Story Mode Discussion: Universes Clash Once Again

Akuma is becoming the Cid or more likely Gilgamesh from Final Fantasy to Capcom’s Games!

Sometimes i wish MVCI storyline is directly ties after Spider-Verse and BNGI’s Tekken 7, involving Akuma’s presence & how Capcom Game Spidey survived from Morlun’s life force absorption. Not to mention to expect Tekken hero’s Jin Kazama somehow plays a vital role in MVCI stories in turn

That’s just complicating things waaaay too much for a consumer. I may be letting a tiny bit of bias in since I didn’t like Spiderverse, but think of it from the standpoint of someone who didn’t play Tekken 7 or read the book. They’re going to be absolutely confused and Capcom wouldn’t take time to adapt part of a story the focuses on Spider man vs the inheritors when it’s got to set up all of the Marvel Universe merging with the Capcom universes.

Also throwing in Jin would not work and would make a legal nightmare. Crossovers can get complicated enough, but going to Namco, getting legal rights in order just to briefly use Jin wouldn’t be worth the costs. Namco is going to want to be featured more promptly and I doubt Capcom would want to dish out a ton of money for what amounts to a possible cameo.

You want to keep things nice and neat. That’s why it’s a reboot, they want people who may be picking up a VS game for the first time ever to be able to play the game, get the story from there and move on.

That’s a bunch of unnecessary continuity and only serve to confuse things. Capcom ain’t going for Crisis on Infinite Earths.

If anything, it’s closer to Secret Wars with the whole worlds colliding and combining thing going on.

Yeah. Secret Wars seems like the most likely direction. It also would mean Doom is confirmed, which I like.

So do you guys think the story is going to be on the more original side or based on some of the crossover comics Marvel released in the past?

I’d speculate but I know fuck all about the Mahvel universes, so no idea what would the Capcom characters be doing

All you need to know about Secret Wars is that Doom fucks shit up by creating a space-time anomaly (incursion) that causes parallel universes to merge, essentially destroying them (the main universes it focuses on are the main and Ultimate versions of Earth). The new merged universe was designed by Doom, so it was up to the Marvel heroes (and villains) to set things straight.

With this kind of story, you can easily replace one of the universes with a Capcom one and change around some of the details and BOOM! Story Mode…

Isn’t this what was supposed to happen in UMVC3?

Kinda, but nothing was really explained all that well. I’m assuming this time around the story will be more fleshed out.

I doubt theyd just ctrl+v an existing comic storyline thatd be lazy as fucc…

Using Secret Wars would be the best way to present a story for this imo. The laziest thing they can do with this game story is make it Contest of Champions.

Original. I can see some elements of other tales coming in, but focusing on adapting one story too strongly limits things severely especially for the Capcom characters. If you rely too much on the Secret Wars element, you have to handle the whole build up with the Beyonders, all the multiversal Molecule Men, Doom literally becoming God, etc. and like I said in a past post, that’s just not a good way to get newcomers involved.

I’d personally make a quick and dirty sequel to Marvel Superheroes. You have a short recap saying the Gems were previously held by a madman named Thanos, the heroes stopped him, but something went out of sync and cracked the multiverse and in an attempt to fix things, someone didn’t read the fine print on the reality gem and now, the universes are crashing into each other rather than being fixed up and parallel.

This way, you have a quick round up, introduce the stakes and let the story build at the player’s pace.

Capcom can forgo the Secret War element all together if they use Miss America Chavez. Opening portals between realities is her main power. She’s also a powerhouse so she would make for a fine playable character.

Interesting! I know nothing about her; Seen her around though, at first I thought she was just super strong, so she teleports or she can take people with her? Cause in the footage we’ve seen the worlds are literally crashing into each other. Is that something she can cause?

She kicks opens holes in reality and uses them as portals. She can use them to teleport people across the multiverse. A small dose on how her powers work

Another thing I’m interested in is the various combination’s we’ll see in the story. Since it’s cinematic, I’m guessing the teams will be preselected. There’s so many ways they can go about this.

This is more of a fresh introduction of a conflict. Probably using default versions of marvel characters like disney infinity and contest of the champions. While Capcom can introduce characters beyond origins that will never complicate things like they did with Son-son in MVC2 that is not the original Son-son in that appeared in previous games with the same name. Even the likes of Amigo, Ruby Heart, Abyss, Cyber Akuma, Shadow lady, Shadow, Cyborg Nash and Shadow Jin.

Capcom could simply make the infinity Gems to be lost or transported in different reality because of an accident or a villains agenda? Thanos? Ultron? Or a desire by villain to merge to a different reality use its resource advantage.

Or the gems to be mistaken by Powerstone characters as a powerstone or a find treasure by a pirate character from Capcom side. Or someone used from Capcon side invented reality bending machine or found a reality altering stone?

To continue from my previous post, while the older games didn’t have a strong story, the teams actually made sense.

From X-Men Vs Street Fighter:

Outside of the one weird team-up, most of them made sense. I liked the emphasis in similarity (whether through personality or abilities) for the teams.

Marvel Super Heroes Vs Street Fighter was generally more loose on this concept compared to its predecessor. There were pairings you’d see where it could be Ryu/Cap or Ryu/Cyclops, Bison/Omega Red, Shuma Gorath/Dhalsim or Shuma Gorath/Dan, Zangief/Hulk, Blackheart/Akuma, Chun-Li/Spider-Man, and some other combinations. There was some consistency at times, but pretty random. MVC1 did away with this altogether.

When it comes to Infinite, I can already see an X/Iron Man team based on the trailer. We’ll have a better feel for potential team-ups when more of the roster is revealed.

Interestingly, the iconic frame of Ryu and Captain Marvel charging at each other is very similar to Ryu vs Nova in the UMvC3 intro. One early direction I can see them going is 3 characters from each side winding up with the Infinity Stones, with the Avengers taking it upon themselves to deal with the situation.
