Star Wars

Nothing Mary Sue about Rey.

She’s a strong independent woman who can instantly learn and be better at everything, even if the comparison is someone who has been doing it their entire life.

Everyone loves her too. Because she’s so strong and good at everything.

Shes no more Mary Sue then Luke was, people just like to bitch about it cuz she’s a girl.

The prequels added a ton of iconic characters and lore to the series despite their flaws.

And without the prequels, you wouldn’t have the Clone Wars series (IMO probably the best thing ever produced under the Star Wars IP) and Rebels.

Sometimes I’ve had the the urge to watch the Prequels. I’ve never had the urge to watch TFA again after seeing it once in theater.

I have hope that as the story expands in the new trilogy TFA will come together and find a good place in the story. But as it is now…I’m just not feeling it.

Episode 7 despite the flaws will be more memorable than the prequel trilogy as is as time goes on.

I remember going to see episode one when it came out in theaters. Even as a kid I was like “What the fuck was that shit???”

I had teary eyes of joy the entirety of watching TFA for the first time. Because it actually felt like a star wars movie unlike the prequels. The prequels felt like they were in a world of their own, different from the og trilogy.

Even tough the prequels had their own “feel”, which upon later viewing, you come to appreciate, me too, as a kid, I walked out of episode 1 with the biggest confused look ever! And that movie was AIMED at my age group! All I could think was: " WTF was that shit???"

By episode 3, every action taken in the movie would raise 2 to 3 questions out of me.

When your father is Darth “choke a bitch” Vader, shit is supposed to come by easier.

Rey has no (as of yet) connections to justify her being amazing at everything and being able to defeat Kylo Ren, who was trained by friggin’ Luke…

Luke’s connection to Vader we didn’t know, and honestly didn’t even exist until Empire. You can’t give Luke a pass for a connection he got in the second movie of his trilogy and then shit on Rey who only has one.

And even if she DOES get the connection, everyone is just gonna shit on her anyway because it’d be the same shit as Luke. So it’s No Win Scenario at this point short of killing her off in the first five minutes.

We didn’t know who his father was in New Hope, but we did know he was a Jedi and an ace pilot.

We know nothing of Rey’s family, but everyone keeps telling us she’s special and she can do anything the plot requires of her.

This isn’t me being a misogynist, either. Plenty of other fictional females are great at lots of things but still manage to have a personality, like Kim Possible, Lara Croft, or Samus Aran.

Rey deserves better writing.

The thing is that people are vastly overstating what Rey actually accomplished in TFA.

“She flew the Millennium Falcon with no training!”

  • She actually underwent simulation training, which is arguably more than Luke did to learn how to handle an X-Wing for a Death Star Trench Run.

“She fought off Kylo Ren, he was trained by Luke!”

  • Kylo is honestly closer to a Padawan who happens to have strong Force abilities and on top of that, he was heavily damaged by the Bowcaster AND tired out from having to deal with Finn literally 30 seconds earlier.

The only real Mary Sue shit she did was flip the Force Mind Trick shit on Kylo but I once again attribute that to him being an idiot.

It’ll be in TLJ where we see how far they’re willing to push her.

She practically crashed the Falcon multiple times during that scene to. It’s not even like it’s that complicated a ship either, it’s just a freighter.

Also Luke suffered from physiological blocks when it came to using the Force

The whole Luke : “I can’t believe it thing” Yoda “that’s why you failed” thing.
Luke didn’t believe he could do half the things he should have in the force.

Honestly if Finn wasn’t there, she’d have been

A) Captured (happened anyway when she went wandering around the woods…)

B ) Crashed the Falcon in the first place. Finn was making corrections and fighting off the pursuers.

C) Been dead from planet exploding to where she got taken to. Finn led the rescue party.

D) Have died to Kylo Ren. Finn tired him out just by surviving and having Kylo Ren slowly bleed out from a Bowcaster that was literally catapulting niggas 30 feet into the air.

Honestly if they tried to make her a Mary Sue they failed (because they made her too bland), because every single person I talked to afterwards was more interested in a Finn and Poe having adventures movie than anything involving Rey. And this is me halfway liking the character and I can see what they were going for. As it is, she can’t stand on her own, and her best interactions were with Finn and even then you learn you realize just how lacking in character traits/faults she is when put next to Finn.

If you want to go a step farther, this is Han and Luke all over again with Han being the much more interesting character of the two and who you want to see the most of and that you really wouldn’t mind a Han and Chewie movie doing wacky shit.

I still think everyone calling her a mary sue is jumping the gun. Wait out the whole trilogy first.

I was making the argument that she wasn’t, because the movie made it pretty clear she had no idea what she was doing but was making a lot of plausible leaps with trial and error (mostly error).

The only really clear part of the movie was that

A.) Finn either had a great damn actor, or he had the best writing in the movie. Probably both.

B.) Poe somehow managed to steal the show with 15 minutes worth of screentime.

C.) You could hear slash fanfiction of the two being written before the movie was even over with. Despite Finn attempting to get into Rey’s pants since the second he saw her.

Sidenote: You can’t put a guy in the friendzone while he’s unconscious after taking a lightsaber to the chest and flying halfway across the galaxy to provide you with backup. What the fuck Rey?

Whacky what ifs, but what it Darth Vader is Rey’s father!!!

How? After Luke and Leia, Vader pretry much lost his fuck. Most of his worst burns are below the waist. Unless some one got a sample of his DNA I don’t see that happening

Just randomly came up with this… but could she be genetically engineered from someone like Luke or Vader’s DNA?

Good reason to bring back midiclorians LUL!

Guess we’ll have to wait and find out.

Perhaps, but Luke is setup as exceptional much better than Rey is. Obi-Wan references Luke’s ability as a pretty good pilot, and the 2 meter wamp rat shot in comparison to the Death Star exhaust port show his competency during the Death Star battle. That was also Luke’s only real ability showcased in that movie. Rey has a pretty good handle on most things thrown her way.
