Every comedian, and I mean every fucking comedian, has bombed on stage. Shit even the great ones have stunk up joints. Here’s how amazingly bad it can be:
About the subject being to niche.
It is a double edge sword, if you mange to break down the subject to its simple elements so that the crowd can relate to it, then go for it. Otherwise the crowd would have a hard time understanding the jokes.
And easy way to bring the subject is finding how the nichier theme relates to a more relatable them.
For example, i work on IT related stuff, so i have IT material as on the IT pov, i start with work place jokes and bring the subject to them
If the public doesn’t really feel it i can easily change the subject to the workplace material. Something that has worked to me for example is mix both of them and go in zig zag with both themes.
Edit
Dark material works the best when you have established your comedy act and character in a way that they can expect it. Otherwise it can feel out of place and awkward for them.
I like how he stablishes his comedy act on the 1st minutes so the public knows that he will bring this kind of comedy yet they will still be able to relate to it.
lol that was one of the issues I had. I have some interesting stories from work, but most of my work has been IT work, and I’m pretty much looking at performing in front of blue collar workers, and college dude bro’s, so I have to be careful how to discuss that. I really wanna work on a joke about the dude I had to help fix a computer, and he had only one fucking finger, from a squirrel hunting accident.
Most people who know me know my humour tends to be somewhat dark. Case in point, the joke I made the other day about Mattriarch slitting her wrists. I’m usually the ‘too soon’ guy or ‘goes over the line’ guy a lot. My issue, like you said, is establishing to people that I have that side. I don’t wanna go out on stage and just blurt out rape and incest and shit jokes for 5 minutes then sit down on wonder why everybody has a shocked look on their face, but I don’t wanna go be squeaky clean either. I’ve lost a lot of jobs due to making jokes I thought were hilarious, but apparently other people found offensive (got fired from Walmart for saying we should take two midgets who worked for us, hook em up, because then we would get puppies…which wasn’t even a good joke lol).
I’m kinda leaning towards wanting to be an angry, sarcastic, comic.
