Standard vs. Widescreen Differences

That’s the thing. Who WANTS to play in 4:3?. Think about it…if you’re playing in 4:3 it’s because you don’t have a widescreen and you can’t because the image will be stretched. If you had a widescreen you would play with the better display, you wouldn’t choose 4:3. The fact that it changes the game changes the argument from aspect ratio to whether or not people should be getting hit with wallbounce combos from so far away?!

Basically.

4:3 No “easy” wall bounce combos.

16:9 Yes to “easy” wall bounce combos.

I vote 16:9 just on the assumption that most developers test their games on 480P widescreens…

this whole thing is so retarded lol
its like they are actually fighting in my tv!
or some shit…

After watching this I think any arguement for 16:9 ratio play is void: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=7H3suM1OO3E&feature=channel_page

You can clearly see that Polymer’s wall bounce combo’s require him to dash up otherwise in 16:9 the screen doesnt pan out from a wall bounce move hence wouldnt need to dash up. The combo from 3.01 clearly shows this as well as the fact that the screen panned out.

The 16:9 ratio issue seems like its exclusive to the Wii version.

what was used at frosty faustings?

16:9 was used, on a 4:3 screen.

This effects Daimao’s ability to combo after HCB+B a lot too.

not to start a flamewar kind of argument but shouldn’t the game be played the way it was meant to be played, on a 4:3 ratio.

Could you elaborate on this? Do you have any specific examples?

EDIT: While I’m at it:

How did that turn out? Were there any technical problems setting up, and do you think it caused any problems for the players?

Can anyone confirm this?

It seems to me all they did to 16:9 was chopped some off the top of the 4:3 screen and zoomed in a little to make it fit, keeping the walls the same. As when I look at 4:3 mode, the characters look smaller; that’s it. It’s like they’re smaller, so you don’t have enough reach for your combo extentions. I honestly don’t know how they made it different to the arcade if they’re both (16:9 arcade and 4:3 arcade) true to each other…

I’m pretty sure that combo is the same in the wii version regardless of aspect ratio:

And ugh…who’s to say that this game was meant to be played in 4:3 aspect ratio? Just because all previous Capcom games were usually 4:3? I mean come to think of it, the last vs. game was still in the 4:3 era…it’s 2009 dude. Give me a break…

16:9 ftw

Okay. Is it just me or he is just blatantly saying that “New > Old.”

I hope not, because saying that “New > Old” in my opinion is just kinda stupid.

The simpliest solution is for someone who lives in Japan / has access to the arcade version do Ryu’s donky kick midscreen and see if he can continue his combo without moving an inch. If I was a betting man I would put money on that he cant.

do 16:9, so combos as long

edit: ^^^^^wtf did i just say??

…it’s just you

When it comes to new technologies ESPECIALLY pertaining to the aspect ratio in which you’re viewing a video game that would be a yes, new is definitely better than old in this case. When it comes to 16:9 over 4:3…yes 16:9 is better factually better. It shows more (in the correct cases) and it is standard for the latest TV’s and monitors. You obviously missed my point when I posted before. Honestly I’m confused as to why I have to go so in depth to convey this to you, you obviously have reading comprehension problems if you think I was “blatantly saying new>old” . Also *you *must be “kinda stupid” by trying to downgrade my statement to make it seem like I was generalizing when I made my previous post… I’m clearly referring to the 16:9 vs. 4:3 argument when I stated that it was 2009 and we should be using the superior aspect ratio.

Just my .02 cents. If you don’t like my opinion then don’t try to bash me and fail… If you were smarter you would have made an argument against it instead of trying to call me stupid.

well, we need to see whats poppin in japan, and see what theyre working with.

we need to see if evo is going to have this game, and then communicate with the staff as to what standard they will use

if evo is not going to have the game, then we need to make a poll thread in fgd, or here, and see what the people want.

until then, uh, i guess go with what one of the first tournaments was already run on, so stick with 16:9

i started playing this game in 16:9 first, so i just assumed that ryu had to dash to get the B f+C after wall bounce. i’ve just dashed in every time so i’ve never really noticed the transition between screen resolutions, which i’ve done a lot

it is pretty stupid that there are differences, though

Okay. I didn’t call you kinda stupid or stupid at all.

I SAID.

Meaning that if you say that “New > Old” in a general fashion, that would be kind of stupid. And I also said,

Meaning, I was wondering if that was your statement was saying, which I was wrong on. So…

No. I wasnt generalizing your statement, I was asking if it you meant it in a generalized fashion, because I wanted to make sure before I said anything further. As long as you’re not saying that “New > Old”, then there isnt an issue.

On a technical level, yes 16:9 is better than 4:3. My only argument against it is that 16:9 doesnt display properly on all TVs. Some TVs cut of borders, and others just make it look squished. Where as 16:9 TVs can display both properly without any visual issues.

So after reading all of this, I decided to try it out.

Now I don’t know if anyone else has this problem, but it doesn’t matter which aspect ratio I chose on the Wii system menu, I could not for the life of me connect the…

:snkb:, :r::snkc:

…part of the combo.

It’s as if my 16:9 was in 4:3 wall bounce mode. Tried both aspects but still got the same problem. :frowning:

Recent match I found on NicoNico. The Ryu combo @ 1.38 onwards clearly shows that Ryu has to dash forward after a wall bounce.

It seems as though the tournament organizer will be responsible for deciding the aspect ratio standard used in that tourney. Can’t really leave it up to the community for determining a standard since there are arguments for and against both, it will basically go on forever. Just make sure you know what ratio they’re using and practice in that aspect ratio before the tournament.

This thread should be closed and stickied for reference though. I think it’s extremely important for newcomers to know.
