STREET FIGHTER II #1 thoughts!

(The post that was previously here sucked. This is my second, more thoughtful attempt at an issue critique.)

Critique of issue 1:

THE GOOD

  • Finally, a new issue of SF!!! It’s about time…

  • The art was great, as it always is. (A few guest artists whose style I’m just not a fan of aside…)

  • Some insight as to how Bison (and Rose) got their powers.

THE BAD

  • Dee Jay and Blanka’s stories just plain getting glossed over. Dee Jay and Blanka should be back by issue 3 or 4, not in issue 1 as if deprogramming them was easy. “Hey, we were brainwashed and now we’re not! Isn’t that great?” (Side note: I don’t mind Dee Jay busting out with some Capoeira. He’s a musician, so it makes sense. Just don’t forget to have him do his specials. )

  • A whole bunch of characters were thrown in the issue who didn’t really do anything. Chun Li, Gen, Yun, Yang, Guile, & Ken didn’t really do anything. The issue should have been about Ryu’s visit to Dhalsim, Cammy leaving Delta Red, and Bison’s resurrection/flashback only, leaving more pages for each.

THE UGLY

  • That little guy in Delta Red’s face when he said “Indubitably”. WTF? Is he fighting the Satsui no Hadou too?

  • Naked Bison. There are just some sides of SF I don’t want to see… Ewwww…

SHIT! I did end up forgetting…i’ll be getting it asap if it’s sill available…:shake:

This was a very impressive first issue. Great variety of story and artwork. I was exceptionally please with Dhalsim and his stage being present.
The intro to Bison’s origens/Rose’s mentor was AWESOME. Great work in character design and storytelling. Thanks Udon!

Ginzu’s WTF face

Hey all,

I must apologize for Ginzu’s “indubitably” face, If you picked up the raw edition i made a comment about it, but i dunno if it got edited out or anything. I dunno what i was thinking when i was drawing it, but i think that at the time i had just picked up the new Gorillaz album, and felt the urge to draw a Hewlitt inspired face. Im sorry if it was kinda out of no where…No more selfish endeavours!

but overall im glad you enjoyed the book, through the good the bad and the ugly, and i sincerely hope you will stay along for the ride!

Alvin

“Dirty Harry” is my shit off that album…
Stay on your grind, chief…

DA GAME agrees with everything you said.Yeah naked Bison was ugly.DG would rather have naked Rose

After a week of reading spoilers and such, I finally went out a got an issue. I’m certainly glad I did! It’s worth every penny. Can’t wait to get the RAWs!

Thoughts:
The art style used for the Akuma/Gouken battle worked really well. It did a good job of showing of the intensity of Akuma. I know some people complained aobut him saying “Shun Goku Satsu” the way he did, but I think he did say it like that when he blew up M. Bison in his Alpha 3 ending.

I love the way Akuma wipes Goukens blood on the walls so ritualisticly. It was beautiful.

Anyone else notice how Sakura shows up in the Character Select and has no lines or appearances thoughout the issue? That look on her face when Ryu first faces Adon is pretty comical, though.

I loved the Bison/Rose thing. All I will say is that it was told perfectly. Answer question by creating more questions, Perfect!

Did anyone else notice how big Bison was walking down that corridor with Vega? I know he’s big, but he’s not Zangief!

I know everyone notices Ginzu’s freakish expression, but how come nobody notices his blob-thing crying when Cammy told them she was leaving.

I love where the Ken/Guile thing is headed. There personalities are so different, you can get a lot of cool and funny stories out of them and the ladies.

Sagat emerges! I love how Sagat always seems to show up dramatically.

Ryu has hands down the best moment in the entire run of the comic. Instead of being his usual self, he aggressively challenges Sagat. He dosen’t hesitate or anything. Quite impressive.

Things Change. I want to fight you here and now. If you want your rematch, now’s the time Sagat.”

It’s way better than his usual “If you want a fight, you’ve got one.” thing he usually does. Character development at its finest!

Finally, I think Rival Schools was pretty cool. It’s probably mean no more Cheap Shots, which I liked. At least Rey now has his own 22- page monthly extravaganza.

I guess thats it for now, one question though: When’s Fei-Long coming back?

40 pages!

Anywho. I enjoyed this issue. Ginzu’s face was a bit odd, as everyone’s pointed out, but otherwise I really liked it. It was nice to see some of the characters in new clothing too, didn’t really expect that for some reason.

Bison’s origin was pretty intriguing, definately curious about his master and how what happened affected Rose.

Good stuff.

glad you guys are digging Rival Schools… just wait 'til the next backup!!! you’ll be amazed what I managed to fit into 4 pages >:]

and then of course, 40-page solid fighting comics in 2006 when #1 drops!!!

Arn’s job on the prologue was siiiick. So awesome stylistically, and very fitting for that sequence. Loved the Rose/Bison origin story part too. Very satisfying to see a backstory for how they are linked. Great job guys!

Great to see you posting here at SRK!

Hi
after a long abstence from this board, here is my opinion on #1:

I liked it!

By the way, have someone noticed in the player select pages, under Eliza’s name it was written “Ken’s fiancee” not “Ken’s wife” as it should be now.

And does it just seems so, but in the 20 year flashback of Bison, he is much thinner as in the now-version? (Yet i am missing the thin Bison)

I hope in one of the future issues there will be an other flashback to the first SF-Tournament, where we can see all the fighters from SF1…

greets

Great work, Ko, Sui-Chong, Lee, and everybody else.

So…Eliza > Gouki on Ken, eh?

LOL, Gorillaz, I totally see that now. It’s still weird but at least now I know it didn’t come out of nowhere.

Nice of you to clear it up personally. Keep up the 99% selfless work!

Finally Us kiwis get our SF 2 Lovin’ I got my comic today.

I must say that this issue was pants creamingly awesome!

Dhalsim is AWESOME! Avlin Lee is kicking ass!

Congrats Erik Ko and co. Keep up the good work!

My thoughts:

Great, great issue. The best yet. Why? Because it felt like a full issue, rather than half an issue as it was when we were getting the backstories. I really kept turning the page expecting for the main story to end with half the comic pages still left, but this one never ended. It was great, a full story throughout with a great Rival Schools at the end.

I know the reasons for the original backstories, and I know we’ve ran up and down that road in the past, but believe me - this is the way to go. I’m sure it kills poor Alvin though to have to draw a lot more to make an issue now however.

Which brings me to my next point: Alvin Lee is not an artist, he’s a magician. The man was born to draw SF, and his knowledge of the source material never fails to shine through in his artwork. There’s so many little things in the artwork that you’d only catch if you have knowledge of the game - Chun’s hcb + k move during that street fight comes to mind in this issue. Great stuff.

I’d also put my two cents in for the book to focus more on the core Ryu/Ken/Chun Li/Guile arc, but that’s hardly a complaint, because I love what I’m reading, only a suggestion. New characters should be brought in only when they’re seen from Ryu/Ken/Chun Li/Guile’s perspective, or ties in with their arc. And to a lesser extent Akuma/Bison/Vega (claw)/Sagat’s perspective.

One thing I have to disagree with the previous posters though is I LOVE the slower pace. When this book first came out I was worried that it was moving too fast, but I love this pace now. It makes the fights that much more meaningful and anticipated with such build up. Who want be at the comic shop to pick up next issue to see that Ryu/Sagat tussle?

Oh and one more thing - loved the anime-ish “tear drop” over Ken’s head when he was talking to Eliza.

-The Kid

the slower pace is good but i found that this issue was just a transitional story, setting up future issues. it seemed like the issue was split up into several chapters…

chapter 1: akuma kills gouken
chapter 2: ryu travels to india
chapter 3: bison kills his master
chapter 4: bison is reborn
chapter 5: delta red
chapter 6: chun-li meets gen
chapter 7: eliza and julia set up a dinner date
chapter 8: ryu meets sagat

only one ‘chapter’ follows on from a previous one in the same issue (Ryu’s). i guess people can say past and present bison stories can be related too seeing as how they are back to back.

it just seems like eight short stories fitted together - 5, 6 and 7 can be pretty much in any order.

as i said - a transitional piece but I did like the character development. i am glad that dee jay and blanka have had their de-brainwashing glossed over. one page is all it needed. any more and other pages in this comic would have to be sacrificed as delta red aren’t likely to retun for a good while. some times, a section of a story is so obvious and that it doesn’t need to be included to show what happens - the reader can accurately guess what went on behind the scenes themselves.

so now that you said goodbye to Delta Red, what is Ginzu’s ghost thing called? more selfish endeavors by creating it?

EDIT and did anyone notice that the non-game characters in the rival schools part are actually custom characters from the U.S. game?

Picked it up yesterday and it’s great!

The lack of Street Fighter comics in recent months is single-handedly responsible for me not showing up at my local comic store in forever.

and naturally, I had a pile of Green Lantern books waiting for me when I did go yesterday :razzy:
