Guile never fails for he is a true American.
It’s true. Guile is the very embodiment of all that is American…to the Japanese. When they think of Americans, they . Probably a carryover from their post WW2 rebuilding/occupation days.
Not at all… 3s isn’t even my favorite fighter or anything. I used to be a total marvelhead actually, back when I could get consistent people to play at a similar skill level, I used to be pretty decent with lower tiers and actually get some wins or at least have such a close match that I had fun. I’d be pretty consistent on my lame little tricks (and yeah, I love Morrigan in marvel.) and had fun playing the game and trying to land them. I’m adamantly (personally) against top tier characters in games not based on tier really, but just because of how many people pick them just because of their many options and well-rounded awesomeness. I’m all for picking characters you actually personally like the most. shrug You know, not just who’s good. I mean I understand liking top tier characters but you know what I mean.
So, I get raped in Marvel because I won’t succumb to playing lame-o Cable because my execution in Marvel is sloppy. And since Marvel is so popular in Seattle, everyone is very practiced and the rotations are relatively large. When I just get stomped on one game, I don’t get any chance to improve… and I have to wait too long to play again to remember my mistakes and learn from them. If that makes sense. If my stick worked for DC, or if I had a convertor, or if I had marvel on ps2, I’d get more in practice and probably enjoy playing it more. Trying to get my hands on a fatty ps2 fliptop (got my swapdiscs but not the case yet >_<) so I can work on my marvel. All the sticks open for Marvel are Happs and all I play personally is Sanwa so that makes me even worse.
As for ST, I just have issues with the game mechanics, I guess. I like the game, and I enjoy it, but only in certain relatively small doses. For my tastes everything goes by too fast (not as in game speed, but like how much damage everything does/how quick matches are over), and ST’s blockstun system doesn’t tickle my fancy. I can’t really put my finger on it, I guess something about how you look like you’re in blockstun forever but you’re not really because you just got thrown. Tick throws are so god tier… Also, another problem is how popular characters with fireballs are, and how I like characters like Fei Long who inherently lose to those characters. I mean, I could win but when the other player is more skilled AND has such an anti-my-character option, it’s just frustrating and not too enjoyable. The game is fun and great, and it survives the test of time unlike anything else, but it’s flaws bug me more than other games flaws, I guess. The game is so match-up oriented that again, with larger rotations I don’t really gain much. Last time at Zach’s I’d hang around for the ST rotations of like 3 to 4 and I could see myself improving with every single match… then more people would find the rotation, or the opposite, and me getting stomped by a largely better player doesn’t give me much room to learn which normals to use against what and all that jazz.
Like, the guilty gear series, I realize, is one of my favorite fighters because there’s so many options. Especially defensively. Pet peeve of mine would be losing to a meaty lp fireball trap into a hp fireball by Ryu or something. Just like… wtf you can’t do anything. It kills my morale I guess. I don’t like that. In GG you can faultless defense, burst, dead angle attack, use invincibility frames of a move to get through something and then roman cancel it for safety/comboability… Not to use these as ways of saying it’s better because games like GG and ST aren’t comparable IMO, but they just tailor to my tastes more. Does that make sense? Might as well write out enough explanation to cover for all my whining, right? lol
I used to think Tick throws were broken until a few months ago when Julien Beaseley sat down and taught Keith and me how to counter-throw by repeatedly walking up and ticking us with Ryu. If we failed we got thrown, if we succeeded we threw the Ryu who was aiming to cheese us. I actually go for throws a lot LESS than I did before, because I know it’s possible to counter-throw me if I tick, but if I rarely throw but am always ready for counter-throwing, I have a higher chance of throwing you than you throwing me.
The exception would be against Bison and Vega, who seem a LOT harder to counter throw for some reason…anyways, I really enjoy the throw game of ST now that I understand it a lot better. Because (correct me if I’m wrong), it all comes down to timing and the defender is almost, or even possibly just as likely to throw as the ticker? I’m not 100% sure.
I’ll bring it to show you the icy hot stunna condition. I might sell it…Have you owned it before or just played the ISO like me? I had the real one on TG-16 before but I couldn’t read Japanese, still can only read some basic words in kana and a few kanji here and there (watashi etc)
That’s hot! (I’m not joking either).
The defender in a tick throw almost always has the advantage
the exception is if they are outside your throw range
but nah, I’ve never actually owned Snatcher
bring it next time so I can ogle at it
I could believe that, but why is this?
Reversal frame. If both characters input a throw on the second frame after hit stun ends, it’s basically 50/50 who gets thrown. But on the first frame after hit stun ends, the defending character is immune to throws, while the ticking character can be thrown. For that reason, so long as both characters are within each other’s throw range, the character being ticked always has the advantage.
And while throw ranges do vary between characters, it’s seldom a factor. When you’re being ticked in most situations by anyone other than Dhalsim, both characters will be close enough to throw each other.
Also, I found Airthrow’s comment above a little suspect–if he’s talking about Dictator and Claw. Claw’s throw range is nothing to write home about. Dhalsim, dictator, and boxer’s non-command throws are all superior. As far as ST is concerned, only Cammy has worse throw range than Claw. Perhaps it’s just a lack of familiarity with the mix-ups that throw you off. No pun intended.
Besides, you train against Nate. Shouldn’t you fear the SPD tick far more than Claw or dictator? The SPD tick would automatically grab you on the second frame after hit stun, since Geif doesn’t have to worry about inputting it on the right frame. But then, you see the SPD animation coming, so you know to go for an invincible reversal move.
I haven’t “trained” with Nate in months like we used to. Which is mostly my fault since I have been pretty anti-social for the past month or so. I wish I did because I always improved a lot. But I dunno either, Nate hasn’t been taking the game as seriously as he used to maybe? Which definitely hurts my motivation for the game.
And I didn’t really mean Vega was better at throwing than boxer, it just seems I get thrown by Dic and Vega wayyyy more than any other character. Quite possibly it’s just walking speed+awkward normals that lead me to not timing my counter-throws right, I wasn’t trying to make a definitive statement about the game since we all know my understanding of the game is remedial at best (spritesizecough)
Well, if my cheese throws are getting to you, learn to recognize my setups. I seldom tick on the ground. It’s always the jump-in situations where I am tempted to throw. Unless I’m up against Dhalsim or Dee Jay, I’ll usually jump in with a fierce. If the attack comes late, or if I’m up against a character with a slide, I’ll use the jump in roundhouse.
From there, it’s either an immediate throw, or a slight mix-up. If I don’t throw when I land, I’ll do one of the following before leading into a throw: st. short, st. forward, cr. forward, or cr. strong. The cr. strong into a throw is rare, as the recovery is longer. Alternately, I could use one of the two following combos after landing. Either one links from jumping fierce.
st. fierce -> cr. strong
cr. forward -> cr. strong
I guess what the above illustrates are my possible chains. If I don’t throw immediately after landing, if you don’t see a st. fierce or cr. forward, always attempt to counter throw. Or, at least attempt something. Because I won’t be able to link anything behind it OTHER than a throw.
I suppose zass put it best when he was showing me Throw Li’s cr. forward -> cr. roundhouse. He said that the cr. forward -> throw is “only deadly if the opponent knows that I can link a roundhouse instead of a throw.” Which is why I never feared his combos on CCC2, because he couldn’t link in that version. During game 1 against him in the GF on 9/7, I reversal AA’ed in between Dictator’s cr. forward and scissors. I never would have attempted that against Julien on his cab.
So knowing your options really means knowing your opponent’s options. Now that you know all my tricks, you should own me next time we play. Unless I take Josh’s recommendation and incorporate st./cr. forward -> throw as a part of my game. He said that he saw many Japanese players doing that at Evo. But I’m not Japanese, thus I don’t ground tick. I’m American, so I play Marvel.
That was quite epic. Thank you for the explanation! =]
Regarding the ST throwdown, consider me in for Thursday night. I’ll call if I’m not going to attend. Since Alex is busting out SAGAT, EMPEROR OF MUAY THAI, I will be practicing my secondaries. Yes niggas, PLURAL! But don’t get confused, Chun isn’t scared of Sagat.
That’s what’s up!
Nate is just being Nate…an abhorrent douchenozzle
You should come so I can let you borrow Art of Fighting Collection and we can test out Fatal Fury Collection. I pretty much own you in Fatal Fury Special.
uh i have no PS2…im kinda fucked…
Alex should make a note to bring his converter and multiple sticks wired up for that configuration. Anyone else with DC sticks or adapters should bring those as well. Otherwise, the rotation could get really long.
earlier?
I’m staying home today, so are people interested in coming by earlier than 8:30? I’m getting over a cold so starting and ending earlier works better for me.
Nigga stop trippin. I have an innovation adapter and will bring it, but I will shoot anyone that takes it, shit is serious. That is why I just ordered two EMS adapters.
Sir Julius Beastly,
I may show up early, but I need to see how much slacking needs to be done here at the office.
Put your NAME on your adapters. Sharpie is your friend.
Hey guys, I think I have the flu or something equally fucked up, so I will be resting home tonight, which sucks because I need practice in the worst way, plus I was looking forward to hanging out.
I’ll be there at Preppy’s tommorow though, no matter what…so what’s up Pablo?!?!
I don’t think I’m going to be able to make it either
I might though, we’ll see
What, you want to load up on the silver bullets? I will have to see, I was planning on just gaming, but I may bring a few. I don’t really want to get wasted. Yes, I really did just say that.
