Some good tips in here
I actually play Gouken as an alt, he’s such a fun character. His damage like the lads have already mentioned essentially comes from you getting impatient and whiffing a special or getting focus crumpled (his focus is actually pretty good). A common Gouken pattern is if you have been baited and punished with a dive kick (these beat dp’s) Gouken players will always usually light kick demon flip into the grab on the next play. Akuma players also use a similar loop. They are banking on you blocking since you didn’t block the first time.
One thing I’m not sure if it’s been mentioned you can’t jump on Gouken from normal play. His fireball recovery is insane, he has st.fierce for big damage, EX tatsu for big damage, cr.fierce and also parry which will toss you across the screen. Good Gouken players are on point with their AA’s.
Stay grounded and spam CW
Besides being patient against Guile, is there any technical info to pass on to win this match? All his normals keep Fei out, but have a general rule for playing against Guile?
Need a Fei punish guide vs Guy. The ambiguous air assault I’m pretty clueless against. His slides and flip kick don’t seem jabxxrekka punishable either unless is space dependent.
Overall I never understood the character but at minimum would like to at least not be trolled and frame trapped to death.
Against guile:
for me, i like to keep within rekka range to discourage him from throwing sonic booms. EX CW and focus through projectiles if you have to.
once near guile, use cr.MK and cr.HP to avoid his backhand and outpoke him. Overhead is useful to reset his down-charge. The more you do this, along with cr.LP xx LP rekka pressure, the more tempting guile will be wanting to use his flash kick. Bait his flash kick with whiff cr.LP or cr.LP block string
make every crossup count if you get a knock down. also remember that safe jumps work against guile because his flash kicks are 4 frame startup
Against gouken and guy at mid-long range, you can buffer a DP motion by edging back and forth (left and right quickly) during footies and press K to execute a flame kick when you see gouken dive kick or guy flip kick.
Well for starters he can’t grab you in crouch block. Some tips against Guy -
- Use st.hk as your go to AA. It’s risk free and reaches out in front to catch the elbow drop. Dp is a bit risky due to whiff/trade.
- Guy is in serious trouble without meter. Hound him while he has none and bait the EX tatsu when he does. Bit like Rufus.
- Neutral jump HK will catch a lot of air to air and also punish a lot of his horizontal moves.
- Cr.mk goes under A LOT of his shit. Elbow drops, run moves etc etc. So buffer in some cr.lk after cr.mk. Experiment.
- Look for the shoulder, it’s not a true trap and also quite slow, you can Dp in between if you’re good.
- Caught in the mixer you can use LK/MK CW to counter frame traps and throws if you feel he’s disrespecting you
- Slide is punishable with cr.lp xx rekka
- Practice a back dash OS like cr.fierce - Guy players LOVE to back dash on wake up.
- If he wall bounces meet him in the air with J.fierce
- If he neutral jumps after a slide KD - this is a safe jump into throw (usually) - Don’t Dp here just late tech or BD.
Basic stuff but if your doing all those things I think it’s a tough match for guy. Again without meter he struggles a bit. In the neutral game cr.fierce and st.fierce are probably are best buttons like in a lot of matches.
Highland gave great advice. I’d like to add also his tatsu’s are free if he does them on wake up. I think his ex Izuna grabs regardless if standing or crouching, but regular Izunas just stay crouched and they’ll turn to elbow drop. His shadow kick after run is punishable heavy with rekkas or super. :lp: & :mp: Hozanto’s are safe, but HP & EX ones aren’t. Jab x rekkas. And use the OS cr :lk:/:hp: on the back run.
I’m almost certain the EX whiffs on crouch also but he can time it so that he grabs you on wake up frames if you’ve been knocked down. The only way out is to hit a low normal on WU if I remember. Someone could try that in the training room for confirmation.
Got a friend whose a forum dweller…but not a poster. Asked him if there was something I could look up and he asked for Gen. Anyone have anything on how bad we body Gen?(After all our EVO champ tier list says Fei is number 1)Or is there a hidden cache of Gen matchup around the forum I’m missing?
I think Fei probably beats Gen because Fei can punish hands with mp rekka (or EX) even sometimes on hit because the hands whiff which is Gen’s main tool at mid range. Basically Fei just out footsie’s Gen in the ground game. Cr.lp xx rekka blows up a lot of his approach.
I think we were talking about it in the Video thread a few months ago.
EDIT: Fei’s not even close to number one. Akuma and Cammy are much more well rounded.
Personally I think Xian baited CapCom into nerfing Fei lol He says he #1 but he bopped Mago twice and Fuudo all in the last CanadaCup? What Fei do you lose to? lmao…speaking of last CC you seen Xian kept hands out longer and it would stuff Fei rekkas 50% of the time. Was Mago using light rekkas?
