I do understand that most of us here (including myself) are big fans of Capcom’s art style. However, I would like to ask everyone to please respect the guests that has also spend their time in making the back up stories. It might to be a style you particularly like, but they are all very respectible professionals that has each established their own style.
The fact that we are indeed going for a different style with different back up guest is to hopefully diversify the audience too, to introduce more people to this great universe of Street Fighter that we love.
Bear in mind that at this very moment, we still have a lot of people out there (retailers and customers) who has no clue what UDON, Capcom, or SF is, but they are picking up the book just because of J Scott Campbell’s Cover, or Adam Warren’s art…
I am being very open and frank with you guys. I have nothing to hide as I consider you guys being part of the whole success of this SF book. But the fact that the initial order numbers of SF#2 has sold 5000 more copies of the guest cover EACH to the UDON cover, it shows you how the retailers think…
Not that it is a bad thing that we sell more copies, but in my opinion, I always thought the numbers of each cover ordered should be quite competible.
I was a little bothered, as well, that Vega just dominated Honda. While I do think Vega should win that fight, I also think it should have been closer. Maybe they get to meet again.
Another thing: I though Chun-Li’s father had been captured when she was really, really young. Even before her teens.
Either way these are small quirks and the issue rocked!!! I’m in it for the long haul. All the way to SF3 when my favorite character appears: Alex!!!
man, the art work in this comic is gorgeous. tsang and the rest of the Udon crew have the drawing in this comic down on lock!
as for warren, i respect his style. its different, in a good way. every artist has their style of drawing. that is what makes them different/unique from the others.
i am not going to lie, when i heard that Udon was going to make a street fighter comic, i was like…“who’s Udon?” i wasnt familiar with Udon’s work. but now that i am familiar with your work and seeing that you’ll are doing a great job turning the best fighting game into a comic, i see this comic going to good places.
keep up the good work!
i know this question prolly has been asked a million times, but is Udon planning on having posters out on Street Fighter? I am saving a place on my wall in hopes of one. thanks.
Just got issue 2 (thank you Motor City Comic Con). Gotta say, It feels more like SF than 1 did. The Shinryuken…Vega…the Gouken vs. Akuma fight…it was all incredible. Yeah, Adam Warren’s style was a bit strange, but it was better than I expected. Nice work, and I expect great things of issue 3!
Name a game where E. Honda gets dominated by Vega. I can’t think of one. In fact most of the time it’s usually the other way with Honda dominating Vega.
I find it interesting how Honda always gets stuck with the dumb storylines (Street Fighter Movie Honda vs Dhalsim also a good example). Why? Because he’s fat. Since he’s fat he must also be stupid. And since he’s fat and stupid, he should always lose for no reason at all. Lame.
lled78, did you have money riding on that fight or something? You sound like somebody who is down $50 or something.
Anyway, I don’t think that there is really anything wrong with Vega taking that fight. He is Shadaloo’s #1 one assassin after all, not to mention one of the fastest people in all of SF. How was Honda supposed to hit him? Perhaps if he hadn’t been so aggressive…
Honda was never the most storyline-centric character in either SF2 or SFA3, so I highly doubt any other media would do the same. At best, I guess he’d get a rematch with Vega and/or get to accompany Ryu like in the SF2 animated movie.
“Japan’s #1 Warrior” getting pwned by Vega that easily though… Vega is supposed to be incredibly powerful, storyline-wise, but I can see why people would be pissed off that Honda would get beated so easily, considering that every character has fans and that even if he lacks fans that like him for his storyline, Honda especially has a decent amount of gameplay fans. While you expect there to be really powerful characters in a story (such as the main heros and the main villains of course), it’s sad that in anything but a fighter, there will be characters that are almost guaranteed to be relegated to “everyone’s else’s bitch” roles.
…when I think about it, when the opening for such roles exist, and as stated, they’re guaranteed to be filled, the ‘fatter’ characters are almost always some of the ones that fill such roles. First Birdie and now E. Honda. Yeesh.
sigh, the problem with Honda is that he was attacking. He woulda won if he turtled. he shoulda sat in the corner and RC headbutted Vega to death.
anyways Honda better get some revenge sometime down the line. one character completely killing another like that doesn’t make sense. every character should have some chance against any other character storyline-wise, with the exception of bosses like Akuma or Bison or someone like that.
Adam Warren’s art is a little wierd, but it’s always good to have differing art styles in the backups each issue. and besides it’s only a few pages you can put up with it. the main artists however are doing a REALLY good job. all of Udon’s artists are really good in everything that they do, Soldier X and Sentinel and especially this.
Quite understandable. I’m glad that the backups will be there each month (and Cheap Shots). That was a tad of a knee jerk reaction to the art. On the flip side, I Warren’s cover more than the comic so it could be just the way the fight was done. -Shrugs-
I just acquired issues 1 and 2 today, and I’m quite happy with how they turned out.
Actually, I liked that part, that’s where you see difference between simple Ryu and cocky, showoff Ken.
Also, Sakura being revealed as a E.Honda fangirl (sort of) before her Ryu fangirl days was a real kicker. Another unexpected moment for me was in the side story, where Chun Li used a throw on Cammy’s leg.
PS I love the ‘cheap shots’ shorts at the end of the comics. Keep up the good work, udon
Yeh I totally agree. I’m actually looking forward to the backup stories. It’s nice to see the different styles portrayed by different artists. Diversity = very cool.
Great issue udon. I particularly like the colours used for the Gouken/Akuma fight. Woww…
One thing that caught me was how Vega’s claws disappears before n after the fight. Nothing biggie… I guess its detatchable.
After that I started re-reading issue 1 again. Oh shit… I actually missed the scene where Cammy is spying over the restaurant. That’s pretty obvious haha. Also, after closer inspetcion, you can actually see Chunli eating in the same restaurant, sitting across Ryu.
Just got #2 and I’m really impressed. Being a storyline scrub, I still can’t avoid being extremely happy with the choices you’ve made. Everything seems logical, although I still can’t figure out when in the storyline this is supposed to take place.
If I can make one request though: please have an editorial at some point where you acknowledge the differences between Japanese and American names (Shotokan/Ansatsuken, Vega/Bison/Balrog, Charlie/Nash, etc).
I liked the idea with Sakura being a Honda fangirl. I mean, Ryu isn’t exactly the most famous fighter around so why should she be obsessed with him?
Also liked how Cammy didn’t have a real name. I guess you’re going to let her get a name once she leaves Shadaloo (which would mean that she was baptized in England, though not born there).
Not a fan of Warren (ugh!) but whatever makes the comic sell, I guess. As long as the regular art stays the same, I won’t mind.
Oh, and I’m getting two copies of each issue. One to read and one to keep in minty-mint condition. Hope that helps. I think I’ll try and promote this comic among other hardcore Swedish SF fans as well, many of them might be interested.
I’m new here at shoryuken.com. I think it is really cool that this site has a forum specifcally for the SF comic. Here’s my two cents on issue two.
So far I’m really impressed with the art quality of this series. Personally, out of the 3 issues released to date (0,1, and 2), two has the best art. The colour usage is excellent and the drawings are sharp and clean.
I found it refreshing how some characters are drawn wearing different clothes like Ken and Chun Li. I also like how Cammy has high tech gadgets to use while spying. I thought the Ryu and Ken casual conversation about Eliza to be a nice touch. It shows the normal-everyday person side of those two (and it shows that Ryu does notice women!). The Vega/Balrog battle against Honda and Sakura’s cameo was well paced and entertaining.
Although Adam Warren’s new style isn’t really my cup of tea, it is distinct. I know Warren can do “normal” looking manga drawings as I’ve seen some of his earlier work on, I think, a book called Gen 13.
The Vega/Balrog meeting Ken cliffhanger really worked on me. I was almost disappointed when I noticed the “to be continued” message.
Needless to say, I’m eagerly looking forward to issue three!
