i want in

I’m in :smokin:

In all seriousness though, I always hated the straight edge movement, even when I didn’t do drugs. It promotes fear and ignorance among people who’ve never done any drugs.

Refraining from drugs for personal reasons is great. Starting a movement about it leads to people saying things like this:

With the movement comes the attempt to recruit, the exclusion and alienation of drug users, and a general overstepping of what comes along with not doing drugs. So you don’t do drugs, cool, but hey I can take care of myself, and people who think that they need to save the world from drugs generally don’t know what they are talking about.

And will live in ignorant bliss until they try pot :smokin:

Also, straight edge always made me think of nicknames like “Math-letes!” and “Super-speller!!”, i.e. taking something not cool (doing math, not smoking cigarettes like Bruce Willis, not having sex) and trying to glorify it and make it “cool”. Kinda how cool kids ditch school but “being your own person” by obeying your teacher “makes you an individual, which is doubly cool-cool-neato”

My 21 comment could have just as easily been 22 or 23. It has nothing to do with legal drinking age, just maturity. Kids are stupid. Most are, anyway. I’ve been sxe since I was 15, same with a couple friends (and we still are). As for the dozens of douchebag, trendy, so-called hardcore kids (the kind that wore all the band shirts but never been to a show in their lives), they fell off. The loudest and proudest usually fell the hardest. So at this point, unless you’ve been sxe for like, 10 years, I just don’t care.

I’m just not too keen on the idea of defining a lifestyle by things you don’t do.

I was never too big on Trial. Hellfest ‘01 was the highlight of my show-going. Main event was Earth Crisis’ last performance (at the time). Literally a mountain of people piled on stage during the last singalong. It was like 120 degrees, 100% humidity in there. But it was awesome.

“One doesn’t need to shoot themselves in the face with a shotgun to know its effects.”

Just something someone once said to me that made sense. Though I myself have experienced drugs, cigarettes, and alcohol firsthand and made my decision based on the huge negative effects they all had on my life, I still wouldn’t knock someone who has never done any of those things since information about their effects is easily attainable. But you do gain a deeper understanding from firsthand use without a doubt.

I think that’s a stupid idea. I mean what? You are not going to allow people without red shoes around you? Does that mean you hate people if they don’t wear red shoes?

If this clan is based online, then that’s pretty dumb too, what if they are not wearing any shoes? Or should they wear red shoes while they play online?

I think wearing red shoes should be a choice, not something you peer pressure people into wearing. If I wanna wear red shoes, then I’ll just wear red shoes. It’s just something you choose to do yourself, not a label!

Excuse me while I put on my sandals and play some SF4.

I don’t remember what you said in your video, but I don’t really see why you want to reward people for their lifestyle choices, in this case. If someone hasn’t drank or smoked and is your age, then they probably already have good motivators not, like personal values (e.g. religion) or their own personal experiences with those substances.

Apollo just wanted to make his point about this thread on Straight Edge Gaming. Why have a lifestyle or choice be associated with a video game? It’s not necessary.

It sounds like you suffer from something I’ve heard referred to as the “I am the universe” fallacy. Essentially that you experience something one way so you think everyone else does too.

It’s cool that you don’t do drugs, but life isn’t a competition and you’re not winning (read: better) against people that do or have.

I’ve done drugs before and I benefited from doing them. In general I advocate that people don’t do drugs because the reasons they do them are often harmful and they’re not solving the problems they’re looking to solve with them.

The common view is that drugs alter your state of mind, well, you’re choosing to do the drug so you’re changing your state of mind. The intent, as with all things, is the important part here. If you drink to forget about your problems, well, that’s going to be harmful. If you know how a drug is going to effect you then you can make an informed decision about whether you want to do it or not.

That said, of course being dependent on any drug is harmful, but then that isn’t a necessity of doing drugs.

If you want to help people, find the intent. If drugs are hurting them then it’s just a symptom. It doesn’t really sound to me that you’re abstaining from drugs out of compassion though. Seems like you want to feel like you’re somehow winning the game of life.

Yeah trial and EC come from pretty opposite ends of the spectrum musically and message-wise. The new album wasn’t bad in comparison to the two before it. At burning fight I got lucky enough to see Unbroken play a reunion set and it was absolutely amazing. Check out Disembodied if you like EC since Disembodied is heavy as fuck. Converge was pretty amazing as well. The entire lineup was Gdlk as fuck but Trial was just beyond all else.

Just a list for anyone who wants to check them out. Not all of these are edge but all are amazing.

I take it back the straight edge scene is a great idea.

It saves me time since anyone rallying against drugs (as opposed to just, not doing them) is someone so closeminded I wouldn’t enjoy their company anyways.

And that joke just flew over your head.

real talk the fat kid got the point out there, cause for every 10 people that disagree and want to troll he gets one cat that agrees…

thanks for keeping the thread at top,…

Shai Hulud with Chad on vocals is awesome.

you guys are all pussies. :smokin:

This goes to some bitch ass guy named Squirrel or something. If you really wanted to be straight edge you would #1 stop eating meat. #2 stop fucking with dairy products, they are so filled with hormones pumped into cows that its harmful in the longterm. #3 stop playing violent video games #4 stop going online to defend being straight edge, you’re wasting valuable power. #5 stop swearing. That is really straight edge. I’ve met people like that, until then you are just a bitchmade imposter. Now I’m going to crack open another beer and toast to your perpetual virginity. oh and btw fuck your church

This sounds more boring then being forced to listen to Gorden Brown doing the queens speach.

Man, I love SRK

Don’t want to drink or anything, then don’t. But trying to make a big statement out of something as trivial as not drinking is just a waste of time. Nobody else cares.

Same here. I don’t drink, smoke, or do drugs.

Cool story bro.

… But let’s get to the point. Lock/delete this thread. It’s in the “fighting game discussion”. While he is talking about something game-related, we are not discussing fighting games here.

And for the hell of it, I will add my opinion: I don’t do drugs, smoke or drink. And I hate straight edge people. The moment you start/join a group so you can separe yourself from others based on preconceived notions of people you don’t even know and what you judge to be right, you are being extremely arrogant (and you look ridiculous with your group’s associated clothing, to boot). You’re not God and right/wrong doesn’t exist. Shut up, be humble, get along with different people (with individuals) and respect them.

For the sake of definition too, let me quote Wikipedia:

  • Wait. How convenient. The part that mentioned about them refraining from sex for non-reproductive purposes and their stance against homossexuality disappeared. Nevermind.
