Street Fighter I info

As for Gen and Retsu thing: I don’t think anybody would dispute than Gen is one of the most powerful charcters. The plot guide has him borderline Tier 2/tier 3 (of 10), above Chun, Guile, and it’s well known that he can pretty much hang with Akuma. For Retsu, we don’t have any evidence apart from that he may have beaten Dan. And since he was the first character most people meet in SF1, I reckon he’s meant to be pretty low. (consider also Gen was usually the last character before Thailand)

Exactly. Even if they are both supposed to be called Mike, it might just be that the SF1 Mike was a slight copy of Tyson, and the SF2 Bison was also a copy of Tyson by a different group of people (but possibly a 2nd attempt, thus a different copy).

Besides, look at the official age for M Bison: 1969 would make him 18 in SF1, which is impossible looking at the portraits (in fact, he looks older there than in the games set 6 years afterwards). The images speak for themselves- I’d say there was absolutely no way they are meant to be the same

I thought Eagle was the last dude you fought before Thailand.

Does anyone else think Mike kinda looks like Bill Cosby?

I just thought of something, we are trying to find secrets to a reality that doesn’t even exist. Like piecing together pictures like they were parts of a puzzle. And if we just look hard enough we will see something that even the creators didn’t know they put in!But there is nothing to discover because nothing was actually hidden in the first place.

Personally I like to think of Street fighter I as a snap shot of the time it was made - 1987. The fighters were inspired by martial arts movies of the time, I always thought the original Ryu reminded me of ‘The Karate kid’ and Ken was like the ‘Blonde Guy’ in the same movie. (Daniel Laruso’s Rival…I think his name was Bobby) It is unlikely Capcom will ever releash any additional info on these characters than what they have already, and even if they do it seems like it will contradict what was originally created just to force the pieces of the puzzle to fit. For myself the original Street Fighter holds enough charm that it does not need to be defined.

Why would they have two black boxers named Mike? That’s like having two japanese shotokan fighters named Ryu.

One was named Mike, the other was named M.Bison. Capcom took care to have the name under the portrait in Street Fighter II differ from the one in Street Fighter I.

The last opponent you fight before Thailand is determined by which nation you choose when starting the game.

Yeah I think he kind of looks like him as well.

You can enable/disable the nation-start selection in the dip-switch options of the coin-op in some revisions. Other doesn’t have that selection, just like the PC-Engine adaptations or the computer adaptations (Spectrum, Amstrad CPC…)

By the way, if you want SF1 pics, you can get them from the arcade flyers (http://www.arcadeflyers.com/?page=flyerdb&name=Street+Fighter&year=&manu=&source=url])

The M does officially stand for Mike you know…

Yes, but that was MUUUUUCH later, I believe during the time of the CVS Series Capcom decided to bite the bullet and finally say his first name was Mike. (Capcom of Japan that is. Capcom USA still calls him Balrog.) They still however have not stated weither he and Mike from SF1 are the same person. Yes, it may be silly, but until Capcom of Japan states that they are one in the same, we still can not assume that they are. In All About Capcom it states how M.Bison is similar to Mike and that is it. Until another Official Capcom Book is released that states HE IS MIKE FROM SF1, we can’t say they are one and the same.

i remember being able to play ken in the 1 player game… but from what ive heard he didnt participate in the sf1 tournament cause he was busy winning the north american/american tourney (which is where he supposedly met eliza).

Yes but I would think that if Capcom wanted it to be obvious that they were the same person they would have called him Mike Bison not M.Bison. After all they couldn’t change the fact that Mike was called Mike in SF1 and Mike Bison is obviously a Mike Tyson parody.

Uh, it was earlier than any CVS series. I have the Japanese PS1 version of Zero 3 (1998) and in the manual, while his name is written out in Roman letters as M. Bison as usual, the katakana pronunciation is written as “Maiku Baison”.

So I was off by like, what, 2 years? - CVS Series started in 2000 - it was still like 7 years too late.
