Disney don’ goofed but it isn’t clear that they could’ve done it right. People point to the MCU, but the MCU is just doing adaptations of material people already know. Regular fans know where they are going, characters don’t stray too much from where they’ve been, etc. MCU is literally “we want more of the same”. Which is fine, I love MCU movies because they are just a fun popcorn eating good time.

I think that’s the biggest thing to remember about Star Wars. Sure the EU is a thing, but that was all “canon” at one time. I think Disney made the right move ultimately. At least they can pick and choose what will work for them.

EU was canon is questionable at best. because how George set it up it can be made non-canon at any time, and he had various levels of canon.
With anything on the higher levels can contradict older lower level stuff and that work was automatically made non canon
