So…
Just guard in SCV is extremely similar to 3S parry. Unlike GI it stops unblockables and supers. Its very powerful and Its also meterless.
Guard Impact costs meter because it unlike JG it stops all hit levels. In addition to that it doesn’t require as much precision in its timing as JG does.
IMO, I think they were trying for a system seen in some ArcSys games where you had 2 defensive systems in one game, one meterless but harder to do and one that’s easier, but requires meter (i.e. Instant Block and Faultless Defense in GG).
Urien did that on 3S and it ended being perfectly fair and very fun. Even in the receiving end, I would rather to deal with that, which is limited to very few characters and situational setups instead of having by offensive pressure option selected by invincible reversals which almost every character have, some without meter.
Nice to see pros speaking in favor of guard crush. It may resonate within Capcom since the idea had already crossed their minds while making USF4.
So being bored this morning I wanted to throw out the top 20 characters as voted by eventhub readers recently for SF5 cast members
and matching it with the top 20 overall popular characters from a poll Capcom-unity hosted back in SFxTk days.
And the characters that match in both polls listed in top 20 are follows (I left out Ryu and Chun-Li for obvious reasons):
Ken
Akuma
Cammy
Sakura
Karin
Juri
Q
R. Mika
Cody
Poison
Dudley
Makoto
Throw in Ryu and Chun for already being in making 14 characters; leaves room for a new character and Charlie IF only 16 will be featured.
Those left over that aren’t in both top 20s:
Alex, Urien, Oro, Sean, Eagle, Sodom, Birdie, Ingrid, Bison, Sagat, Guile, Zangeif
Actually makes a fairly diverse cast if Capcom really pays attention to polls and things, thoughts? I can see myself using 5-6characters, at least until I break it down to my normal Main, Sub and third wheeler that I hardly play, lol!
That list of 14 is heavily rushdown oriented. You’ll notice there isn’t really a dedicated zoner or dedicated grappler character. Closest you get is hybrids (Juri/Poison and Q/R.Mika) otherwise it’s pretty much just in your face rushdown or a shoto and Chun who might be rushdown in SFV depending on how she is changed, she can vary a lot game by game whether rushdown or just footsies / zoning.
Note he only did ones that are in BOTH Eventhubs poll AND Capcom’s poll.
Capcom’s poll has Ryu, Ken, Akuma as top 3 most popular characters in that order. Mostly thanks to the west. In Japan Ken/Akuma were 9 and 10 respectively while Ryu was actually #2 behind Karin.
Also you might like Eventhubs supposed popularity usage for SF4 better than their poll results.
#1 Ryu #2 Cody #3 Juri #4 Ken #5 Cammy #6 Evil Ryu #7 Rose #8 Dudley #9 Sakura #10 M. Bison #11 Akuma #12 Chun Li
Note that Eventhub’s “popularity list” isn’t so much “how much you like these characters” (as Capcom-Unity’s poll was) but "how often you use these characters with it scored based on “Main, Secondary, Third”
I just find it interesting how the same names pop up so often. like for that top 12; I could throw in E. Ryu and Rose.
other then that it’s a similar list. I pretty much assume the characters people want to see are the characters they use; like me screw anyone besides Chun Li and Juri XD
I for one though am sorry and nothing against any E. Ryu fans; but I feel he is a waste of character slot. I say just combine E. Ryu and Ryu’s movesets. I’m pretty sure Ryu can do an Axe kick without being all angry GRRRR! lol AXE KICK!
I prefer SFxTK’s Donkey kick but anyway back on topic - carry on.
I actually am pretty okay with this list. The only ones from the top 12, and leftovers in the list that I do NOT want to see return are: Cammy, Dudley, and Zangief, and I’m on the fence about Akuma (for now).
Minus those 3, both lists combined is very similar to the one I theorized on pages back.
And this is why random peoples should never pretend to do the cast
I like the cast to keep being various with some older age characters, huge power-grapplers, ugly/strange freaks and so on… that’s Street Fighter
If you left internet people chose the cast become a bunch of my waifu + few of cool male chars
In b4 anybody “but Dudley/Q are in”, fuck it is still easy to see
It look like a shitty DoA cast (with less boobs, wich actually kill the reason to exist of a doa-like cast), not a SF one
Tsk. Tsk. Unless Ryu is truly angry and succumbs to the Satsui no Hadou, he is psychologically INCAPABLE of doing that Axe Kick. It’s too mean! The best he can get out when he’s in a good mood is the donkey kick…
Community popularity lists are enlightening and all, but I think right now they’re pretty meaningless for SF5. Unlike a crossover game like SFxT, Capcom has always built the starting cast of every SF based on their own choices more than popularity.
Once the game is out and everyone’s playing it, then they’ll look at the community feedback and use it to plan updates. So those lists will be relevant much later. But for the initial game, all we can do is hope they have some good choices.
I really don’t like that list. I mean, I like all of these characters, but I feel it would make for a bad roster for a fighing game. It doesn’t matter if these are people’s favourites, I think there needs to be more variety even at the cost of not making everyone 100% happy.
Lore wise, there are waaay too many females in that list, and it lacks the “main bad guy” aside from Akuma. If Juri is there, then you have to put at least two other villains in there.
Character appeal wise, I feel like every game needs at least one “weird” character, one “huge” character, one ninja and one obscure, demonic-like character. Akuma kinda fits the role, but I feel it’s still too human-like. Q is “weird”, but not “crazy weird” like for example Necro or Twelve.
Gameplay-wise, I agree there’s too much rushdown and not enough zoners and grapplers. It also lacks an unorthodox, never-seen-before character, like Viper or Fuerte (please don’t put Fuerte in the game Capcom, it was just an example).
It’s ALMOST exactly 50% female, I’d say that’s actually pretty good. There is no lore reason for there NOT to be as many female characters as male, just a design preference.
What if SF5 goes the “unplayable boss” route? SF4 had that originally before the console version.
