KOF 95 and its ilk, as opposed to things like Street Fighter Zero and III, Real Bout, MOTW, the Marvel games and plenty of others that were basically evolutions or a different spin on what the older stuff started.

It’s okay to love the way things once were. Hell, I’ll admit that SSF2T and KOF98 are among my fave all-time fighting games. But even so, staying within the same place is not a good way to move forward. Besides, as Smash is pretty much the last bastion that the “fighting game” as a genre has in the mainstream, it can’t afford to stay in the past.

Well said. The changes made aren’t so much as “alterations” as it is a reinvention of the old. Unfortunately, that can mean that there are many negative surprises but also great new things to exploit, but that depends more on the players than the designers.

oh man the solid snake kirby has me rollin!

Ugh. I swear he has the sleaziest mustache…

Anyway, it seems so odd to finally see more of Sakurai’s own creation.

…Anyone find it odd that Deedee’s neutral B seems to be an inhale move as well?

Damn when I saw Diddy Kirby I thought it looked like Terry Bogard Kirby.

I think it’s safe to say this is the first update in a while we can actually get excited about.

Not really because he came back with inhale and flight in Kirby’s Adventure. More likely than not all it will be is inhale and spit and will probably do a lot more damage than Kirby would if he was doing it. And Dedede’s inhale is a bonus update because Sakurai never talked about his standard special move. So we get Kirby Hats and a Dedede update. I don’t wanna get that hype up yet. There’s still Friday.

i just wish they had given Kirby Snake’s mullet too, but oh well, it’s good to have a decent week of updates again

Do you think Kirby could’ve taken down Shadow Moses and Dead Cell singlehandedly?

Why did they only show one of kirby’s specials?

Because the one special has enough fun stuff about it to do an update.

Snake hat- FTW
Squirtle hat- for the laughs.

By the way… was Wario’s B move the fart? Because it would be hilarious if Kirby got the fart.

…feciciously

Doesn’t a Mexican Standoff require a minimum of 3 different parties?

Technically Raiden took down Dead Cell, not Snake.

Best update in a while.

However, I’m a bit bummed that Kirby only takes the default B move. I always thought that he should get other B moves and possibly other traits (a semi-perma sword, faster running speed) depending on the character he stole from.

My previous comment still stands.
