Everyone plays better with a chip on their shoulders. Believe what you want. Claim what you will.
Truth is, neither of you are the least appreciated ST player in Seattle. You guys are ranked. Everyone knows who you are because you post and complain all the time. Every community will have their mix of mid-level players, where Mandel and Julian currently reside with respect to ST–by my estimation. Two factors generally determine whether a competitive community thrives or remains stagnant are as follows:
The first are the high level players, do they actively promote the game and teach new things to those who want to learn? Or do they periodically show up just to take everyone’s money? Worse yet, do they alienate themselves from the community by conducting themselves with an air of superiority? I have seen many groups of players lose interest in games simply because the best player in the area was a dick.
The aforementioned was the cause of the DFW gaming scene’s demise. No one there gets along these days. Everyone talks shit behind everyone else’s back. Everyone hates on existing competitive games. The all jump on whatever new game comes out, but once the tiers are established [and the same players are at the top], they all call it a bullshit and worthless game. All because no one there likes the high level players. The high level players are generally cool with each other, but stick to their respective games. They rarely wish to encroach on each other’s properties.
The second, and most important factor, are the low level players. A gaming community is dependent on the low level players. In collectible gaming, these are the people that buy the majority of the product and make the game profitable for manufacturers. In all competitive gaming, these are the people that add variety to the tournament scene. These are the people who make the tournament pot bigger, though they know they probably have no chance of winning. These are the people who aspire to become better; who invest in our competitive culture. In short, these are the people who play the game because they actually love the game. In doing so, they remind us of all of the reasons that we started playing competitively in the first place.
A group of players can get bigger and better together without a definitive high level player. But a collective of players cannot advance or sustain without their low level players. These are the guys that you practice combos on during casuals. They are the first round opponents that get sent to the loser’s bracket early. They are the people that every so often show you something new that you never knew was possible. And when a low level player pushes himself to become a mid or high level player (or goes to another area and wrecks everybody), you feel proud that you were a part of that person’s tutelage.
So the least appreciated Seattle ST player at present can only be David Alvarez.
I should also add something more about Nate that I failed to do in my previous post. That man has crushed me in all 3 matches we’ve had. He has single handedly stopped my advancement in every single ST tournament (both of them) that I’ve attended. Call him XTBeast.
Shit, and I thought my days of the epic post were behind me.
